Ping/latency

Hello everyone I have the hub 3 and 350mbps broadband but I'm wanting to lower my ping in games like call of duty and Fortnite in call of duty I get kicked from servers alot due to ping and in Fortnite my ping is 25 to 90 my friend has sky just basic fibre unlimited and he gets lower ping in games I can't afford a router so any ideas on what to try as I'm connected via ethernet cable also

Thank you for helping

Your friend is also on a different network.

I know that but paying for a gamer package with brilliant speed and high ping ain't good if you know what i mean

Sky fibre uses a different technology (VDSL2) which by default has lower latency than virgin's DOCSIS network. Not much you can do if you're already using the SH directly and have no other switches or gateways to remove.

Out of curiosity what do you get to say 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8?

Much higher the game is unplayable plus downloads take an age on those DNS servers I'm.using virgins own DNS at the moment it seems to be more stable and faster downloads ping is lower and a little stable also

Strange. DNS server latency would only impact the initial lookup so subsequent pings and downloads would be independent.

Exactly that's why I created this thread to see if anyone has any ideas

Re: Ping/latency

The issue may not be the VM DOCSIS tech rather the cable segment you are on and/or the path through the backhaul network to your game server?

Here's a Ping Plotter race to Google's DNS server. As you can see the hop to the switch after the CMTS (hop #3) is around 9ms and the final average to 8.8.8.8 is 15ms which is fine for most/all gaming scenarios.

I would run a traceroute (tracert or pathping on Windows) and see where you start seeing the latency and/or jitter starting.

One of my sons has similar trouble with Battlefield 5, always getting kicked. He has a high -spec gaming machine and is connected by ethernet to our home network. He gets 13ms ping in speed tests.

His partial solution, giving him a whole hour without being kicked, has been to create a dedicated desktop for playing games. He runs it in turbo mode so that all services unnecessary for on-line game play, that might clutter the network or take up processor time, are switched off.

We had tried running our router in Gaming mode and forwarding game server ports to his device, but this had no effect whatsoever.

there are a handful of contributory factors which the guys have eluded to above but your biggest problem by far is the technology your connection runs on; this has been an on going gripe for years and you see people whining about in on the VM forums all the time. There isn't anything you can do about it, even if you bought a proper router. If you think it is impacting your gaming performance that much then the only way to fix it is to switch to an Openreach connection.

As an fyi, the "gamer package" hasn't got anything to do with the gaming at all and in no way offers an improved quality of connection. The standard tier a couple of years ago was 200/12 and the "gamer" tier, presumably with hosting in mind, was 200/20, but I thought they had moved everyone off that and we all got upgraded to 350/20 and now 350/35.
