Does it taste better than Sarsons? if it does then you clearly have a better deal than I got.

If anything it is lacking in acidity & relies too much on being 'young and fruity' - but that is being picky ;)

I shall definitely visit Aldi next week and subscribe to this box theory ;)

ASDA also had a Cotes du Rhone Villages as one of the featured grapes this week, sorry I didn't get that one instead because I like a bit of that if it's decent (hasn't been recently though).

isn't Cotes du Rhone a region, not a grape? - possibly a Grenarche?

- I tend to like any 'Cabernet Sauvingnon' or 'Merlot' varietals - especially 'new world' produced wines from Australia, South Africa or Chile :)

Yes it is indeed but in this house and my circle of friends we refer to wine in general as "grape" :) I do prefer the new world wines myself but lately a lot of what's on offer from the new world in the big supermarkets isn't really up to much - had some Aus and NZ wines from 06/07 which have been really poor but Chile is usually a consistently good bet. Some of the Tempranillos from Spain have been really good though (watch it with the Riojas posing as reserva or gran reserva under a tenner though, they're usually naff). Even some of the Gallo stuff from California has been decent lately.

I'm due to visit Spain in a couple of weeks - last time I was there I admit to buying 1L tetrapaks for around 1€ a go - but I hope to try your suggestion for something a little more challenging - thanks :)

damn, I just finished my Christmas bottle of Tequila ...

Having some Banrock Station Cabernet/Shiraz. Just recovering from flu so it doesn't taste as expected. Either the taste buds are still a bit ropey or it could be just the really naff 2007 vintage.

...wonders if Gaz has been to Aldi this weekend ;)

actually, no - but that was because I have been in Spain for a few days, where they still do 1 Litre packs of 'wine' for less than 1€ - I cheated & got 3x200ml of a tempranillo/cabernet sauvignon blend for 97¢...

- however Mrs Gaz did go on Thursday and made sure I won't 'go short' this weekend ;)

- well a 250ml glass of wine cost me £5.29 in a Premier Inn, recently, so there is still some slack available ...

- the scarey thing was asking for a brandy after a meal in a Barcelona restaurant & getting what seemed like half a bottle poured into a HUGE balloon glass - exchange rates still can't cope with that kind of thing

To be honest, I couldn't say. The Amstel brewery was bought by Heineken 40 years ago. They kept Amstel as a B-brand for a while, but I think Heineken stopped brewing Amstel a long time ago. Apparently, they've resurrected the brand (I was surprised to see advertising for it). I couldn't comment on the taste. :)

Mal 31-01-2009 23:52

You've been able to get Amstel around here, on and off, for years now.

Strangely, I looked at that page earlier, when I saw Heineken on the label.

Ah, it was well-known in Holland up to the 70s, but I think it left the shelves in the early 80s. I was quite surprised to see it sponsoring Sports events lately. Apparently, Heineken kept the brand alive outside Holland.

I'm just starting to cook Sunday lunch and opened a bottle of Californian juicyred from Asda to add to the gravy, couldn't resist a glass and it's beautiful.

I got it a few weeks ago on a 2 for 1 offer and only paid £3.68. I don't know much about wine or grape varieties but this is really smooth and plummy and , ... I'm just going to have to have another glass to see if i was only imagining how nice the first glass full was. :D

The Tesco stuff is only 12.5%, but doesn't have that 'thin & acid' character - neither is it too 'fruity' - it is going down quite well ;)

Y'know, I tried this stuff last year (it was the 2006 vintage then) and it was rubbish then but I thought I'd give this one another chance seeing as it's one of the featured wines this week but it's just as bad. Rather than a sign of quality, I think the featured wine thing has now become a platform to shift stuff of questionable quality which they have too much of.

They even have the cheek to put a sticker proclaiming "2007 historic vintage" on the neck, which it wasn't of course so that should have been enough warning. My own fault I guess.

I always wonder whether the retailers buyers check what is delivered, compared to what they chose for the promotion??
