Slow torrents
Why is it that VM's torrent speed is so slow?
Im downloading the same torrent from 2 connections 1 from a vm 20mb connect and the other from be* unlimited 24mb package with connection speed of 13mb. Why is the vm torrent downloading at 10kbps and the Be* torrent downloading at 1mb ? I've capped upload speed at 10kbs. Im directly connected to the modem with no firewall interferance. also when downloading torrents on vm, it makes the browser go really slow and pings go hihg up, this doesnt occur with Be* can anyone answer me please? |
Re: Slow torrents
Traffic shaping probably.

Re: Slow torrents
I havn't downloaded anything today and speed test is giving a steady 19mb
Even if it was trafic shaping, I would still recieve 10mb, no ? and that would give me well over 10kbps download on torrents |
Re: Slow torrents
Certain types of traffic can be limited so I wouldnt be surprised if this was the case. On the other hand you could just be connected to diffrent seeds on the VM side which arent uploading as fast.

So that the one that's currently performing really well on Be is connected to VM, and vice versa. Because I'd guess that's where the problem lies. Alternatively you could double-check all your torrent client's settings, reboot your computer and cable modem, then check all Window's network parameters for that connection... At around midnight I was downloading a torrent with two seeds and a fellow peer on my 4Mb VM connection at a consistent speed of 2.9Mb/s. To my knowledge, VM don't throttle torrents at all. Quote:

Have a read about how to "Hack the max half-open TCP connections"? If you're not already using the uTorrent client, I'd recommend you give it a go. It has it's own connection optimiser built-in that'll test your speed and suggest optimum settings. Feel free to post any specific questions you have back here and I'll try to answer them. :juggle: |
Re: Slow torrents
I have swapped the computers over and had the same results and im already using utorrent and yes the max connections has been hacked already :) I've put it to 80% upload speed and i am getting a slight increase in speed but put it this way, upload is going faster than the download speed

Re: Slow torrents
start using newsgroups you will get max 2.4mbps everytime, if not be happy with your be connection.

Re: Slow torrents
Don't always rely on torrent speeds, you won't always get close to your speeds.

Re: Slow torrents
For 20mb you've set your upload speed to low, try uTorrent and set it at about 75kbs. Also untick
-Enable DHT Network -Enable DHT Network for new torrents -Enable Peer Exchange in preferences. Oh and don't download Virgin during 4pm-9pm. Torrents take up to an hour to gain full speed so have patience. Make sure you have a static IP, and ports are forwarded properly. Use private trackers instead of public ones like mininova and tpb to get better speeds. That's about it for speeds on torrents. |
Re: Slow torrents
Also you maybe downloading the same torrent all depends on the users ur connected to as the be connection has got a good swarm with good upload from other the vm connection is in a crap swarm with bad upload speeds from other users

Drop me a PM with the torrent's details and where you obtained it? |
Re: Slow torrents
It appears that VM are not retarding Bittorrent. I too cannot get more than 10k/sec up, and it's 2pm and I have not downloaded more than a few tens of megabytes today so it can't be traffic throttling.
I've just completed scans with Ad-Aware, Spybot, AVG, AntiVir, Clamwin, Bitdefender and Kaspersky and they call came up clean. It's not a virus/spyware. I would call VM tech support but I'm not paying 25p/min to do it, so I might call retentions instead and just tell them I need a bigger discount until it's fixed. |

On my PC I know torrents don't go above 10 on there, but my laptop gets decent speeds and they both on same network and no virus' or spyware on any. It might be something to do with your PC if downloads are going pretty crap on torrents. |
