VPN how much ?

Looking at a new security package , it's offering 300meg a day VPN ,have no idea what that adds up to. In unlimited at the moment . Simple language please :dunce:

Well it is very restricted that imo. What is this package?

I use a company called Windscribe as it allows you to make your own package. I pay $1 for unlimited bandwidth and $1 for USA server which unlocks US Netflix and so on so $2 a month. You get UK servers unlocked and a few others free

yours is 9GB a month if it means 300meg bandwidth Windscribe do 20GB accounts for free

Sorry it is 10GB now free but I do think there are ways of getting more

EXPAND20 this code allegedly gets you extra

It adds up to nothing, dont touch it.

VPN's do not give you any security. They can give you some privacy and other benefits though.

300mb is a very low limit and would be reached easily even with just browsing for a while, let alone watching a small video on a site.

I generally advise people to stay away from ultra cheap or free VPNS because logging and selling your surfing habits and other data that goes through them is often how they make their money.

Thank you it was just part of the package just wondered what it gave me . Have stand alone vpn ( unlimited )and separate security at the moment . Which I am quite happy with . Ie no problems for the last year. ;)

Incidently, Proton who do Proton mail/Calendar and VPN are now offering a package where you get everything for about a tenner a month. Cheaper if you pay yearly or bi yearly.

Gives you unlimited VPN on 10 devices, 15 email addresses/encrypted mailboxes, you can use their servers to do mails for 3 of your own domains and a few other things.

All their apps on android/linux/windows are open source and they have had external security audits done etc.

Something like Mullvad VPN is almost a fiver a month so its not much more for Proton with all the bells and whistles and you don't have the likes of google looking at all your mails to profile you for ads and other stuff.

Just putting it out there as a decent option since their complete package only just got released.

I like Proton's free option. Free is a price I like and works fine even for steaming football games.

Used their free email and other stuff for a while but I always have had some paid VPN to use beside ones I setup myself. Current subscription was ending so thought I would try ProtonVPN out and its actually really good.

Speeds are great even when using their CORE network across multiple countries even though I'm already bouncing through other boxes in other countries before I hit ProtonVPNs network anyway. Connections are super fast too.

They have done a lot of optimisations that other companies have not done or don't have the expertise to do. They have made OpenVPN multithreaded, do some latency tricks with shorter paths and tricks on their servers to move traffic around in a better way to avoid CPU bottlenecks and other stuff. All interesting stuff!

Even though their code is open source and audited it wouldn't surprise me if some time in the future a flaw is found in some of these optimisations like a race condition between threads leading to leakage or something but most people don't have a threat model that would make them be worried about such a thing.

If you are interested in VPN stuff, their accelerator information page is a short and not very detailed explanation of some of the stuff they do but worth a butchers.

Norton Premium is 10 devices and includes VPN and often Amazon will be less than £20 per year. You can set up the VPN to only come on for insecure networks.
I can make no comment on speed, reliability, loading etc, just its availability. It does what I need it to do.

My understanding which is very limited is you get what you pay or don't in this case :erm:

Depends what you need it for. Free Proton is worth trying if your needs are limited. Doubtless the paid for ones give more options.

As I say I was surprised it was good enough for streaming footy and I don't need a vpn for anything else.

'You get what you pay for' is often quoted by those that have paid too much for something !

If you are not paying with money for a service online, you are usually paying for it with your data and free/very cheap VPNs usually fall under this banner.

ProtonVPN is one of the rare exceptions. Their model is akin to giving away free cheese and wine samples in supermarkets for people to try, knowing that some will go ahead and buy after they like the sample, making more than they lose even if others always consume their future samples but never buy.

Some security software and browser 'VPN's use other well known VPN providers to provide their service so knowing what logs are kept can be a minefield unless you can follow the trail and they have done audits etc. Probably not a problem for most. Some block certain protocols or are limited in speed and other ways.

As tweetiepooh said, you only need the VPN to do what you need it to do. If you would like other features you don't actually need, the choice is there. If you are techie enough you can run your own on a VPS for literally a couple of quid a month too.

Although the legality and morality could be debated, I scan websites I want to sign up with for vulnerabilities/what they are running etc so I can decide if I will sign up and how much trust I might put in to say what I put in a private message on the site. Same with sites I want to buy from. Just knowing a site is using certain webcart/basket systems will make me avoid them. Its second nature and I do it knowing that my isp can't see it, the police couldn't see it and the site would not know the source of it because I wouldn't use the same IP/traceable VPN provider (without going in to too many details). Its nice knowing I can do that but I wouldn't just do that with any random VPN provider.
