avi editors....
 

I know this is more of a software query but thought i'd try here because i want to be able to D/L from a site... I've already tried one avi editor by fadetoblack on their trial period but didn't really have the time to evaluate it properly before it was rendered useless.
What i'm looking for is a downloadable program, with a little sophistication but not too complicated that it really needs a manual, i'm more of a learn by using sort of person, i can just about use Dreamweaver without using a manual so you have an idea... if it's free software excellent! if it isn't.... it's not a great problem.

Had anyone tried one that they've found really worth the time and trouble? Any suggestions are welcome... providing they're about the avi editor ;)
Will need to find one before the end of next week.. and failing that will have to opt for the fadetoblack software.

[EDIT] Just checked it again and found out why i whizzed by it the first time.... I don't have Windows XP on this machine... only on the laptop.... this pc is a Win98 baby :p

Well, the program we teach the students at work is Adobe Premiere, but that is a bit wierd to learn, and is expensive.

Found what looks like a good Freeware Video Editor, Zwei-Stein Video Editor. It's at http://www.thugsatbay.com/software/index.html.

Might take a bit of learning as well, but seems to have a good range of features.. And it's free.

Thanks El Diablo. Didn't notice the full stop until it was too late to edit the post..

The two main video editors to try are vdub which is free and tmpgenc which is used for conversion to vcd/svcd for playing the files via a dvd player on your TV. Free versions are available for this too.

Visit http://www.doom9.org for downloads and many useful guides as to their use and also access to the main codecs you will need as well.

So far.... thank you for your suggestions.... very useful.... however i was hoping for a d/l that someone had already tried and was happy with.
I'm having a look at the ones already added here and thanks heaps for that.... am testing a couple as i write.... well inbetween ;)
If someone had tried one or has second hand knowledge of it's worth, please let me know.

the only one I've ever tried was Ulead Video Studio, version 5 at the time. It was quite easy to use & produced good results. Latest version is 7 - but it costs $90!!!

There is a 30 day "free trial" download available at

Wow 70 mgs :( My pc is already having a bit of a memory problem... VM completely overloaded and the rest of it is struggling :eek:

But a 30 day trial is always good.. will try that one when the two i'm testing now have either killed my pc totally or have ruined the avi's i've already got :p
