Didn't actually have my own until I got married and the PC/Windows is just too complex now. Most coding I did was in DOS so text mode, even for work it's scripting etc and essentially text based.

So how did you learn? BBC Micro wasn't my first computer experience (we had a PDP8 at school, which did Basic), but it was where I learned how to do assembler, which set me up for life.

Which mainframes did you use? I worked for ICL before I joined NTL, and am a dab hand at SFL (ICL mainframe assembler). A skill I don't get to use any more, sadly.

I spent meny years writing COBOL for mainframes, at both BT and CCN (now Experian).

They were IBM mainframes (BT ran a lot of CICS systems) we ran batch programs on the databases using COBOL.

After I left the RAF, I went on a TOPS course on Computer Programming, then got my first job in Idle at a Textile Mill, using Mainframe Assembler on a Univac 90/30, then moved on to jobs using RPG2/3 on Honeywell DPS6, IBM S/36 & S38, then moved into Business Analysis/Project Management, Team & Departmental Management, so didn’t code much (except for SQL when I was working with Telecom & Cable Billing systems).
