I do not think anyone on this forum takes your reviews seriously |
Re: Rate the last movie you saw
You can dismiss my opinions and laugh at me all you want but it doesn't mean they aren't genuine, sincere or a true reflection of the film. I give praise where it is due and constructively criticise when necessary.
To give you some perspective, I heavily criticised The 355 and Moonfall; both terrible films. Like you Paul, said I was too critical about Moonfall. The 355 cost $75m to make and made $26m at the cinema ($49m loss). Moonfall cost £150m to make and has made $32m at the cinema ($118m loss) I think that says something about the wider audience agreeing with me rather that a few people on this forum who think everything is fantastic. Have you ever thought that the reason why there aren't more negative comments is because people don't see the point or can't be bothered? I felt like that with the season finale to Boba Fett despite how critical or opinionated you may think I am. Some things are just so bad that they aren't even worth the time or effort and there have been a few occasions when the only reason why I have posted a review for a film was to warn people not to watch it. |
Re: Rate the last movie you saw
Oh I am 100% sure they are your genuine opinion and I do not laugh at you for expressing them. It is just your flawed reasoning on realism
People are more likely to complain than compliment |
Re: Rate the last movie you saw
I watched Moonfall and rather enjoyed it. Just what I want in a disaster movie. Entertaining and a good fun movie. Don't expect realism or the best acting performances.

1) They try launching the rocket and it fails for whatever the reason was and Halle Berry gives her moving speech, tells everyone to evacuate and you see literally everyone leaving. 5 minutes later when they decide they can launch and are going to go it alone all of a sudden there is a crew on the shuttle pad to help them get in and secure the hatches etc. 2) The rocket takes off. We know from many many times in real life that the rocket has to take off at a very specific angle to optimise fuel consumption and even heavy winds delay launches by days. In Moonfall you literally had a) a tidal wave impacting it and not making it fall over and b) it being submerged under water (which they acknowledge) and still managing to achieve thrust and take off 3) At the end when a tree falls on one of the characters and he is trapped and the moon gets close enough to the Earth that gravity is low enough that someone can lift the tree off him. If gravity is that low why doesn't the person lifting the tree float away? They are just three things which stood out like a sore thumb. I could write a flipping book on Moonfall but they are the kind of things which kills me. I can watch films like the Fast & Furious films and accept them as good fun action films (apart from the last one which also had a stupid space scene in it) but I find stuff like Moonfall painful to watch. It isn't even funny. In contrast, The Day After Tomorrow is a fantastic example of a quality disaster film which tries to put realism and science into the story/script which makes for a more immersive experience. The Core is another good one as well. |

Day after Tomorrow was also by the same director. He also wrote them along with writing and directing 2012, 10,000BC, Independence Day, Snargate. So I know really what to expect. He has also been labeled as the Master of Disaster. Which I'd agree with. Also in regards to you mentioning the finale of Book of Boba Fett it was utterly fantastic. |

On the subject of Uncharted movie goers seem to be enjoying it as over on Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a critics rating of just 40% approval, but it’s a certified hit among audiences: 90% of viewers recommend it. It’s a largely similar story on Google, where it currently commands a score of 4.2/5 – and on IMDB, it’s achieved a less stellar but still respectable 6.7/10 user score at the time I checked it.

Death on the Nile: 7/10
A good murder mystery with beautiful vistas and plenty of locations and scenic shots to compliment the setting of the film. Time is taken to establish the characters and certain story arcs at the beginning of the film in order to indulge in the thicker plot later on. I really enjoyed it and look forward to the next instalment in the franchise. As always, seeing Gal Gadot was the icing on the cake. |

The Batman (2022): 7/10
A pleasant surprise, I was expecting this to be a another mediocre turnout of the DC movie machine but it had me gripped throughout. Even though it is the same familiar characters which we have seen time and again this is less like the superhero and comic books iterations which we have seen before and a more grounded grittier version. The visual effect were top notch, the fight scenes very well choreographed and the soundtrack was simple but very powerful and effective. Some people moan about 3 hour films but you didn't feel it in this because it was so good. The film was as long as it needed to be to tell the story it wanted to, it was well paced and never felt like it was dragged out. I don't know how this sits in the DCEU but I would happily see more. Another pleasant surprise, I defo prefer Robert Pattinson as Batman than Batfleck. It goes without saying that it is one of those films that needs to be seen on the big screen for the sheer scope of the film and more noticeably on this occasion the sound. |

I had a big, single volume set of Batman stories as a child but got lost lent to a neighbour. Darkish but nothing like today's stories and much brighter when Robin was introduced. Fun ones with Batman/Batwoman married with children and retired. Robin and Batgirl are new Batman/Batwoman and the kids the new Robin/Batgirl.
I think the new stories just from news and the films are too dark. Prefer the silly 60's TV/films. |

I think you will be surprised at how different this film is compared to all the other version we have seen. It is analogous to how Daniel Craig's James Bonds compared to the other instalments in the franchise. As an example, I loved the action in the Dark Knight trilogy and it was a step up from what we have seen in the past but when you watch this it feels like it is real and he is actually punching the shit out of everyone. It may be to do with Robert Pattinson's acting or the sound editing or both but you definitely feel it and there were a couple of times I screwed my face and went "oof" because you could feel the pain :p: Quote:

