BBC vetting old sitcoms

Political correctness?

CLASSIC BBC sitcoms are being vetted for racism after viewers complained about offensive language in repeats

I can sort of see their reasoning but at the same time where does it all end?....what next.....are we going to have to put fig leaves over classical nudes to avoid offending people?

Who has decided that we are all really sensitive nowadays and need "offensive" material from the past...censored?

To remove a reference to a "Paki" shop in Only Fools and Horses from years ago is bonkers (anyone offended by me using that word will find a box of tissues at the end of the post). That is what they were called in those times. A shop that was run by a Pakistani was called a Paki shop. Big deal. That's what is was. I have heard Pakistani call each other "Pakis" many a time, for goodness sake.

If you ran a corner shop in Cardiff, would you be offended by the term Welshie shop?

This whole thing has really upset and offended me ...

Boo hoo......boo hoooooo

Well, I don't think they are doing too much damage, but I'd rather see the time and effort used on sky1 adverts

Hmmmmmm, I see their point when it comes to just getting a cheap gag..........BUT......if it reflects the way things were then you cant exactly remove history can you?
I think each use of the language has got to be considered on its own merits......if you see what i mean.

One of my favourite programs is "It aint half hot mum" Cringeability factor 10......They would have to wipe out the whole series :(

It would seem that some people are (really sensitive), as the censoring is taking place in response to viewers' complaints. That does not mean it is not completely ridiculous of course. Rather than removing phrases because their meaning/offensiveness has changed over the years, we should take these shows for what they are: a product of the time in which they were made.

Edit: I see aliferste has just made a similar point...

Completely agree.

I do not understand some people, There was a complaint upheld last week about a radio presenter who let slip the f word on air a while ago. He apologized immediately about the slip, but 1 person still complained. Why do some people complain about something like that???
The issue at hand is wrong in my view because the programs are already in 'the public domain' and to alter them would be to interfere with history as pointed out previously.

Err, I don't know if you're aware, but this *has* happened in the past!

Many classical paintings had fig leaves added after they were finished and it's alleged that the Vatican has a basement storeroom *full* of stone genitalia that have been removed from statues and replaced by carved fig leaves.

Ouch!! :Yikes:
