Cheap Laptop

Hi everyone, need to suggest a cheap laptop for my sister- in-law. I'm a bit out of the loop as I use a desktop, tablet or my work laptop.

She's wanting to spend as little as possible but wants to use iTunes for music on her iPod, basic browsing, emails etc. She may watch a bit of iPlayer, Netflix Amazon Prime. Anyone got any suggestions? Remember as cheap as possible while still being usable(ish)!!

Thanks

Hi Grim, if it was me I'd probably get one from Argos based on the low spec requirements. They're better than places like Currys/PC World if anything goes wrong. You could probably get something for around the £250 mark ?? (i haven't looked for a while but it's where I get mrs daveeb's gear from as all she wants to do is Youtube, spotify etc).

Re: Cheap Laptop

it's probably easiest to keep an eye on https://www.hotukdeals.com/

inevitability someone will post a deal for a good value/cheap laptop from dell or ebuyer (that's where I'd start browsing to get an idea what you can get for your money) etc, someone will say "that laptops rubbish as it's £300 and won't play the latest games" there will be some debate on how for £300 it's fine for browsing and not much else, which sounds like it's fine for your needs, and someone may post a link to a better value for money machine :)

that's what I did when I bought an HP for my missus several years ago, spent about £300 from ebuyer, still is fine for email, web browsing, spotify, you tube etc.

I'd also avoid Currys/pcworld, in the past they've had £600 machines reduced to £300 - so a half price computer is tempting, but it's an old model, and it's very possible this year's £300 is better than last year's £600.

Dell Outlet is also a good place to look.

Maybe you could look at a Chromebook. I do everything you have listed and not having to deal with Microsoft has been great. I still have my laptop as a back up but have not even powed it up for several years.

Re: Cheap Laptop

try box.co.uk they seem to have some decent prices. Maybe wait for cyber monday as well the prices might drop

Any semi decent laptop is around £500 at 15.6" there doesn't seem to be much in the way of budget laptops at the moment without going 2nd hand.

If they want new PC specialists have this

https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/noteb...raNoteVI-S-15/

It doesn't seem to bad for the price. I've used these a number of times laptops have been fine. There doesn't seem to be much around on the cheap new market that's worth less than £400 new

Whatever you get avoid MMC drives. Make sure it's SSD.

Hi Grim, in line with Hugh's stotage comment.

Just been talking to my son about a friend who is also looking for a new cheap laptop and, as she too wants to use itunes and may well also want to have a music library, he has advised her that any laptop she considers will need a decent amount of storage, which is something many cheaper laptops seem to skimp on.

You can also look at refurbished laptops. They have pluses and minuses but from a good company you can get some good buys with good cover, avoid fly by night boys that may be cheaper. Go for A rated and order a new battery as normally they only say battery will take a charge.
I have bought several for family (Lenovos) then put Linux on them.

I've had a great experience with these people when I bought a £130 Chrome laptop. Lots of Windows laptops at good prices too.
