Can I do this..(aerial signal from cable)
Okay, I am currently only subscribed to NTL broadband. This week, the arial to the block of flats that I live in has gone out and stopped providing a signal for some reason that the landlord can't determine. Other people in the building have managed to use the NTL cable to get a signal for their tv's.
My question is, can I do this, only being subscribed to broadband, and if I can how do I go about doing so? |

quick answer, yes technically. Should you do it and risk ballsing up your broadband and causing ingress onto Ntl's network ? ...no |
Re: Can I do this..(aerial signal from cable)
As you say-you're only paying for BB, so you would need to ring up ntl & ask them if they can supply you with a TV package, & how much it would cost.

Like Wheelybin said, technically you can, you need a cable splitter and the appropriate coax and end, I'm sure someone in here can point you to the right place in maplins. But as was also suggested, if you affect the signal levels and knock your BB off then Ntl will charge you for a call out :) HTH |

But the biggest problem i see time and again is that people dont use the correct tools (which can be expensive). This often results in a badly stripped cable and a connector that isnt crimped on properly. Very often the first thing to be affected as the result of a badly made connector is the bottom range of frequencies including the return path spectrum, this means .......no broadband connection. The theory is that you simply split the cable using a 1ghz two way splitter and run a connector to the tv as well as the modem . The other thing to consider is that if you are near the end of the modems ability to range up its power level you may still lose the return path signal even if the connectors are made properly. The modem will need to power up an additional 3dbmv (approx) after having the 2 way splitter fitted. HTH |

I think I'll leave it though as although it's probably within my capabilities it sounds like too much hassle :) It's just so quiet here on my own without the tv for company :( |

maybe a call to the landlord asking why you are without an aerial would be in order , is it part of your contract you have with him/her :) |

Re: Can I do this..(aerial signal from cable)
Just do it, its very un likely you would notice any difference on the cable modem unless your using sommet like speaker wire :P

Re: Can I do this..(aerial signal from cable)
If you did want to try it, then the Maplin 2 way splitter (QQ69A) should work providing, as has been already mentioned, that your signal is strong enough to overcome the loss through the splitter.
They also sell ready made leads. F plug to F plug 1.5m (BM89W) or 5m (QQ77J). F plug to coax plug 2m (QQ74R). You will only see all the unencrypted channels if you have a TV capable of tuning outside the normal UHF television frequencies. |
