Lost in Space Season 1

Costume Departement Fun Facts

The spacesuits for Lost in Space were built at FBFX Studios in London, which is the same company that built the spacesuit for the 2015 feature film, The Martian.

The spacesuits have 9 different fabrics and feature sublimation printing on neoprene, as well as lycra, leather, nylon and metal components.

The spacesuit gloves were custom made by a glove maker in the UK at a cost of 950 GBP per pair.

John Robinson’s expedition jacket (worn by Toby Stephens) was made out of 59 pattern pieces – more than any other garment used in the series.

Some of the fabrics used in the building of the costumes were flown in from as far away as Japan, Germany, and the UK.

The spacesuits took 2 months to design and much longer to build!

Academy Award-winning Costume Designer Angus Strathie illustrates his own designs and deals directly with his costume cutters as to the line of each garment, built specifically under his direction.

When the spacesuit helmets are placed on the actors’ heads, no sound can penetrate the visor and the helmet. In order for the director, crew and cast to communicate, the sound department rigged up a headset that inserts into the hood worn under the helmet (called a “Snoopy Hood”).

There is a functioning fan in the backpack of the spacesuit that circulates air through the visor area to stop the visor from fogging up.

The spacesuits can get very warm, especially under the lights on set. The under layers to the spacesuits are called “Cool Suits” and are made with underwear fabric and tubing that allows the actors to plug into a circulating pump, running cool water through the suits.

The Cool Suits are applied to both a set of long johns and a top layer. The top of the suits were made in-house in Vancouver, then sent to a company in the US to have the tubing applied before being sent back to Vancouver for shooting.
The money Netflix have spent on these suits alone augers well for for the series!

I know I'm looking forward to it.

Hopefully it will live up to the hype Pip.

Re: Lost In Space

thanks for the info Pip. I love stuff like this, if you have got a production company which is willing to pay for it and a team of people who care so much about the fine details and want to do the best they can then you know you are going to get an amazing series. I keep going on about my "realism factor" and it is stuff like this I am talking about. I am sure they could have knocked up some cheapo naff £10 gloves thinking nobody is going to care and the audience will be dazzled with all the special effects but they have chosen to do things properly so every detail is realistic and you can believe it is all happening.

For those interested here's a review from Tom Gardiner who like myself and General Maximus loves quality SciFi. He's also lucky enough to have a critics pass to preview a lot of SciFi progs.

I'd love one too!

Fun fact. He lost his SYFY pass for criticizing them for cancelling Dark Matter.

I can';t wait for this.

It didn't have a thread but had been mentioned in the Scifi thread and also one of the TV threads I think.

Yep Stephen, it didn't have it's own thread but if the hype is anything to go by I'm sure you'll agree it deserves it.

Not too long before we find out.

Will the whole season be available straight away to binge watch?

Re: Lost In Space

What an excellent question. I was preparing myself for one episode a week. I have just checked and they are going to be dumped all in one go for a binge watch. It is going to be good in a way because when we watch it and think how amazing it is, we won't have to wait weeks on end to see what happens. At the same time though I like things to be spread out because I don't want them to end. I have the same dilemma with GoT. Every year I say how much I would love to have the whole season to watch in one go because it kills me waiting every week but at the same time I complain when it is all over and done with, how quickly it went by and I want more. From the look and feel of the trailer Lost in Space is going to have the same serious tone and quality deep story of series like BSG and the icing on the cake is that with it being made "available" on a Friday, you can play an Saturday or Sunday of fine tv, wine, pizza, doritos etc.

As its a Netflix created show it should be the full season at once.
