1st 128K took 10 ms = 13107200 Bytes/sec = approx 109052 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 10 ms = 13107200 Bytes/sec = approx 109052 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 10 ms = 13107200 Bytes/sec = approx 109052 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 20 ms = 6553600 Bytes/sec = approx 54526 kbits/sec

Now that is silly.

tried it again and now
1st 128K took 20 ms = 6553600 Bytes/sec = approx 54526 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 30 ms = 4369067 Bytes/sec = approx 36351 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 20 ms = 6553600 Bytes/sec = approx 54526 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 20 ms = 6553600 Bytes/sec = approx 54526 kbits/sec

Argh! the electrical storm has turned my STB evil!

... Good ping rates though...

(Yeah, I know. I was bored :dozey: )

Believe it or not, you chaps who posted work speeds have faster internet at work than I do! My home internet is faster than work!

I know you guys like Robin Walker's test but to be honest more comprehensive and accurate speedtests can be found at http://www.adslguide.org.uk/tools/speedtest.asp and http://www.numion.org/MaxSpeed/index.html

Re: [Merged] BB Speed Upgrades

I actually made my own modification of Robin Walker's speedtest - All it really does is increase the payload by 8x from 128K to 1024K. Gives much more consistent results for faster connections. (Oops... I forgot to change the "128K" text to "1024K" when I uploaded...)

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/xuepei/st.html

Actually I find the ADSLGuide speed test extremely innaccurate - Just tried it with the following results :

First run :

Downstream
around 50000 Kbps

Upstream
around 80 Kbps

(MaxSpeed crashed my browser so I havnt got the actual values)

Second run :

Downstream
22850 Kbps (2,856.3 KB/sec)
24678 Kbps (inc. overheads)

Upstream
34 Kbps (4.3 KB/sec)
36 Kbps (inc. overheads)

Somehow I don't think the 5MB upload I just did to a US server in 4 seconds went at 34Kbps... or 80Kbps for that matter...

And the MaxSpeed test?

First run : Downstream 5mbps Upstream 8mbps

Second run : applet froze

Third run : crashed my browser (and took all 8 other windows along with it, including the one in which i was typing this post, so I had to start again)

Hmm... I think I'll stick to Robin Walker's test, for "normal" connections and my mod for "fat pipe" connections...

Re: [Merged] BB Speed Upgrades

A few probs with ADSLGuide on upstream, browser dependent :(

Downstream is usually there or there abouts though.

Nice speedtest of yours by the way, simple but v useful from my point of view.

I have already posted a visually better cable/adsl (and covers dialup) speed test page here

Robins test :

Thu, 05 Aug 2004 18:52:31 GMT
1st 128K took 687 ms = 190789 Bytes/sec = approx 1587 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 750 ms = 174763 Bytes/sec = approx 1454 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 735 ms = 178329 Bytes/sec = approx 1484 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 656 ms = 199805 Bytes/sec = approx 1662 kbits/sec

ADSLGuide test

Downstream 1426 Kbps (178.3 KB/sec) 1540 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream 243 Kbps (30.4 KB/sec) 262 Kbps (inc. overheads)
