VM policy on giving info to the police.
Does anyone know the VM policy regarding what type of information is passed to the police once they are in possession of the IP details?
I assume that VM will pass on the name & address as a minimum, but what about other info such as logs etc? (Data can be legally passed on under the GDPR if it is to be used for the prevention or detection of crime or to aid in the apprehension or prosecution of offenders). Thanks. |

Anything covered under GDPR or a warrant. What are you bothered about?

If the Police have a warrent then they can have any and all info they require.

Do you know if VM will require a warrant before they disclose any further information, or if they are likely to accept the clause in the GDPR that allows them to disclose information about the relevant customer? I know that the information needed will eventually be provided, i'm just wondering whether VM will play ball or not. |

They will have to if the Police request certain info for an investigation.
They will likely have a Police loading team that handle those sort of requests. I know the company I work for does. |
Re: VM policy on giving info to the police.
I can neither confirm nor deny that I work for an ISP myself, but most requests come from counter terrorism command and is an official demand to provide timings, IPs and from which IP for confirmation (as these can float about from user to user). Obviously they also want to know the account details and addresses, also.
Only ever seen a few UK-based cases, mind. T'is normally stuff from abroad. Of course, most of this logging data is not especially helpful. Deep packet inspection (live or relayed) is always available, should it be required by the more menacing police services. Tom |
