- Shooter -

Went to see this at the weekend and it is definately a movie that looks and sounds great on the big screen.

If you like films such as "Bourne Identity", "Man On Fire", and Tv series such as "24", you will like this film.

Lot's of action, good storyline, good acting, one of my fave films so far this year.

anything by Danny Kaye is ok by me - can't remember the name of it but the one where the 'dominant' twin is killed and comes back as a ghost & inspires his ex sibling to exceed his expectations and nail his brothers killers, refers - they don't make them like that, any more, for sure ;)

Last two films I saw:

Sunshine

Excellent film. Danny Boyle does Sci Fi.

Good cast, good script. Excellent feeling of paranoia. If I had to pick on something, I'd say that there are a lot of references to 2001. Not that this is a bad thing, but I did find myself spotting the references rather than watching the film.

8/10

The Reaping
Another good film. Hilary Swank does a good job of playing a sort of Paranormal investigator who experiences the events described in Exodus. Typical Joel Silver/Robert Zemeckis fare. Looks brilliant, sounds good, actually unnerving in fun sort of way.

Well worth a couple of hours of anyone's time.

8/10

Eragon 9/10

Ok, spent much of the film replacing the charactors names with their Star Wars counterparts (it's basically the same plot) but that was about the only "bad" thing with this film, and even then, if you've got a plot that works, why not use it? ;)
Acting was good, charactors were great, you really routed for them, John Malcavich plays his usual melodramatic baddy but it fits, and Robert Carlisle as an evil sorcerer was great.
Full of action for most of it, though a little slow to start.
Computer graphics were great, they even managed to get a baby dragon with a rat's tail dangling out it's mouth look cute :)

Weekend at Bernies II - Saw it on telly years ago but managed to get hold of it on R1 DVD for another watch

Slow starter, predictable and some of the acting as abysmal but the funny bits are side splitting and easily make up for the major shortcomings. Well worth a watch for a good laugh.

I actually quite liked Doom too. Nothing compared to the game (zombie virus instead of a gateway to hell??!!), but still an enjoyable cheesy SF action flick.

Never watched Saw 1 or 2, jumped straight to 3, can't say I was that impressed, the 'horror' scenes were like something out of a 1970's Hammer House of Horror show :p:

Just finished watching Ice Age 2 - the Meltdown, which is sort of ice age meets global warming.

The animation is cleverer than the first one (especially the fur) but the story is much weaker. There are plenty of gags but not half as many of the powerful, heart-warming moments like "That's what you do in a herd - you look out for each other."

Could do better.

The Queen 10/10
Managed to bring tears to my eyes on a few occasions, Helen Mirren is fantastic.
They have Cherie Bliar down to a T aswell.

The Prestige 8/10
Very interesting, the long flashback style of the journal entries may confuse a few people, and as with all magic, the result is obvious when you know how.
Worth watching, but not the sort of film you'd watch more than once.

I watched this movie a couple of hours ago, and i really enjoyed it.

It had a good story to it, and a good cast, who played their roles well.

Justin Timberlake, i must admit played a good role, and in one of the scenes really brought emotion to the movie which was great.

This movie is deep, and i highly recommend watching it.

28 Weeks Later - surprisingly impressed with this although the director needs to get smacked upside the head for the too-fast-and-jerking camera motion used for most of the attack scenes.

I'd give it a 7 out of 10 - it drops marks for the final 10 seconds which is one of the worst endings to a film, and leaves it far too wide open for another sequel.

That's true but the ending was typical Hollywood, so there's bound to be a third film (28 months anyone?) in the making.

What I don't understand is...

Spoiler:
How did Robert Carlyle's character survive the carpet bombing? How did he manage to get access to the quarantine areas which contained a VERY contagious and dangerous virus? I know he was a 'caretaker' type but there's no way he'd get such access in a military are.

I reckon

Spoiler:

He found another under Thames walk way which the American's didn't notice, just like the unprotected/unbarricaded one that the main charactors managed to get out of.
The incompetence of the Americans was demonstrated by them putting everyone into a dark underground carpark and forgetting to lock the back doors.
Getting everyone out onto a rooftop where the only access (stairs) can be protected would have been much more sensible.

And a bargain too.... only £12.99 at Movietyme! That's cheaper than the DVD, lol. Ignore the release date - it is out now ('cos I got it from them last week!).

Pirates of the Caribbean - At World's End

Hmm.

6/10.

A mess.

Some very spectacular scenes, plus the odd really good bits & funny bits (Geoffrey Rush was excellent as always, the monkey was funny, & Keith Richards was great in his little cameo), but.... a mess.

At one point one of Lord Beckett's men said to him, regarding Jack Sparrow, "Do you think he plans it all out, or just makes it up as he goes along?".

I think the same could be said of Verbinski & the writers.

Pirates 1 - excellent.

Pirates 2 & 3 - OK, but rather nonsensical (especially no.3), definitely too long, & full of bits where they must have gone "Oh, we've still got loads of money left from the budget...what pointless OTT bit should we tack on now?".

