It may be a good idea to start a new thead for this specific problem. Also add as much info as you can. Type of firewall if any, AV software. Are you on Broadband or dialup. there is almost always some activity on BB connections even if you are not using it for any reason. Does your PC display any other problems? Do you run Adware or spyware checkers? Is there anything showing up in Task Manager that is suspicious? jeffguo, if you post any further info in this thread you may get more replies. http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/sh...ad.php?t=15083 |

Re: Security and antivirus web links
I don't post here often, so I hope nobody minds me adding my input to this topic. :)
I'm sure some of you may be familiar with the strategy of blocking various ad/spyware/etc sites in the Hosts file, but the more experienced computer users are probably also aware of its limitations [if a site has stuff on various subdomains you have to have an entry for each subdomain]. DNSKong gives you a bit more flexibility on DNS-based site blocking. Although it doesn't offer wildcard functionality, in the sense of being able to replace characters with a *, it does let you put in just 1 [or more] "words" [I forget the correct term] of a url. For example, you could have an entry like spammysoftware & it would block anything like ads.spammysoftware.com, banners.spammysoftware.net etc, but wouldn't block banners.spammysoftware1.com. It's not ideal, but it's considerably better than the Hosts file method. A few things I should mention about it though:

Re: Security and antivirus web links
Comodo Internet Security has just reached Version 3.9.xxxxxx
The Hips has certainly become a great deal more user friendly with whitelisting and trusted vendors(digitally signed stuff) plus buffer overflow protection. Also the Anti-Virus has come on quite a lot with Heuristics and BOClean now integrated into it. Plus it`s free. http://personalfirewall.comodo.com/d..._firewall.html If you do give it a try, during install there is the option to install "Safesurf" for buffer overflow protection along with the "Ask" toolbar :td: just untick the three boxes (opt out) as it`s not needed now, BO protection is built into Defence+(the HIPS) |
Nice site to add to your favourites

Re: Security and antivirus web links
Comodo Time Machine, does the same sort of thing as Roll-Back Rx or Ay Recovery. I.e. Creates snapshots of your system which you can go back to if you delete something or install something you don`t like. Then your system is back to how it was when the snap-shot was taken.
Doesn`t work with RAID or even if you just have a RAID controller but don`t use it  Also has some issues with imaging software, messes with the mbr :( http://www.comodo.com/home/data-stor...a-recovery.php Forgot to say it`s free :tu: |
Re: Security and antivirus web links
Comodo Internet Security version 4 has recently been released, you can download a copy from here http://www.comodo.com/home/internet-....php?entryURL= just make sure to select Free Download where you will install a downloader. Here you can choose what to download.
Remember if installing to untick the opt-in box for Hopsurf (if you don`t want it). Has it improved and is it easier to use? Well yes it now has an integrated Sandbox which is not really a sandbox as most know it (sandboxie style) but anything it doesn`t recognize is given limited priveliges until it is allowed by the user or confirmed ok. The AV component is slowly getting better and this release is a lot more user friendly. The main gripe i have is the default setting (Internet security) allows all traffic out but blocks incoming. You need to change to Pro-active to stop this. You certainly get a lot less meaningless pop-ups :p: |
Re: Security and antivirus web links
Comodo Internet Security v5 has been released a few weeks, head on over to the forum if you wish to try it out. It certainly is a lot more user friendly :)
64+32Bit available... https://forums.comodo.com/news-annou...-t61661.0.html |
Re: Security and antivirus web links
You tell me if it is behaving?Because I had no end of trouble with the last update and had to go looking for a removal tool.
Mind I only run the firewall. |
Re: Security and antivirus web links
It certainly behaves fine for me, but i do have a pretty good knowledge of the product and use the full suite.
The only things i have seen is a couple of issues with Avasts webshield. Personally Maggy if you are just going to use the firewall, i.e. no Defence+ or Sandbox (which isn`t like sandboxie) then personally i think if your behind a router using vista or 7 then the standard firewall with a decent av should suffice if your a safe surfer. One thing i will say is this version went through a much better beta/RC testing process with a better bugzilla tracking formula. The sandbox part can take a bit of getting used to, it basically flags unknown/unsigned trusted vendors executables in a partially limited sandbox using job objects, if you know the software is safe you can easily move it to Trusted files. If you do decide to give it a go, i`ll try and help as much as possible if you have any issues... |

Re: Security and antivirus web links
I have used MSE for some time and find it does its job and just works away in the background with without all the annoying pop-ups and notices that some of my previous AVs have done in the past.

Re: Security and antivirus web links
Personally i use Avast av and Zonealarm firewall ( both free versions ) and dont have any problems and my system run's on Vista home premium.

No AV will catch 100%, some are better than others at catching new stuff, MSE does miss a lot of the newer malware! For a simple set and forget program it excels, with not many extra this and that`s to confuse you. ;) |

Open up the main Comodo window(Summary tab) and where it says FIREWALL on the main screen(not the tab) you can change the settings by clicking to the right of the word FIREWALL next to the green square then select Custom Policy with the slider. I have FIREWALL set to 'Custom Policy' and DEFENSE+ set to 'Safe Mode'. |
Re: Security and antivirus web links
Thank you, changed it to those options and I am getting the pop-ups I desire :)

Re: Security and antivirus web links
http://free.agnitum.com/index.php Agnitum Outpost Suite free, launched on monday - a few less features than the Pro version, but with a VB100 certified (well, decent rate of passes) antivirus and a firewall, it's a strong contender in the free security stakes.

EICAR test file is the safest way to check your AV is working ok on websites you visit: https://secure.eicar.org/eicar.com.txt
Should get blocked by your AV. |
Re: Security and antivirus web links
Nice to see my Norton Internet Security removed the EICAR download virtually instantaneously. What is in that thing!!!!! :D
At least i know my AV is working even if I do only have it installed as it came as a 60 day trial with my new laptop. Thanks for the link Qtx, bookmarked for future use when I decide which AV to use. :tu: |
Re: Security and antivirus web links
Blocked by MSE.
Good find, Qtx. |
Re: Security and antivirus web links
Avast didn't stop the download, but it detected it as a threat from a manual scan.
|
Re: Security and antivirus web links
Is this not the same test file that has been around for many years now? I remember references to it before 2000.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EICAR_test_file You can paste that line in to notepad and save it to get your av to test it too. If you like fiddling, you can do that and add/change a random letter in the file to see if the AV still detects it. Hackers (not really the term I would use) often use a cryptor to avoid AV's but many times they can just Hex-edit a single part of a virus to make it undetectable if they are lazy. |

Re: Security and antivirus web links
Its only a check to see if your AV is working as expected rather than testing how good it is. The fact its just a text file means it is safer than trying to test the AV with a newer real virus. If the EICAR text file doesnt get caught by your AV for whatever reason, nothing bad happens. If you tested with a real virus, you would get infected.
Probably not the best way of explaining it from my side either lol, but hopefully you get the drift too :D |
Re: Security and antivirus web links
I do indeedy get your drift Qtx. Thanks for taking the time to explain. :)