Quite disappointing. I was really looking forward to this as I thought it was going to be another Gone Girl plus I love Ana de Armas. It is all style and no substance because there is no explanation or justification for why Ana de Armas' character behaves the way she does, no back story to the characters or family and everything happens for the sake of the story which makes it completely unrealistic. |

Morbius: 4/10
Yet another case this year of the trailer making the film look a million times better than it actually is and it is a shame because I was really looking forward to this. It is all style and no substance and literally went from him acquiring his powers to dealing with the bad guy. It could have done with an another 30 mins added to the running time to develop the origin story and see him explore his abilities. There is a scene in it which looks like it is ripped out of Batman Begins and even the music was pretty much the same. I had to look up the composer to see if Hans Zimmer did this film (which he didn't). Unless I was half asleep there is one thing which really really confused me. The film starts off with an opening scene in what is present day with him on an island doing something and then says "25 years ago........" and flips back. We never get back to him on the island and see the outcome of what he was doing so I don't understand the point of it. It was literally pointless and served no purpose. I would say this is a Sunday afternoon film but it isn't even that. It is the film you watch when you have ran out of Sunday afternoon films and have nothing else left. |

Just watched Sonic 2, it was good, the kids loved it. At 2 hours it was just a bit too long. The was a “wedding” sequence that could have been cut.
Idriss Elba as Knuckles is very good. Post credits scene, definitely a third movie and knowledgeable Sonic fans won’t be disappointed |
Re: Rate the last movie you saw
Watched Sonic 2 today. Enjoyed it more than i thought. It's a bit cheesy, but a good laugh (especially for the kids) and a couple of good easter eggs.
Also saw Morbius last night. Good points: Matt Smith as Milo (Morbius's surrogate brother and the bad guy), excellent effects (particularly the sequence where the go on the "Chicago" metro ("Chicago" is in quotes, as the station is clearly one of the Jubilee line patforms at Charing Cross, but it looks incredible when Morbius flies out in front of a train, and flies out into the Chicago metro). Bad points: The climatic fight scene that manages to be simultaneously confusing, and less impressive than most of the fights featured in Buffy The Vampire Slayer (which were impressive TBF, but Btvs was a TV series, and I expect more from a high budget movie, especially with the massive advances in Computer GFX since Btvs). Also, pretty much everything else, although the woman who is Dr Morbius's assistant has potential to be interesting in any sequels (she isn't really interesting in this, beyond looking stunning), and the post credits scenes hint at an interesting future. |

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness: 7/10
A very interesting story with a few very pleasant surprises which gave me big smiles. Visually spectacular and the story is setting a few things up. If I had to niggle I would say there wasn't any humour in it unlike most other MCU films. It did try in several places but it just didn't work; it wasn't funny. Definitely worth watching at the cinema. There are two post credit scenes as always, one half way through and one right at the end. A new trailer for Avatar 2 is shown prior to the film starting so keep your eyes peeled so you don't miss it. It looks amazing. If you would like to discuss this film in more detail I have started a separate thread here so you don't have to worry about putting everything in spoiler tags. |

Firestarter: 4/10
It is okay and borderline watchable. Although it is produced by Blumhouse I would say it is more scifi horror (leaning more towards scifi ) than pure horror and the problem is that it doesn't do either very well. It is horror without the horror and it is scifi without a good quality story. Everything is very superficial, the whole premise of the story is that the little girl can start fires and cause immense devastation but when she does do it the camera is always focused on her facial expression rather that showing us a visual effects extravaganza and what it actually happening. I could go on but I won't. My parting comment and food for thought from my realism factor: if she can miraculously teach herself some discipline and control her powers in the space of a few hours/days in the woods then wtf didn't she do it before? |

The Northman: 2/10
The less said about it the better. Just watch Vikings instead, it is a million times better. |
Re: Rate the last movie you saw
You must be a minority there, I really enjoyed it and also 7.7/10 on IMDB and 89% rotten tomatoes.
So most others did too. |
Re: Rate the last movie you saw
I honestly wanted to turn it off after 10 minutes and I kept going in 10 minute chunks hoping it would get better. The problem is that you can't help but compare to it Vikings and it fails in every respect. It lacks the scale, the story and everything else that Vikings does. The guy is supposed to be a king and the bulk of the film is spent on a farm. All the fight scenes felt overly choreographed and sluggish. Again, if that is all we ever had we wouldn't know better but I have seen it done better 1000 times in Vikings. People can argue that I shouldn't be comparing the two but it is only natural when you choose to make a film about Vikings and there has been a tv series around for the last 10 years. If I was making a film I would be aware of the comparison and be telling everyone we need to do it as good as Vikings and better.
|
Re: Rate the last movie you saw
Is Vilings accurate though or is it glammed up for TV? I've never seen it.
The Northman feels more visceral and looks gritty like you'd expect the era to be. They would likely be big brawls with big hits but because they were bigger its likely to seem slower. From the reviews I glanced over most were impressed by the look and feel of the film and how it draws you in. |
Re: Rate the last movie you saw
I believe it is historically accurate with regards to characters, locations and events. The problem a lot of people have is the time line. They condense hundreds of years of history into years and a couple of decades. That is why they ended Vikings and brought in Vikings Valhalla. It allowed them to do a significant time jump and move onto something new.

