I am a Newb at this so please be gentlle ;) . I brought a Linksys router BEFSR41 I have connected it all up set it up as the manual says copied the floppy to the second pc. I can get the internet to work on both pc,s but i can't get file and print sharing to work. I have ticked file and print sharing on them, and set up certain folders to share with each other.
Both pc,s are running XP pro but i cannot get them to see each other.
Can anybody help me please.

Re: File and Print Sharing

Are you able to ping one from the other?

how about going on PC1 and doing the following

Click on start, then run and type:

\\pc2\sharename

Then click on OK
(not wanting to teach you to suck eggs, but for pc2 put the name of your other pc and for sharename put the name of a share on pc2)

Re: File and Print Sharing

do you have any firewall software running on either of these pcs? it may be blocking the conneciton, and if so you need to configure it to allow local addresses to share folders... if this is the problem and you need help configuring the firewall, post back which firewall it is and we will help with that ;)

Ooo good point, I've got a feeling that one of the recent patches turns on the windows firewall, so check the settings on your network connection.

Re: File and Print Sharing

If you are using a software firewall then you usually have to add the 2nd PC to your trusted (local) zone (this will usually be the local IP of 192.168.1.101). You can also usually set what is allowed in the trusted local zone seperately from the internet zone.
Similarly, on the software firewall on the other PC you will have to do the same to allow the main PC access in its trusted (local) zone (usually an IP of 192.168.1.100 for the 1st PC).

Check to see if your PCs are communicating with each other in any other way. For example can you succesfully play networked QuakeIII etc between them? Try a shareware messenger program which is protocol independent i.e. does not rely on TCP/IP or any other specific protocol just to see if they are talking in any way.

Are you using a workgroup? If so, make sure that both PC's have the same workgroup name specified. In XP, go into Control Panel -> System Properties and look under the "Computer Name" tab. To change the workgroup name, click the Change button.

Re: File and Print Sharing

Don't you have to enable netbios (?sp) on the firewall to allow printer sharing?
