Hmmmmm, my 1st guess would be is Windows it using DMA access for the new drive?

What version of Windows you using?
In XP, goto Device Manager, look for IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers.
Within there you should see Primary & Secondary IDE Channels.
In the properties of each, goto Advanced Settings tab, and make sure the "Transfer Mode" is set to "DMA if available"

You may also have to check your BIOS for DMA settings to.

Also make sure (if it's winamp) it's using the right output, i.e. directsound etc.

Is the hard drive the same speed as your last one? Did you change any settings when you removed the old one? Is it the drive you use for you temp cache at all?