Re: Rate the last movie you saw
Forgot to mention another woke thing is they made a whole species gay and a main character.
Its like EVERY Marvel movie has an LBQTXYZ+ character, male characters are always weak, while their female replacement or co-star now made main star is ultra strong and the saviour of everything. I can't wait for phase 6 as I assume phase 5 movies being made now are all going to be just as woke and hopefully by phase the ridiculousness would have stopped. |
Re: Rate the last movie you saw
I really think you're overthinking it believing pretty mundane decisions to be the result of wokeism.
I don't think the male characters are weak, they're just a bit bumbling. Spiderman, Ironman, and Capitan America all are presented as strong characters both literally but also in terms of character. Marvel's style for a decade now though is to make them quippy and have moments of stupidity to try and make it lighter in tone and the characters relatable. It's a bit lazy of them but it isn't because of wokeism. Besides the bumbling male character has been a trope for decades. Thor is more extreme but only because these are the more lighthearted of the Marvel films. Hemsworth intentionally brought in Taika Waititi to make this kind of film because he didn't want to play the serious Thor from the first film. Marvel is trying to diversify their cast and outreach. Look at Ms Marvel, a show with a Pakistani-American hero that has the partition of India as a plot point, but that's a pretty healthy thing for them to do and also an economically sensible thing for them to do. Is that really woke? If it's justified by the plot and not shoehorned in for no reason? I don't think Marvel films do that. |
Re: Rate the last movie you saw
There was a day not long ago when being Woke used to mean being awake to what is really going on in the world (funnily enough adopted by conspiracy theorists) now it means something totally different. Shame really

Re: Rate the last movie you saw
Quote:
The new Doctor Strange was not about Doctor strange, he was minimalised to make it about a hispanic woman with two mums. Characters that have always been male were made female, such as on the council and the men made weak and the women strong. Thor did something similar. Woman Thor who is made to look stronger and more prominent than the actual Thor. Its not just Marvel its everywhere. As I said before, even stranger things shoe-horned in a lesbian thing halfway through the first episode and then did nothing with that until the last episode where they shoe-horned in a few minutes of the lesbian thing just minutes before it ended. Its so forced in. Lightyear was another movie where the script was done but then they wanted to add all the woke stuff and added it in to the script after it was finished. Something we see time and time again. A lot of these movies are not doing as well as expected and there are people boycotting them because of it too. Amazons Lord of the Rings based Rings of Power is going full woke too and having to hire actors/influencers to do fake interviews to shout about how good it is and how diverse it is etc, while pissing off genuine fans by the stuff they are doing for inclusivity and gender politics. Thats a whole other story and thread but so much wrong with that. ---------- Post added at 13:37 ---------- Previous post was at 13:35 ---------- Quote:
Woke rhymes better with broke, otherwise the Go woke, Go broke phrase would be a less memorable complicated affair ;) Ms Marvel is them trying to get a different audience. It makes sense financially if they feel they can get a demographic interested in Marvel films who were not before. Its ok if it mostly appeals to one demographic. The majority of normal Marvel film audience are not however LBGT+ and including something like this in EVERY movie hurts them more than it helps their virtue signalling. Movie rating sites have gone downhill in recent years and blaming review bombing they fiddle with the results to make it better for the studios who complained to them. They call it weighting but it goes well beyond that. Then we have Rotten tomatoes which I used to like but they changed their ratings too so it was hard to say a movie was bad even if a lot of critics said so. Its run by someone who spent most of their career working at Disney so it was no surprise to me that Ms Marvel rated extra high there despite all the bad reviews if you actually sat and went through them. Its a site I no longer trust for reviews. Because of the state of wokeness among movies and tv now, it has given rise to sites such as https://rightwingtomatoes.com/ which gives wokeness ratings as well as breaking it down in to diversity, misandry etc. These sites wouldn't exist without the current stupidness we are having. |

Strange World - 3/10.
The previews had looked average at best, but since I have limitless, I thought I would go and see this anyway. My mistake, I really should have read the reviews first - apparenly its quite a flop, and it was soon obvious why. Another case of Disney being more interested in ticking all the woke boxes instead of making a decent film. The star [a weak] white male (with daddy issues) was of course married to a [strong, clever] coloured woman. [who again inexplicably exists, as they all live in a land with no climate that would remotely result in coloured skin]. They have a teenage son, who is [of course] gay .... so add a dose of environmental disaster and you get the general idea (wind power saves the day, hurrah). The actual plot (as such) was all over the place and almost incomprehensible, in the end I think they all lived inside a giant turtle floating in an earth like sea (!). Not something I would waste time watching again. |
