What's going to happen when about upstream speed?

How good really is ADSL 512/256? If you look in detail the ISPs seem to qualify the 256 up as beween 64 and 256...

Yep - as far as anyone knows / has said.

The original speed increase thread had various posts from more than one NTL associate, all saying that only the download speeds are being increased - no upload increase.

Do you think 750/128 is good enough to compete with 512/256?

I wonder when BT will advertise against this or Telewest will up theirs, either/both kicking ntl into another round of upgrades.

hmmm - not to have a go, but I will be very surprised if everyone gets the increase on August 1st , more like some will, beginning the 1st of August & rolled out from there.

Like I said, thats not a dig, I just think there may be more involved than something akin to a guy stood next to a big red button, about to say "I now declare this speed increase operational" ;)

I hope I'm wrong, but I think it might be a mistake to anticipate too much and end up ranting that ntl don't keep their (still at this point alleged, don't forget) word.

it depends really, the rollout may occour in most areas, with some left until later... it depends on the maintainence windows, i guess we will have to keep an eye out on the service status :)

Time to downgrade to the 600k service. I am not happy about those dates. First they make 1mb users pay more then they make them wait another month over the 600k users for the speed bump.

Bad show NTL!

Bad show NTL!

Read the story again. The delay in 1Mb upgrades is only for STB users, and it's because STBs have to be replaced to a newer model if they are to handle 1.5Mb. SACM users will all be upgraded at the same time, whatever their current service level (depending on area). Being in Cardiff, you're using a SACM, and so (assuming the details in the news story are correct) will be upgraded at the same time as everyone else in your area.

good news, but I will still wait for it to happen before I get excited, this is NTL we're talking about ;)

can somebody refresh my memory as to why the 600k service isn't having a 50% increase? I can see it spaces the tiers evenly but it doesn't seem very fair unless there is a price cut due, to compensate, which I doubt.

You're getting a 25% increase for nothing - and your tier wasn't previously affected by the price rises either - pray tell, what is not 'fair' about that??

orangebird one thing that amazes me, we (my family) have been NTL customers since (cabletel for a few years till it was taken over) 1998. not one day have i recieved a phone call giving me an incentive to either take up services or give me a discount.

now sky have offered me products at discounted prices on a few occasions. we have been sky digital customers since 2000-2001

now whos talking about loyalty ? SKY may increase prices but so do others...

NTL missed oppertunties for revenue and are creating more disgruntled customers...

Typical NTL response there is resorting to insults by accusing someone to grow up.

Have you not familiarised yourself with the T&Cs here.

:dunce: Silly me of course you have.

And where your part of the next quote about cancer comes who knows.

Dam and there was me thinking this thread was about speed increases not your chances of getting hit by a bus or developing cancer.

I suppose typical reaction then from your first post in this thread

I guess most NTL employees follow your stance then with the diplomacyand tact side or patience as they too seem not to care about the customer.

As for your signature as to how the hell did I get 10 balls †“

Well to me it is obvious because of the caring and helpful assistance you give here but this obviously this seems to wander determined by your mood.

:D

Now to somehow drag this back to the topic by increasing the speeds, this is not really giving the customer extra only making up for the shortfall that already exists.

Who are you to say anyone is uncaring. How can you say that of someone you have not met.

How can you say its not giving something back, even if it is only 25% thats something. Now if you have a problem with your service have you reported this to faults. Then you can make up your shortfall as you put it

Re: CF receive broadband speed upgrade Dates

For people complaining that the percentages aren't equal, try thinking about it like this:

orig speed...new speed....orig price...new price....speed inc....price inc

128K.........300K......... £14.99.......Ãâ₠¬Å¡Ãƒâ€šÃ‚£17.99.......134%.........20%
512K.........750K......... £24.99.......Ãâ₠¬Å¡Ãƒâ€šÃ‚£24.99.......46%..........0%
1MB..........1.5MB........ £34.99*......Ãâ₠¬Å¡Ãƒâ€šÃ‚£37.99.......50%..........9%

Interesting, no? The bronze service has the biggest price increase, but also the biggest speed increase. The gold service has just under half the price increase, and a little under half the speed increase (seems pretty fair). The silver service, which people seem to be moaning about, has an increase almost the same as the gold service with NO price increase - in terms of value, you're easily getting the best deal!

* I ignored the very original price of fifty quid as being an introductory thing (+ it screws up the maths!)

Well, the installer type bloke turned up early .... :Yikes: , and I've now got one of the samsung boxes, albeit without audio outputs on the back. bugger.

Ah well, at least it now matches everything else :)

Talking to the guy who fitted it, he reckons he's got over a hundred to swap out in sunderland alone, and for today, gets paid a tenner per box.....this doubles to £20 per box swapped tomorrow :Yikes::Yikes:

Its a real shame the "trusted source" gave out the wrong info any1 in the know knew that 1st August couldnt be the date 3 weeks ago - Harmony Launch schedules won't allow the 1st. Maybe they should check agian

In my not so humble opinion it's a shame the 'trusted source' commented at all, and bloody negligent besides. Those of us who see how much work is being done to make sure all is ready for this uplift will know that things can and do go wrong, and if it had been delayed thousands of people would have moaned like crazy and hammered the phone lines thanks to a single pair of loose lips.

I just hope for whatever reason it doesn't slip now that Mr 'what NDA, O the one that says P45 if caught giving info away' blabbed. This is the reason the dates were vague due to quantity of work to be done to be safe and if whoever did this understood that rather than getting the info from either a team brief or overhearing a conference call or something they would have kept their big mouth shut

I dont believe this is the correct date, the 1st of August is a Sunday. For a change like this you would want support people etc on call and that costs a lot of money on a sunday. Surely out of all the days in the week the sunday would be the worst, thats why i dont believe this is the correct date.

