No and i've also switched off my firewall for the online test.

Re: [Merged] BB Speed Upgrades

Quite. So to reiterate what I said - South Manchester and parts of Herts/Beds were tested last week to see if our procedures worked, we got together and discussed how things went. Hence no upgrades since then.

It's all a lot simpler than some people are making out. Taking rumours as facts and what people guess goes on at ntl is a good recipe for getting in a muddle.

Re: [Merged] BB Speed Upgrades

Quite. I'm expecting my BB supplier to supply me with what i'm paying for, not to slow me down while they 'upgrade'.

I would say that your problem is unrelated to the upgrade. Have you tried rebooting pc and BB connection?

To be fair - there could be a number of factors which is causing your broadband connection to slow down. As BBKing is saying no further upgrades have occured since the trial that they ran middle of last week, so I do not think you can blame the upgrades on your slow connection.

printerman 01-08-2004 20:28

Re: [Merged] BB Speed Upgrades

Hang on....if i download a test file using mIRC its running at about 18KB/sec...Thats about right isn't it...?

Kliro 01-08-2004 20:34

Re: [Merged] BB Speed Upgrades

Well you wouldnt get that speed with the results you got from the test, I think thats normal speed for 150k

printerman 01-08-2004 20:35

Re: [Merged] BB Speed Upgrades

Yeah thats what i though, 150k / 8 = 18.75. Looks about right....i'll run that test again later i think.!

No, I think you'll find thats about right for 1mb. Run the test a few times (use the link on the page, not the refresh/reload button on your browser) to be sure.

I run an SNMP monitoring program so i just check each morning how long my cable modem's been "up" ;)

If its less than 10 hours, it means it's been rebooted in the night :p

Re: [Merged] BB Speed Upgrades

Like BBKing has said numerous times, the extra "t" stands for temp, and is being used until the speed upgrades happen....

ian@huth 01-08-2004 23:49

Re: [Merged] BB Speed Upgrades

I would imagine that all current configuration files have been renamed to have a "t" for temporary at the beginning of the filename. When you are upgraded the new filename will be the same as it used to be and replace the temporary filename.

The burst's you see are just Internet Explorer's timer starting as soon as you save the file with a name. By that time, its already downloaded Z amount of data, and hence its transfer rates are a little skewy at the start.

Try DU-Meter for windows , or set up an MRTG under linux if your really that bored :-p It'll give a much more accurate representation of what's really coming out of your cable modem. Im finding its between 182-186Kbytes from a good source, Newshosting.

I doubt so. When/If Telewest merge, I'd imagine their portfolio of products maybe unified, in which case 'maybe' 3Mbit to NTL areas too. I did leave out something - NTL allows down + upgrades to your cable line, which is great when im away.

Unfortunately you cant just turn the damn thing off, nor will (I'm presuming highly here...) dragging your cable modem across the country and slapping it into another NTL cable UBR means it'll get authenticated. If only that would happen .....

Just a quick Thanks to the peeps of NTL who made it happen.

I'm sure there are a few happy punters now with the upgrade, myself included.

Cheers

Already have, why am I the one defending NTL over the last few days about this upgrade, (by my standards anyway) and then find out my area didnt get done yesterday, its not like its a bad area, far from it.

Anyone here know how much of the country got done yesterday? Is this fear that Im going to wait until the 12th of Never unfounded....:(

Successful overnight upgrade here in Norwich to 750. The process seems to have been a technical success (well done techies), but oh what a failure in customer communication. Just think how much customer gratitude and positive publicity could have been generated if only NTL had handled this aspect with more competence.

Just a bit, this upgrade wasnt even listed on the service status page, let alone advertised, so I havent got a clue whether my speed is supposed to be upgraded, or not, well done to the techies for doing a good job (Only not here :'( ) But where the hell is the PR, NTL , FOR GOD SAKE, talk to your customers, this is pathetic, at least acknoledge this upgrade, at least tell us where is being done, and where is having trouble, not his guessing game we have now, if only I could get ADSL, i would be off in a shot. (If not for the speed, NTL here have been fine for that, but at least go to an ISP that talks to their customers, there has to be better than this out there)

only they havent, NTL have done what people HERE have told us, not them, and thats the point, they havent acknoledged that they were upgrading now, and now Im in the lurch cause I havent been upgraded, I shouldnt have to (And havent got the time to) wait on hold to NTL TS to ask why my area hasnt been upgraded, and probably just to get a dodgy response, NTL, please, just throw me a ball here, please?

They? NTL? where? Point proved, if ntl actually informed of what areas are being done and when, I wouldnt need to be so annoyed, but they havent, its so easy to hide behind that defence, but as NTL hasnt released ANY information about this upgrade, what else can I do, all that NTL needed to do is put on their status page "On 2nd august we will be upgrading the following areas, bla bla, .... " and I at least I would have known.
On a subnote, anyone get commincated to from NTL in any form before this? (As stated in the press release back in April?)

Re: [Merged] BB Speed Upgrades

Im not at home but matrix has eased my fear's, have to agree with the earlier post those who havent had the upgrade need to be given an estimated date and ntl need to inform all their customers whats going on else their could be hundreds of thousands with unrebooted modem's getting no upgrade.

Upgraded!

St Neots, Cambs. Everything working fine here.

To see if you have been upgraded, check the Cable Modem itself.

To do this:

http://192.168.100.1 User: root , Pass: root

Click "Operation Configuration"

in the box you'll see some settings, if you were on NTL's 1MB (like me) and you think you've been upgraded you should see this:

Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 1536000 bps Maximum Upstream Data Rate : 256000 bps

:D

(oops, I said STB and I ment Modem, sorry for any confussion.)

And to whoever posted the postcode tracker link thing, i get:

When is the speed upgrade happening in my area?

Your service is due to be upgraded during the month of October.

It doesn't appear to be very accurate! :/
