Changing jobs again, hopefully
The Hermes job is really getting to me, because a) some of the time they've too many temps and I don't even work that night, and b) the train fare's nearly £70 a week.
However, I've just had a call from another agency offering me an induction tomorrow and, I hope, starting that same night! It's in Wigan, much closer, and hopefully a lot more regular! More details later! There is one odd thing, though: I was asked on the form if I had any convictions, unspent or not. Under the terms of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (1974), I'm not at all sure they have any legal right to ask about spent convictions. Unspent, yes, but spent? |

Some jobs can still ask for spent convictions. I guess part of it is that if disclosed no-one can try to bribe or blackmail you.

Re: Changing jobs again, hopefully
are we talking driving offences or serious criminal offences?

If you are delivering and collecting parcels you may need to be subject to enhanced aviation security vetting. Parcels you collect could end up on cargo planes or even passenger planes if being sent to another country. I had to go through all this when I started working for a major parcel company 12 years ago.

Re: Changing jobs again, hopefully
Thanks, guys. I've had the induction, and the work sounds very much like an earlier job I did for 10 years and can easily do again, so I've decided: the hell with it, since it doesn't actually affect me. It's just down to some busybody in Personnel, I suppose.
Please note my refusal to use the repulsive term 'human resources'. That term reduces people to the level of photocopiers. There's a definition of 'resource' here which sums it up nicely. Thus, e.g., a pen, a desk, a computer, or an FLT are resources. People are people. Not objects. People. I have never used the term and never will. You'll note from the time of posting that I am not in fact at work. That's okay, because I misheard what the agency contact said - the line was a bit crackly. She actually said I could be starting on the same date as the induction, not that I would be. Oops. They'll call me when I'm starting. The site is currently expanding, which is why they're recruiting, which is good news - it means the job is more likely to be secure and far more regular than Hermes was. I'll let you know how it goes! |
Re: Changing jobs again, hopefully
Glad to hear that you will be cutting down on your travel to work Mr Mouse. Fingers crossed for you that this job will be a better fit than those that you have had to endure of late. So roll on a start date. :)

Re: Changing jobs again, hopefully
Probably it would have been a good fit...except for the fact that despite the different name it's a company I was once dismissed from (long story I do not want to tell), and their policy is that they don't take people back. So I'm back to square one, looking for a job.
Oh well. I've found work before, I will again. |
Re: Changing jobs again, hopefully
I am sure you will find another job Mr Mouse. With a little luck there will be more jobs going now that coronavirus restrictions are being lifted Fingers crossed for you.

I wish ya luck in your job change buddy :)
