Rollout of the HUB5

Any news on this? still waiting to hear from VM.

I had one, it lasted 4 months before it died, it felt like it was a beta test thing, I'm back to SHub4 now with no issues.

I don't want to risk it seeing how rough the Broadband Quality Monitor looks compared to me Hub3.

In these days of high energy costs why would I want to add even more permanently on hardware?

The average router uses about 10 watts, which at 35p per KWH means roughly £2.50 a month.

or £30 a year. It all adds up when you are on a low income

for me its more functionality over cost with both the hub 4 and 3 before it i always found the wifi coverage to be shocking to the fact that literally outside the room its in it was just unusable, id blame it on the fact ive got an old house with fairly thick but with my current setup i can still pick my wifi up half way up the street

maybe the hub 5 will be better i don't know till it arrives, sure id like to have less devices plugged in but but hey ho im not going to complain over a couple of watts when it comes to usable or non usable, im sure the google homes i got sitting there doing little most of the time use more than my router

This is not rough, it looks like a normal VM graph for Hub2/3, it's the best I've seen.

Order cancelled at their end as I have a 4 with Pods and the 5 isn't compatible with my account settings.....

How long was it before it appeared in your orders on the account? I have one pod that was used once and put back into the box as it's no good I hope this doesn't stop me from getting this.

Re: Rollout of the HUB5

Applied for the HUB 5, I got the confirmation email, but a few days later I got this email...
Quote:

Hello,

We know you’re expecting a Hub 5, but we’re sorry to say that some of your account features won’t work with this Hub quite yet. This could be because you’ve just upgraded to Hub 4, you’ve got WiFi Pods or your order needs to be installed by a technician instead of installing it yourself with QuickStart.

Unfortunately, that means we’ve had to cancel the order. We’re really sorry about that. You don’t need to do anything, just carry on using your current Hub as usual.

We’ll be making Hub 5 more widely available in 2022 - and don’t worry, we’ll let you know as soon as it’s compatible with your account.

Kind regards,

The Virgin Media team
I've had the HUB 4 since upgrading to the 1Gig about 3+ years ago (which I installed myself from the HUB 3) I've never had any WiFi Pods and don't have any other service just broadband.

BenMcr 27-09-2022 09:32

Re: Rollout of the HUB5

It'll be because you've got a Hub 4 - currently those with a Hub 4 don't qualify for the Hub 5 upgrade option.

MPH 27-09-2022 12:19

Re: Rollout of the HUB5

Hi BenMcr, that's the first time I have a straightforward answer as to why I can't have a Hub 5 so thank you for that.
I still find it frustrating those on the top tier don't have access to the
latest Hub & ironically are effectively being penalised as an early adopter.
(On Gig1 with a Hub 4 trying to get a Hub 5 so I can use the 2.5GB port)

Any idea when this might change?

Thanks

BenMcr 27-09-2022 12:26

Re: Rollout of the HUB5

No news yet, but I wouldn't expect it to be very soon.

Although I appreciate the point about home networking capability, swapping a Hub 4 for Hub 5 is the least overall effective change Virgin Media can currently make with hardware swaps.

Offering the Hub 5 to customers without D3.1 capable kit, in the same way as was being done with the Hub 4 recently can potentially improve the network performance for everyone, as each new version of DOCSIS is more efficient than the previous version.

So it's better use of available hardware resources and network capacity expenditure.

They are being offered swaps to D3.1 capable kit where it can help with network capacity. That was a Hub 4 up till recently and is now a Hub 5.

But it's not blanket swap if it's not needed.

MPH 27-09-2022 12:58

Re: Rollout of the HUB5

Thanks BenMcr, bad news for me & others waiting for the Hub 5 but does make total sense from a broader/technical perspective. With public testing of 2.2Gig I do also wonder how long before VM & other ISP's will add a 10GbE port on a Hub 6 or whatever. SFP+ port would be good but lets not get carried away

Daveoc64 27-09-2022 14:21

Re: Rollout of the HUB5

I too got the rejection email.

It would be nice to get the Hub 5. Not being able to get the full speed in modem mode with the Hub 4 is frustrating.

