Italy elects its First Female leader, but..

Her party is the far right “Brothers of Italy”,

Quote:

Giorgia Meloni, leader of the far-right Brothers of Italy party, is widely expected to win the national elections on Sunday, and then form a coalition government including Silvio Berlusconi's Forza Italia party and Matteo Salvini's League party.

The 45-year-old would be the first female leader in Italy, a country far behind its European allies in gender parity, and the first far-right politician to become head of government in a major eurozone economy.

It would be an astonishing success for a politician long seen on the fringe and for a party that won just 4.3% of the vote at the last election in 2018.

Now, Brothers of Italy, which Ms Meloni founded 10 years ago, could win around 25% and become the country's largest party.

But the victory of a nationalist and eurosceptic in Italy would also raise fears in Europe, already grappling with the government of Viktor Orban's Fidesz in Hungary and the rise of Marine Le Pen's Rassemblement National in France, Vox in Spain, and Chega in Portugal.

Previous Reports have suggested that despite Meloni being heavily Eurosceptic, she had no desires to leave the EU, however, EU’s Ursula Von Der Leyen, last week issued a direct threat to Italy, saying EU “had tools”, if Italy voted in far right candidate, that went against EU democratic principles.

From the above linked Sky News article:

Still, Brothers of Italy retains the flag-flame logo associated with Fascists (it is reputed to mean that Fascism burns on), and its rank-and-file includes Mussolini sympathisers who are sometimes caught giving the stiff-arm salute, while some local officials have Mussolini memorabilia in their offices.

No matter how good or bad an Italian PM is, you'll know that they'll be in power for shorter than Boris Johnson.

The EU has tools, alright.

As for the Italian election result, anything that assists implosion of the EU is fine with me.

Jeez, I hope no one gets a chance to make such a catastrophic gamble.

It's actually boxed her in more.

Can't believe Truss has lead us into having higher government borrowing rates than Italy! Your Austrian friends must find it simultaneously worrying and amusing that the Conservative Party faithful managed to elect someone worse at the job than Johnson!

But can she crash an economy in two weeks?

We hold our collective breath.

A lot of people are saying she just did - in less than two weeks.

The Pound is recovering but it doesn't look like it'll soon get back to $1.14 (bad enough) where it was before the Kwarteng shit-show.

But sure - anything can happen in another week.
