To be fair, it's down the websites, not the EU.

The GDPR changes have been coming for years, as has how to comply. Most websites that don't now comply have taken an active decision not to do so.

If it helps you i can access it using Opera Browser: Fast and Secure on my Android phone without changing any settings on Virgin Media, maybe there is a desktop browser that does something similar?

Apparently, 2 years wasn’t enough to prepare for GDPR (unlike all the US sites that did).

What's was the specific issue as to why they are non-GDPR compliant. I thought GDPR was about personal data?

ip addresses, cookies on your PC, etc., are personal identifiers - most US sites give you the options to select whick cookies you want to allow, the others haven’t set up this capability.
