Heterosexual couple want same rights as homosexuals.

They are taking their fight to be able to enter into a civil partnership to the supreme court:

I support equality for gay people, but not superiority, so wish them every success.

They should allow straight people to enter into a civil partnership should they wish to do so, or scrap them for gay people IMO.

I can't see why they shouldn't allow the same for everyone, it might well simply be that Parliament can't be bothered to getting around to it?

The only thing is if the drafting of the original law contains something which complicates matters for marriage, existing couples or religious institutions should it be applied to everyone but I can't think what that would be.

Civil Partnerships vs. Marriage

Civil partnerships were introduced in the UK for same-sex couples to legally unite in something like a marriage, but without some of the same legal rights. They were essentially introduced as an interim measure before equal marriage was approved.

Fundamentally there are no major differences between civil partnerships and marriage but there are some differences including:

Civil partners cannot call themselves “married” for legal purposes.

Civil partnership certificates include the names of both parents of the parties. Marriage certificates include the names of only the fathers of the parties.

Adultery cannot be used as a reason to dissolve the Civil Partnership. In a marriage, if one party is unfaithful this is grounds for divorce. This isn’t the case in civil partnership dissolution. Adultery isn’t recognised in same-sex partners.
So people are fighting to give themselves less rights...

To them it's a political/religious statement though. An intentional act to reject the religious connotation of marriage. At least that's my impression.

Registry Office wedding isn’t religious.

Here are the options for the wording of the ceremony.

It's still a 'marriage' though? Don't underestimate the degree to which people can get worked up over this stuff....

True...

Strange, giving yourself less legal rights because you don't want to be "married", but want to have a legal basis for your relationship.

Whatever floats their boat.

It would give them more legal rights than being in a "Common Law" relationship.

... especially as “common law” marriage was abolished in the 18th century ;)

Which explains my post. It would give them legal rights they may think they have which they don't.

But less than a civil marriage.

There has never been any other relationship recognised in common law. If you didn’t mean marriage, your post was meaningless. I assumed it wasn’t meaningless.

All I know is that as married man I have no rights, or so Mrs K says ;) Quite like the sound of a Civil partnership, can I have one of those aswell?