Re: Rollout of the HUB5

Well I have an Hub 4 and applied got no email confirming it also no order showing on my account and no rejection email. fingers crossed I fall through the net and get a decent hub. the hub 4 seems to have the wrong PSU with it to be honest. it is very loose. its not the connector on it self just it doesn't fit correctly.

I have took a chance too. The WIFI 6 should make a difference in VR with the Meta Quest able to take advantage of it.

I’ve just got the email cancelling me order… I suspect it’s due to the useless Wi-Fi pod on my account that never worked. As the hub 4 I’ve had for about two years. Would have been nice to 2Gb Ethernet port to connect to my decent router.

Exactly I know over in the US Comcast and other cable companies let you buy your own cable modem.. I think the excuse virgin give is for support.

Most let you use your own its just they won't support it if something goes wrong. I currently have my Asus router setup with both Sky ultrafast and Virgin as the backup connection. out of contract with virgin so could leave at any stage will be once decent 5G speeds are available to me.

yeah when your choice is 1gig virgin or 80Mbps BT that aint gonna happen....it annoys the hell out of me that their premium users are treated like this and dumb mary with a 100Mbps connection who wouldnt know a 2.5gig port if it bit her on the arse gets the latest hub when she would easily use a hub3.....in my opinion VM are a disgrace of a company and the minute another gig provider moves into my area they won't see me for dust.....

Exactly they are doing it all wrong you'd think they would supply the latest most powerful equipment to power users who have the Gigabit broadband rather than people who probably don't need it as they do simple things like go on Facebook or do their shopping online.

No.

I was a 'selected by VM' early adopter who went from a Hub3 to a 5, and now onto a 4. (engineer had no 5's in his van as they didn't officially exist as an option at that time) I'm only on 200Mb anyway so no biggie and i use an extensive mesh system and leave it on modem mode anyway as VM wi-fi is so shockingly woesome.

The overall impression I had was it wasn't really fit for purpose at the time, and was being used as a beta tester as it died mysteriously at the 4 month mark that seems to bear out.

I'll care more about wi-fi 6 & 2.5 Gbp port when my broadband actually reaches those speeds (not anytime soon as I'm finding my 200 to be plenty fast enough with a family of 5 and some 60 odd smart connected devices (albeit no 4k ones yet)

Delivered, plugged in and working all inside of ten minutes - The commissioning process is certainly a lot cleaner than it used to be!

No need to text or call in, reboot multiple times etc. Colour me impressed.
Same crap GUI, but it is what it is :)

Cool to see a full 31(?) downstream and 5 upstream channels. That's new.
A fantastically wide spread in levels from +1.5 > 7.8 though. Who knows if that's to be expected or not! :D

The Hub itself weighs a lot more and seems better built. I could be wrong...
I'll give it a little stress testing, see how she performs.

The Hub itself weighs a lot more and seems better built. I could be wrong...
I'll give it a little stress testing, see how she performs.

Tom

Do they want the Hub3 returned?

Not sure about that spread of levels! I hope I don't have this issue.

I can't find it either, I guess it's not an important feature. Lol

There's a pamphlet saying you can post it back - 'In partnership with Yodel' - So I imagine they just facilitate VM's e-waste. I'm more than happy to get rid of it, though!

Dimensions for the Hub5 are: 19*24*4.5cm vs 16*22*4.5cm on the Hub3 - so a big beast. But the Hub3 has that stupid wedge shape.
Luckily the 5 is completely flat, so you can actually lay it down somewhere.

Interestingly, the 2.5G port doesn't function as 2.5G in router-mode. I have yet to test in modem-mode. Not an issue for me, just strange...

The Hub5 box has a bit to remove if returning a Hub3 - so it should fit in.

I was looking at the Hub5 with the 2.5 port as I use my own router which is currently limited by the Hub4 to 940M - but I keep the Hub4 in router mode to connect just VM kit as the 360s seem to have a problem using my own Netgear router. So if the 2.5G port doesn't work then not much point.

I would suggest that it only initialises 2.5G in modem-mode - Although admittedly that's rather unusual. I'll confirm when I switch modes. I've seen others report it working fine, so assume it's ok.

