It's not clones - it's the zombies that live in all cable cabinets and eat any engineer that tries to upgrade anything.

It seems we all got a 2 hour spike yesterday at 4pm until 6pm

There are comments on that a few posts back. Somebody said it was a routing problem to TBB.

VMNG300 arrived, activated and running. Jitter noticeably lower... max ping spikes lower, avg latency, lower.

Will continue measuring throughout the day

After:

The spike before the power down was a speed test.

You sure? Mine was a refurb it came bubble wrapped without a power supply, did yours come in the Ambit box with a power supply?

Well to be honest i can't be completely sure, but it came with all it's cellophane "new" wrapping on, with the powersupply boxed... no box for the modem though, they just sent it in a large Jiffy bag, but i took off the cellophane and there isnt a single scratch or sign of previous use, it's in new condition

So after deciding to order Talktalk adsl to test the quality of the service, Virgin go and upgrade the area, 5 Downstream channels, and a different upstream.