I actually agree. There were some good bits, especially the bits where jack talks to himself..

Spoiler:
Also, I loved the bit where Jack says how Pirates could be a little unimaginative with names, then goes on to talk about the pirate who lost both legs, one arm and part of his eye. Geoffrey Rush says "What was his name then?" to which the reply was "Erm, Frank"..

But, in general, the film was overlong and the story didn't seem to hang together well.

Shakespeare in Love (1998)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0138097/

If you're going to make a film about Shakespeare then why not do it in the style of - well, Shakespeare? Something of a high-risk strategy, perhaps, but this film pulls it off magnificently. All the Shakespearean devices are there: a play within a play; confusion over identities; swapped gender; the flow split between characters; slapstick; a strong story. All this together with some modern day gags - "Follow that cab!".

Playwright Tom Stoppard shares the credit for the script which is excellent. Sometimes the language is difficult to follow but it's not half as bad as 'real' Shakespeare. If you'd quite like to understand more of the Bard but struggle with the language then this is an excellent way in. It neatly side-steps the problem of trying to re-write the plays in modern day language.

No wonder it received seven Oscars. Recommended.

It have one of the weirdest storylines i have ever seen, about a family that come across this strange tunnel near their new home, walk through and end up in a bath house for the spirits (yeah - i told you) but i thouroughly enjoyed it.

I'd give it an 8/10 at least.

Check it out here... http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0245429/, gets 8.5 /10 out of 15,000 votes.

You do need to disengage any rational thought for it though.

That film was great, you should watch 'grave of the fireflies' if you get time, i warn you, its a depressing film though. and animes cant generally upset me.

Anyway, last film i watched was sunshine (sci-fi) thought it was so-so 5/10

Also watched De Ja Vu, extremely **** poor boring film 2/10

And watched pirates of the caribean 3 today which i quite enjoyed 7/10

Stranger than Fiction 9/10

Saw a trailer ages ago and forgot about it. A really great movie, well written and shot. Not the type of film you expect to see Will Ferrell in!! Worth a viewing.

I also watched Wolf Creek a few nights back. It was pretty good, although I felt it took a long time for the main story to really emerge. 7/10 from me.

I still squirm when I think about that scene. At first I thought he was just going to slice her achiles, but when he started twisting the knife in the base of her spine and everything was crunching away, it was horrible.

Good film too......

Fantastic 4 - Rise of the Silver Surfer 6/10

Obviously, the best thing about it is the Silver Surfer and whenever he's not in it, it just bumbles along.

Dr Doom is shoe horned into the plot. It's not bad but could have been so much better.

X-Men 3. I'd give it a 6/10 as a stand-alone film, i guess you need to watch the others to get the storyline fully?

Erm, a 10 year old one here, but I'd never seen it for some reason...

Starship Troopers - 8/10 :) Could easily tell from the style that it was done by the director of Robocop (also a cracking film :))

Starship Troopers was a fantastic film. At least I think it was. Well, I enjoyed it when I watched it ages back, anyway.

Alpha Dog - 9/10

A true story too unfortunately - definitely not a feel good movie and one i don't think i'll ever forget.

Very depressing but compelling viewing.

Stranger than Fiction - 8/10

Another good movie by Will Ferrell, a black comedy / tragedy. Very sad but a good film.

Tip: Dont watch these two back to back, im almost suicidal...

Fight Club. Just now, infact. One of my favourite movies of all time, with a shadow of a doubt.

A great plot, twists and turns meant that this movie secured a 10/10 from me.

By the Power of Greyskull! :D

Excellent

9/10

Great cast too...some familiar people (Timothy "Bond / Prince Barin" Dalton, Bill Nighy, Jim Broadbent, Bill Bailey, Steve Coogan, etc.), plus also "Sophie" from Peep Show & some randoms like Adam from the Adam & Joe Show, & the guy who played "Simon Quinlank" (& more) from Lee & Herring.

Yeah, but it was still quite a sad movie... Worthy, but sad..

Anyhoo - Oceans 13.

Great Sunday night cinema material - couldn't fault it, funny, entertaining and put a smile on my face. A 9/10

Somebody told me that in all 3 movies, in every scene Brad Pitt is either eating or drinking, i cant comment on one or two as i wasnt looking for it but in 13 he is.. Why??? :D

I watched 28 Days Later on TV last night for the first time, the wife run off to bed as the machettes came out and arms came off but regardless of that i actually enjoyed the movie.....albeit on me own:erm:
I think it`s the first time i`ve seen a zombie like film where the bloody zombies could run as fast as the un-affected though.

I had to drag myself out of bed at 4 for work this morning and driving through London was a just wee bit earie to say the least.

Going to watch 28 weeks later ...later.

Well, I watched the original Japanese "The Ring" last night. Excellent film. Well acted (although the leading lady seemed to be scared the whole time, I think this was deliberate). I didn't think it was that scary until I heard something move in the house (something fell over outside my room), and then I almost.. Well, what I almost did would be blocked by the swear filter if I typed it.

9/10.
