My village Mentioned in Dispatches

At 9pm on Channel 4 in Dispatches:Keep them Out.

By the way I'm not one of those who were up in arms about an asylum seekers centre at HMS Deadalus in Lee-on-the-Solent so I'm going to enjoy this poke at my less than charitable and deranged, rabid, mouthfoaming friends and neighbours.Mind they did come from as far away as Portsmouth,Fareham,Gosport and Stubbington to protest.Oh and our useless MP actually turned up for every photo opportunity.

So,no,don't look for me at the protest. My other half was there, because he was too embarrassed to say no to his best 'friend'.

Incog. :)

It's all a bit of a non starter anyway as Daedalus isn't going to be used.

Even so the programme was an eye opener.I was rather annoyed at the aggressive stance taken by the anti asylum seekers group. It made me ashamed of being a Lee resident and I've never seen anything like it in the 40 years I've lived here.I've always been proud of the very welcoming attitude of the community but this has made me wonder just how insular we really are.

Its a shame too that people still think its just Sun readers who are P'd off with it all.

I've spoken to a couple of people from LotS Incog, the feeling I got was that the residents were not anti asylum seekers per se, just anti 400 single young males being housed there.....would you agree? :)

No a lot of the comments I've heard and a lot of the people on the show had some very racist opinions. However I think that it mostly had something to do with the so called threat to house prices(the houses around Deadalus are some of the most expensive in the village) and a few folk exploiting some with irrational fears.I just hated the way that anyone who hada differinf opinion was shouted down. Not what I expected at all.

As for the joke about The Sun I'm not withdrawing it.I find it a very racist paper in many ways and it has no subtlety what so ever and panders to the lowest common factor.

Today's Portsmouth News had the headline "STITCH UP" in very large letters.

A lot of people from Lee on the Solent were *VERY* annoyed with Dispatches, saying that they gave much too much coverage to a few people with racist/ bigotted viewpoints and left most of the more moderate comments on the cutting room floor.

Unfortunately (having had the opportunity to take them to task on C4's Right to Reply programme a few years back) Dispatches seems to be aimed at producing "sensationalist" programmes, rather than actually a balanced viewpoint of the issues :(

Good point. Programs like that do tend to give a platform to the loudest voices - not necessarily the most common view.

Oh yes the Portsmouth News.I don't particularly have a high opinion of that paper either. Not since they published a frontpage article sometime back around '84 about a peadophile ring being uncovered in the city.In this article they managed somehow to make fellow friends and teaching collegues appear to be part of the ring, when in actual fact they had been one of the ways that the ring was smashed in the first place,by having to view 'videos' belonging to the ring(to recognise children at risk). These teachers then had to help in the aftercare of the abused children of the ring. The paper did print a retraction which as usual was inside the paper, not on the front like the original story.

But I digress.Yes Dispatches did go too far overboard but they did I hope make everyone possibly rethink their attitudes. Some of these people are friends and neighbours who when I did try to point out that they could be viewed as being racist just dismissed my opinions at the time. Some were not so polite although none were quite as vigerous as shown in the programme.

It's funny how over the years I've had such discussions with many people whom I respect and yet everyone of them has always begun such discussions with the phrase I'm not racist but........

Anyway it's over and done with now and the whole idea came to nothing, which I thought was likely to happen anyway as Deadalus would have had too much spent on it to make it a worthwhile endeavour.Cost was always going to be the underlying factor in any choice.

Incog. :)
