Can anyone recommend a free IRC piece of software please?

Years ago which im sure it was free i used mIRC but now they want $20 after 30 days.

I recall using a multi-client called pidgin

I've never used IRC but This lists top 16 and considers the pros and cons. A number of them are free to the end user.

I like MIRC alot......... I once experimented with the oldest version i could get to connect and it was 3.5 ... Quite small and basic but works well!!

Where can i get good server lists from also for chat rooms?

Server lists, you could try irc.netsplit.de - and a decent client is HexChat.

As far as I know, HexChat still has a big server list in and when you are connected most IRC networks will allow you to grab a channel list by typing /LIST.
