About to redo one of the en suites in the house. Fairly small room W2100mm x D1700mm x H2500mm


I'm looking at this for ventilation and also lighting

Wondering if it will give enough light for room dimensions. Anyone used one before ?

A relative has something similar, if it's like theirs, it won't be bright enough to light the whole bathroom. Also, the one that they have got is somehow powered by the flow of water, so wouldn't be of any use when using the bathroom and not the shower.

You could try giving somewhere like B&Q a call to ask?

We have one similar in our bathroom - I don't think it gives very much light out at all. Even in a small room I think you'd be hard pressed to only have that.

A 3 watt led is very dim, around 300 lumens.

5000 lumens is average for a 250sq ft room, and that's about eight 10 watt led's (although some of the new COB lamps are brighter, especially daylight spectrum).

Led tubes can be a better option.

But in a wet room or bathroom, new regs mean you can be restricted to 12v not mains.

Our 2mx 2m bathroom is lit by a single 15w (100 equiv) 1500 lumen daylight led bulb in a watertight ceiling globe.

Do familiarise yourself with the classes of luminair that are permitted in various areas in a bathroom. The regulations are quite onerous and rightly so. Water and electricity make poor bedfellows.

A friend had a fairly small bathroom done, and there were 4 LED fittings, the extractor one over the shower and 3 others forming a square with it.

Yep, this is what i've ended up going with. Only another £21 for three IP65 zone 1&2 rated LED downlighters

This can be expensive but worth looking into.

Get phillips Hue bulbs.

You might need the expensive coloured lights in the Livingroom, diningroom and Bedrooms.

other rooms like bathrooms you could have coloured ot ambient white lights.

Hallways and kitchens and sheds just get whit lights which are dimmable.

The biggest pain is assigning each light a unique name.

For example I have this set up

Livingroom - Tom, Dick & Harry (coloured)

My room - Alpha, Bravo, Charlie & Delta (coloured)

Shed - Freezer (white)

Hall - Up, Down (white)

Kitchen - Salt (coloured stip light), Tetley, Coffee, Milk & Sugar (white)

All are voiced controlled through Alexa an app.

I use light switches for all my lights, works a treat!;):D

I do like this idea but it will get very expensive !!! There's 10 GU10 in the kitchen alone and a further 10 in the ground floor hallway !! Price needs to drop somewhat

Yeah I have 4 GU10s colour in my room at £50 a pop, and 5 GU10s in the kitchen at £25 a pop.

Yes they are expensive, but they will last a long time, so work out cheaper.

Hue bulbs are so expensive - even when they are on special.

I have quite a few from my old house B22/E27 style - which now I can't use in my (not so) new house as it's all GU10 & GU5.3 all over the place...I'd like smart bulbs but we have so many of them that it's prohibitive to actually replace them with their smart counterparts.
In our downstairs hallway alone, there's 10 GU5.3 bulbs - Osram do a smart version @ £127 for 4... so that's the best part of £400 just for the hall way.
I've just done a count, I've got around 30 GU 5.3s in the house - so that would be over £900 just on the bulbs for them - it just makes it impracticable to do

I'm veering towards smart switches for the lights instead - I won't get the fine grained control over the lights, or be able to dim them, but I'll be able to have them on a schedule so they turn on/off when I'm not here, which is really what I want
