STB rebooting

Help me!! NTL engineer has given up on my problem.

I have Pace box Di4000 (i think thats the model). Four months ago my STB started rebooting randomly while surfing the net or watching TV. It started out at once every few days and sometimes twice a day. TV blanks and the box shows the 'nlt' message as it does reboot.

After complaining repeatedly to ntl who said they checked the box remotely it had not rebooted, I finally got them to send engineer. He checked the engineer menus and stated no errors or issues with signals, etc but did offer to swap the box anyway. He gave me a NEW, from pace - all still wrapped in plastic, box and checked it all.

Fine for a few days then bingo! It reboots. Right in the middle of a paid movie so I have to miss 5 minutes waiting for interactive to load so I could switch back to front row!!!! Rang ntl they send the same engineer and he checks the logs and says he cannot see anything wrong. All he could offer to do is give me a mobile number and say call the moment it happens so he can diag the box. Easily said as I only at home when not at work, and I don't want to be ring engineers out of hours.

Has anybody else had this problem, and hopefully had it solved? Do any techies know what might cause it to happen?

Do you have bb through the stb or via a seperate sacm? this can cause issues at higher speeds?

I wonder whether this is a heat-related fault. How much ventilation space is there around your STB, and is it sat on any other electrical equipment?

Any indications that this happens when your not watching TV?
It might be worthwhile trying to work out if there is anything in the house that switches on at the same time as the STB reboots i.e. fridge or freezer pump starting up, washing machine starting a spin cycle, another biggy is the central heating pump kicking in, its not unknown for that sort of thing to cause a surge in the mains that can fool the STB into thinking theres a loss of mains which makes them reboot.

Another possibility is a heat build up, is there an adequate airflow around the box?

Re: STB rebooting

thanks for the replies.

after reading them i did unplug my vcr which the stb was sitting on, had one crash in 10 days (which by current standards with ntl I believe is good).

i did ask the engy at the time of his visit and he was sure that was not the problem???

anyway never use vcr (dvds have taken over!) so will leave until I need it.

again, thanks!
