Analogue radio switch-off
 

It's nearly ten years since analogue television was fully switched off, yet there is no talk of any analogue switch off for radio.

It could be argued that AM and FM will never be switched off and that we will have analogue and digital continuing to operate alongside each other for along time into the future.

Should we be working towards a switching off of AM and FM or can both formats happily live alongside each other indefinitely?

Just leave them imo, they're not taking up much room on band thingy

Good I hope they Dont.... I dont like how raw digital sounds,its harsh and sterile and doesnt sound good...... (Listening to XM radio in a car for example)

TV was relatively easy as TV's were mostly in homes and easy to add change "boxed". Radio is much harder. Older cars don't have DAB and harder to attach an extra, some don't have inputs so maybe you'd have DAB receiver that retransmits on FM for the radio. Also all the embedded FM receivers in some phones and portable devices.

I have a car with DAB. . . pretty much useless as it can't receive the station(s) that I'd listen to.

Not everyone lives in London ;)

Agreed.

And there are many more radios in circulation - I recall reading a while back that there are more than 300 million radios in use in the UK as almost all households have several radios and I'm sure that's still the case.

The AM/FM radio in my car is integrated with the centre console and other functions so replacing it is not an option.

As tweetiepooh mentioned above, there are DAB car convertors/adaptors that rebroadcast the DAB signal as an FM signal within your car that you set your analogue radio to the frequency of. https://www.halfords.com/technology/.../dab-adaptors/

You can use similar retransmitters, without the DAB tuner, to play MP3 players (or anything with a Line Out) via your old car radio. Other work via Bluetooth.

The small FM devices don't always work that well though especially if driving around where local use of FM can change. Then there is keeping power to the transmitter and to the source. Still it does work and I did use it in older car before radio with USB port but as commented some are so integrated much harder to change but if you want to spend the money not impossible.
