Leaving NTL getting ADSL, what equipment's needed
OK so i'm finally able to sign up for an ADSL ISP.:D
my question is what equipment will i need? I have 1 PC soon to be 2 also 2 Xboxes in the house. I would like all to access the ADSL connection. I'm not that technical but ok to set a small network i think, i've been looking on ebuyer but don't know if i need a router, hub, modem or whatever.:dunce: People on here have always been helpfull in the past and i thought it better to ask those who know before buying the wrong items.:) thanks for any help you can give. |
Re: Leaving NTL getting ADSL, what equipment's needed
Get a 4 or 8 port all-in-one DSL firewall router with built in modem.
Alternatively, just get a basic DSL modem router and use an 8 port hub. |
Re: Leaving NTL getting ADSL, what equipment's needed
As Richard said, if you are staying with ADSL and probably not going back to NTL then buy a combined DSL router and modem. If you might go back then you could get a seperate router and a DSL modem. this would allow you to use the router on cable, if you ever went back.

Thanks Richard,
Any ideas as to personal prefences (linksys, netgear), bearing in mind i dont have a fortune to spend. Will I also need a filter thing that i've seen advertised or would this come with the router? Sorry to seem dumb but been lazy really with p & p NTL modem. |

Re: Leaving NTL getting ADSL, what equipment's needed
You will need what is called a splitter for each phone on the line + the modem. Some ISPs provide them. I went with Pipex and got a USB ADSL modem and 2 splitters for free. I have the modem sat to one side in case the DLINK modem I have goes down.
