France to loan Britain the Bayeux Tapestry

The Bayeux Tapestry is set to be displayed in the UK after France agreed it could leave its shores for the first time in 950 years, the BBC understands.

French President Emmanuel Macron is expected to announce the loan during his visit to the UK on Thursday.
Classy move. :tu:

Maybe we should hang onto it:

It is likely that it was commissioned by Bishop Odo, William's half-brother, and made in England—not Bayeux—in the 1070s

I've seen it, and it's impressive, but will the rude bits be censored over here?

There's already a copy (made in 1885 by ladies from Staffordshire).

Not sure we want to set a precedent that works should repatriated to their country of origin. :erm::D

So true. We'd otherwise have to return the royal family to Germany and Greece and return a Scottish King to the throne of England.

I don't trust M. Macron, he is too clever by half. Everyone named Harold should keep a close eye on this...

Celts are also immigrants:

Quote:

In the course of the first millennium BC, immigration from continental Europe resulted in the establishment of Celtic languages in the islands, eventually giving rise to the Insular Celtic group. What languages were spoken in the islands before is unknown, though they are assumed to have been Pre-Indo-European.

Where is it actually going on display ?

I spent hours in the British Museum, there must have been a group of about 50 people around The Rosetta Stone (Which the Egyptians are said to want back but we have had it since 1802), was very difficult to get near it up close.

Don't know yet. Apparently there will be bun fight for it:

Huw Merriman, a Conservative, asks May to ensure the Bayeux Tapestry goes to Battle Abbey in his constituency.

May says Hastings, Amber Rudd’s constituency, also wants it. The government will look at where it can be seen by most people.

Re: France to loan Britain the Bayeux Tapestry

British Museum seems the logical place for most people to see it. Plus they probably are the best to handle it in terms of expertise and security. Hastings and Battle Abbey will be harder for those that live outside the area. That said another thing going to London might be politically difficult.
