Cancelling and porting number advice?

I take charge of the broadband and phone for my Mam's house. We've recently come to the end of a good deal with Virgin, sadly they can't match the offer Vodafone have at £24pm for phone and broadband (76Mb).

Now when I explained this to them they said they would put the 30 days notice in for the broadband and leave the phone line live so the number can be ported out to Vodafone. All well and good, matching an experience I had when I migrated to sky some years back.

So I place the order with Vodafone who advised that the number will be ported over. Service has gone live and number I want to keep (originally a BT number we've had for over 20 years) hasn't seamingly ported across. Vodafone state that Virgin needs to disconnect the line before they can apply to have the number ported across.

Virgin state the service has to remain live, this position supported by the Sky, Plusnet etc.

What do I need to do to get my number ported from VM to VF?

I moved home more than a year ago. I was told that there would be no problem keeping the same phone number. It turned out there is a bit more to it than that. The number reverts to BT and then VM or whoever has to pick it up again. It took a few days to sort out. So has VM handed it back to BT and do Vodafone need to pick it up from BT?

Number Ports on a landline are a 'pull' request.

It has to come from the new provider, in this case Vodafone.

When Virgin Media get a valid request they will either authorise it or give a valid reason for rejecting the request which Vodafone will see.

Do I need to be in the last 30 days for that to happen?

Nope. A number transfer can happen at any time, and gives notice to the existing provider to process a cancellation of the landline based on whatever terms that provider has.

For Virgin Media that's 30 days from the point the Number Port is accepted.

Number Ports take a minimum of 14 days on Openreach lines.

Is there a special reason it takes 30 days on a Virgin phone line?

Sorry should have been clearer.

Number Ports themselves take 10 working days.

However all disconnections of services with Virgin Media have a disconnection notice period of 30 days irrespective of how the disconnection was triggered.

Thanks for the replies guys, in the end we stayed with VM. Offered us 100Mb with Phone for £27pm, I know others have had better but for the hassle involved in changing it was definitely better sticking with the status quo IMHO.