The BQM seems pleasantly steady (ignore the spike, that was me stressing it).

Considering it's in router mode, it certainly suggests that the processor's not being used as heavily as on the previous Hub.

Hubs installed thought everything was ok BUT im getting QPSK modulation for all 4 upsteams and its saying RANGED rather than LOCKED......

Not sure what to do maybe i need to turn it off again or it needs to settle, what do others have?

edit

Rebooting the Hub5 has given me QAM64 on channels 0-3 for Upstream but it's still showing as Ranged rather than locked, is this anything to worry about?

SirThomas 11-10-2022 16:44

Re: Rollout of the HUB5

On a transmit carrier it'll lock on (ranging) and then be 'ranged' once complete - Looks like different terminology on these modems. Nout to worry about it would seem :)

Cheers, I've got a nice new WiFi 6 icons on atleast 3 devices now and 31 downstream channels.

Only 4 upstreams still for me but my channel spread hasn't changed, its still -1.2 to 2.9.

Glad you don't miss out on the new brick. :D

Very easy to install, literally just plug it in and eventually you will get a text message saying it's activated then use same box to ship Hub3 back in, will sort that when I can be arsed.

How long was you offline? or did it just work soon as it synced?

It took around 10mins to sync and the white led on the corner of the hub to stop flashing after that I was online and then got the text saying it's activated.

I then did a manual reboot as all my 4 upstreams showed as QPSK and that returned them to QAM64. Don't get worried when it says RANGED rather than LOCKED though.

It'll want you to change passwords for logging into the Hub if I remember and I kept the other WiFi passwords the same for my network as Hub 3.

You will notice a new WiFi 6 icon on the devices that have that.

I will have to do a fair bit of messing. I will have to test it all out and decide if I am still going to use my Mesh system for most the wifi. The router mainly will benefit my PC VR with the Meta Quest 2 using Air link which is capable of WiFi 6 and tbh the only reason I wanted this

Re: Rollout of the HUB5

WiFi range was never an issue in my house as router was never more than 15 foot or so away from a device, not tested it's range outside though.

My tablet had lost it's WiFi connection during my work day though, turning WiFi off and on, on the tablet sorted that.

The Hub5 is huge compared to 3.

I tempted fate with this trying to get a new hub 5... my hub 4 died and I rang in and was able to get a replacement ordered, then tried again with order form on the website, seems like I'm getting a hub 5 now on the 24th according to my account.

Hello, I’m new here, but been lurking for a while. Followed the link on this thread and my Hub 5 arrived today. I’ve got it running in modem mode attached to an Asus XT8 mesh system via the 2.5 gig ports. This is the result of running a speed test from the Asus software.

got my email yesterday for the hub 5 upgrade, its coming on the 25th this month.

Also had a reminder email yesterday stating "Just a quick reminder that we’re carrying out essential works to improve our network on Fri 14 Oct, which might interrupt your services."

Maybe the essential works they're carrying out is for more upstream channels.

ive had 4 of those over the last 5 weeks still no updated upload, the only thing ive noticed each time is about half hours downtime with no actual differences in service lol

Re: Rollout of the HUB5

I had the Hub 5 earlier in the trials and had such a terrible experience (very unstable connection with Hub 5, it seemingly did not like something about the network segment at the time, losing and then regaining the OFDM channel and errors relating to Docsis 3.1 were filling the log while no sites would load each time it happened) I had to get them to give me a Hub 3 again.

I requested the Hub 5 again through the link posted here as I felt confident seeing others thoughts on it lately. It arrived the other day, it does appear that all of the issues I was having with it have now been fully resolved, the connection has been rock solid.

When's your Hub coming?

Yodel seems to have improved for me, I left a note on the door saying please leave with neighbour if I'm not in and they did, you also get alot of control with their app.

Yodel isn't actually bad, I've never really had issues with them, Hermes/Evri on the other hand I actually refuse to do any online shopping with any retailer who uses them as your item will never turn up or get damaged.

So i checked the HUB3 downstream and upstream channels. I still have 24 downstream channels but now have 5 upstream channels...I'm guessing when i get my HUB5 ill have 32 downstream channels and 5 upstream channels.