But if NTL uk had been competant enough to set out a plan that includes time for setbacks, then a target date would be easily announceable, IE NTL Ireland, you wouldnt need to complain about "trusted sources" if NTL (UK) were more open to its customers in the first place..

Rant off :P

'Loose lips' as you refer, has not been negligent at all, far from it.

People have been moaning anyway and why does everything have to be so hush hush? NTL as we know, is a cable company not the secret service, it pays to actually communicate with their customers, a lesson they still have not learned over the years, almost into four months since the annoucement and not any official update from ntl to give any indication on a set of dates for these speeds. If they had, it would not need a set of 'loose lips' to give out such information.

We are still in the car to where ever with the kids in the back going "are we there yet?"

How many times have any parents here had that experience? ;)

So why keep asking? It will happen when it happens and not a moment sooner.

WE have been given a date and that still hasn't satisfied the so impatient chil...members of the forum.

In the past I had to wait 16 months to get free dial up with NTL so frankly waiting 4/5 months for a BB upgrade is a doddle in comparison.

Trouble is if NTL had said nothing about the upgrades then everyone would have been asking why Telewest could do it but NTL couldn't.....
So they told us about it but of course they still can't win because....well some of us really need to get a sense of proportion about the matter I reckon.

Incog.

OK going off the dates that have been posted as I have an STB i have to wait till September to get the speed increase, yet people with SACMs get it a month earlier? Do I get some discount then seeing as I am paying more for a slower speed?

Nice try but no cigar!! :D

I'll get a discount or I will cancel everything, not impressed with the service we have had lately given that the whole lot has gone off around 4 times in the past couple of months and NTL have not been bothered at all

Re: CF receive broadband speed upgrade Dates

Have you actually read the posts about the STBs having to be replaced in order to take 1.5Mb?

LostintheNW 17-07-2004 22:59

Re: CF receive broadband speed upgrade Dates

Yes I have read the post about the STBs being replaced, and I got the letter a couple of weeks ago about getting a new one.....still doesnt mean I should have to wait

poolking 17-07-2004 23:11

Re: CF receive broadband speed upgrade Dates

So you expect to jump to the head of the queue for a new STB?

LostintheNW 17-07-2004 23:30

Re: CF receive broadband speed upgrade Dates

Nope never said I wanted to jump to the head of the queue....I have actually asked in the past for a SACM due to the BB causing problems with the tv and all they ever did was replace the STB and things are fine for a couple of weeks, then its locking box, no internet etc and I was actually told I did not need a new STB when the speed increases were announced

Ring sales on Monday and ask for a SACM, you'll be able to get one fitted no problem

LostintheNW 17-07-2004 23:37

Re: CF receive broadband speed upgrade Dates

Thanks Debsy...although last time I asked I was told that this would mean another 12 month BB contract with them, which I couldn't understand why as I wasn't cancelling the BB just asking for the problems to be sorted out. I'll give them another try and see what they say this time

Anyone who commented on ntl not saying anything and not being open, I absolutely agree.

Considering the hard work and really heavy upgrade schedule that's being done, millions and millions of pounds of new kit, would be lovely to blow the trumpet a bit.

Oh well!

Indeed, a company with any decent marketing team, would be shoving this down customers necks, and advertising it like mad, and yes, blow your trumpet like a gooden, its a damn shame that sometimes NTL seem more like the KGB than a customer orientated company.

Just maybe ntl decided to upgrade the whole network, and give everyone a speed increase, in order to be totally ahead of the market. This was expected to take a while, and a lot of work, and equipment, and more than a few quid, so they said "We will switch it on for all subscribers later in the summer, coz after all it is costing you Jack and its FREE".

And so it came to pass that various impetuous, impatient, ill advised, ill conceived, misinformed, pre-emptive, downright ignorant, speculative and foolishly misguided individuals conspired to sound off about how the free upgrade was unreasonable in their own selfish circumstances, and why was it taking so long anyway?

Perhaps, when its all done, and every BB subscriber has got the benefit of a free speed increase, ntl will shout it from the rafters.

:( Sorry m8, but certain NTL Staff do adopt this attitude of not caring just to get a sale.

I know that from experience ;)

:) You nicely snipped my post but if you read it properly you would have realized I was not suggesting it was aimed at Orangebird as if you read further on I commented as to how she got 10 pips/balls for her helpful posts and assistance offered on many occasions here. :p:

As for not meeting her, well how do you I havenââ‚ƚ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢t. ;)

Also as for me reporting problems with my service to faults, well if you had been around here longer than 9 posts and a couple of days you may have noticed I have been a member here since day 1 and not an NTL Customer in any shape of form and was an Ex NTL Cable Modem Senior so I fairly qualified to know what used to go on in Sales and what apparently still does. :td:

Not that I need to but I will give an example of the shed loads of complaints we used to deal with in CM Tech Support about customers being sold the Cable Modem Package and told it will work - for example USB on Windows 95 or very under spec system. :td:

Again the information given to the customer by the sales team is sometimes coming from the wrong hole just to get a sale.

Welcome back Bill glad to see you back on the forums. :D

Bill I can say does face the customer and helps sort out the problems.. He is my life saver as I am the fortunate one that lives in the area Bill covers and I know if a problem arises and I am getting nowhere with tech support that Bill will sort it. I hope each area has someone like Bill looking after them..
As I am sure Carlingman knows you have been around from the start of .co.uk

Some foolish people conspired to release the fact that NTL were upgrading their speed? wrong, there is a (Very hidden) Press release on the NTL site, saying they were upgrading the broadband speeds, If you meant the date however (if you do thats very poor wording), Mick put a good argument to that as well.
