Any news on 5G

Just wondering if anybody has heard any news of when 5G will come to Virgin. I'm guessing they will wait until after next summer when their merge with O2 has settled down as I can't see them launching 5G with EE and then having to swap over to O2.

My Samsung Galaxy S8+ came out of contract this week so I might as well hang fire until I know whats happening. Ive been looking at the range of 5G ready phones on Virgin mobile so there's no hurry.

It took them long enough to get 4G so I imagine it will be another case of 'coming soon' and probably being the last carrier to get 5G.

Re: Any news on 5G

As the physical network operators are barely getting going with it themselves, I can't see them being in a hurry to be undercut by VNOs like Virgin.

Virgin Media’s current MVNO agreement with BT Enterprise, which has been in place since January 2017, will come to an end in late 2021, at which point Virgin Media’s mobile offering will transition to Vodafone. Virgin Mobile 5G services are set to launch on the Vodafone network before the transition takes place.

Just upgraded to 4G (ASDA mobile is cool and very cheap ;) ) Seems fast enough to me. Who really needs to download HD movies to a phone? 4G seems fast enough to me.

Re: Any news on 5G

But the Virgin partnership with O2 which was given the go ahead in the summer was said to be to compete against BT.

Now I'm starting to get confused. So it now sounds like it will be a Virgin/Vodaphone/O2 partnership.

Re: Any news on 5G

Virgin Mobile will be moving to the Vodafone radio network first. That agreement was signed before the JV was announced. That's the agreement that then allows for the launch of 5G as mentioned in Press Release.

Once the JV completes then that new entity will decide about what then happens for current Virgin Mobile customers and if / when a further radio network change is done.

At the moment you have to upgrade to get 5G along with the move onto the Vodafone signal, but as all customers have to be moved over to Vodafone by 2022, then existing SIMs will be moved over between now and then

Oh my thats disturbingly close..... I am very worried of being exposed to high signal levels of 24-39GHz,I have heard bad things can happen and im afraid of it....

People have been destroying 5G towers here in the states because its clear to us THEY DONT CARE IF ITS DANGEROUS.... They want the $$$$$$$$$$$ using these services and that puts us in possible danger!

If they would not use 24-39Ghz it wouldnt be a problem...... (The upper tier) -- 5G has other tiers it can use w/o possibly harming people.......

I'm no expert, but I would tend to disagree. 5G is in use in a lot of countries with little or no impact on disease rates. Also, that range of frequencies has been in use for decades with things like Radar.

The main danger 5G poses is the idiots who are doing things like attacking those who install it, and destroying the masts. Yes, destroying the masts *is* a danger because not only does it, in a lot of cases, prevent people calling the Emergency services, but the masts themselves often act as repeaters to enable the Emergency services to communicate. Any disruption with that can kill people.

Whenever somebody tries to pull any 5G bollox, I always refer them to largest source of dangerous ionising radiation proven to cause cancer that the person claiming the 5G conspiracy probably spends a large proportion of their wages to travel to places to be voluntarily exposed to dangerous levels of said radiation.

tbh on mobile devices the only time you will really benefit from 5G is when you run a speed test and be able to go "Wow look at that speed"

In my opinion it is only really useful as an alternative to wired home BB

In the southern part of my town I can get 5G, I spoke to the guy in O2 he said that 5G isn't at full power yet, but I got 170mg on a speed test.

I live about a mile from the town and there is a plan to put a 5G mast, the sooner the better.

the signal checker says my home has some access to 5G which it does. seems to come and go to be honest but i got 140mb on a speed check when it was on. all very odd as it says it has very good 5G access the next road along haha. i wonder if that will be fixed with a further tower or will they eventually increase the "power" of the existing one.

Either way its better than o2 as i never got 5G in my hosue at all on o2

As someone who only uses his phone for calls & texts, no email, streaming movies, gaming and uploading stuff to various social media sites . . what does 5G offer that 4G doesn't?

Is it just faster (by varying degree) depending on location and provider, is it more secure, better value for money?

Yes it is faster
Do not think it is any more or less secure
Yes it is better value for money as package prices do not change ( from what I have seen ) so more speed when you can get it is better value

For you it is pointless

It is one of them. Most people will only see the benefit when they run a speed test on their mobile device. I do not know many that download huge files on mobile, social media and streaming will not really improve with the greater bandwidth . The only ones who will benefit are those who use mobile data as their main BB for their home network, in that environment the difference could be substantial
