How to remove water stain from oak?

Hi everyone,

Do anyone know the best way to remove water stains off my oak coffee table?

Many thanks,

Hal.

Is it treated or plain wood?

If they're dark stains you can try some dilute bleach applied with a cotton bud. If there's a finish it will need to be removed before you can get to the stain.

I had to get some stains out of a varnished wood window sill that were the result of pot plants overflowing. There I took the varnish off with a palm sander, treated the stains as above. Once they were mainly removed I then refinished with a new coat of stain/varnish. Not perfect but you'd have to look pretty hard.

Thanks everyone.

The wood is treated with Colron bees wax. They are sort of see through stains.

Probably need to use some white spirit to remove the wax around the stain before treating it.

If you are lucky the underside of the table will have the same finish and if this is the case try out heero's suggestion there first. You may need to strip the whole top area to get an even colour when you reapply the bees wax finish.. As it's oak the water damage could result in a grey stain which you may need to sand to remove or lessen the damage.

Actually I have a similar problem to tackle on a very nice G-Plan Brandon sideboard that I inherited from my mother. This time the oak is a very pale finish but again plant pots were allowed to overflow and there are circular dark water stains.

With wax finishes I have had good results with a little dry bicarbonate of soda rubbed lightly with a dry cloth. It acts like a fine abrasive but also absorbs discoloured wax.

Try in a hidden area first of course, as waxes are not all the same.
