Saw Spider-man 2 yesterday - absolutely fantastic. 10/10. Doc Ock was great and the fight scenes between him and Spidert-man were some of the best I've seen for a while.

But Doctor Octopus is probably the archetypal Spider-man villain - a good man turned bad by the accident in the lab and, let's be honest, how cool was it when he's climbing buildings and stuff?

Also, Peter Parker being a neurotic mess is part of the appeal of Spider-man - he had this thrust on him and, as a result, his life started to fall apart as he tried to keep his secret and help people. I thought that the way they handled his 'unmasking' in the film was fantastic.

I thought spideys equal was another person who had gone through the same mutation as he has, can't remember the name, I want to say Venom but I dont know if thats right.
Now if the person I am thinking of doesnt appear in any of the future movies then you are right, Dr Oc is the closest to his equal.
Oh and he was very cool climbing those buildings, reminded me of a Squidy (Sentinal) from Matrix.

The scene on the train when all the passengers are looking down on him almost brought a tear to my eye, very emotional scene, though im not sure exactly what it was about it that I think made it so good.

Depending on which comics / stories you've read, Venom is an alien symbiote that infects JJ Jamesons (sp?) son, John (the astronaut who MJ was engaged to). As as result, he has much the same powers as Spidey but has a really funky black costume (which is actually the symbiote). He's supposed to be a bit stronger than Spidey, but it would be a great match up.

Romour control has it that Venom will be the villain in one of the later films (and would give a more plausible reason for John being in Spidey 2, other than just to get dumped :D ). The other rumour is that the Lizard will appear, fuelled by the appearance of Dr Connors in the film.

Hmm.. I thought in the comics JJ Jamesons son was Man-Wolf - he bought back some rock from the moon with him that did it - and Venom was Eddie Brock (who got mentioned in the first film as well) - after the symbiote that Spiderman bought back after being on the 'Beyonders world' (I can't remember what the comic series was called), left him and bonded with Eddie.

Personally I reckon for the third film, it will be Lizard, and Hobgoblin (which is essentially Green Goblin with a different colour outfit).

Saw it on Sunday, thought it as quite a good film, quite entertaining... I just hate the way they have to kill off the villians...

I've heard that too. Good villain...although I've seen opinions where people say that having an alien symbiote could seem a little unbelievable in Spidey's movie "universe", compared to the "scientist becomes villain after experiment gone wrong" types we've had so far.

I do think it could work, though. And Sam Raimi certainly knows how to handle Spider-Man & his world.

But if number 3 has Venom, then I guess it'll have two villains in it...going by the end of Spider-Man 2.

Also...speaking of Venom...wasn't there another alien symbiote villain? Carnage?

I liked Daredevil. No where near as much as Spidey 1 & 2, or X-Men 2, but I did find it enjoyable. I think the best thing about it (after Elektra ;) ) was Michael Clark Duncan's "King Pin". Great actor, & and a good version of the character. I think he'd have done well in a Spider-Man movie (they share the same Marvel universe afterall).

Girl Next Door, The (2004)
genre..............: Comedy / Romance
runtime............: 100 min
iMDB rating.: 6.9/10 (2,346 votes)
iMDB link...: http://imdb.com/title/tt0265208/

A straight-arrow high-school senior falls in love with the perfect 'girl-next-door', only to discover she is a former porn star. He comes to realize that if he wants this very special woman, he better be willing to risk it all and experience a journey for which he never could have prepared.

It has the pretty Elisa Cuthbert (from 24)
However as a film this thing sucks bigtime. It trys to emulate "Risky Business". The Hollywood notion of remaking & revisiting well known films once again fails :)

The humour isn't intelligent but there are various naked ladies about - teen naff sex comedy 3/10 - but dont forget Elisa Cuthbert!!

Staring the slick super spy Sydney from Sky 1's Alias - she was also in daredevil as Elektra - also a film of that name in the making now while alias is on a break to return 2005.

Quote:

Plot Outline: A 13 year old girl plays a game on her 13th birthday and wakes up the next day as a 30 year old woman
its big but for ladies - u cant touch big! and they fail its a girly girly film that makes little sence but has a happy ending all the same its "random" i wasnt paying much attention but i have no idea how she actually got to be 30 or back to 13 or what went on at the end in the wedding - girls will like it but only young girls -

not my cup of tea - some funny moments and good dancing but thats about it - not a bad film just nothing special, one for the kids.

5/10 just for Jennifer Garner being a good actress and dancing to thriller ..
for those really interested the SE is out in a few days :)

Just watched King Arthur, not a bad movie all in all. I was expecting a complete mess of a movie, just like First Knight, but was happly surprised. :)

Although there where some glaring inaccuracies (namely Arthur's father Uther Pendragon leading the 'Britons' at the Battle of Badden), still a good movie.

this is a good review:-

http://www.wafflemovies.com/dogville.html

"Dogville is a dog alright. Writer/director Lars von Trier decided to turn Dogville into an experimental film that went as badly as one of my high school chemistry labs. Instead of making a REAL movie, with sets, props, different locations and more, von Trier has staged the entire film on a naked theater stage with chalk outlines for the buildings, and a tape recorder voicing the barking dog. I hope he saved enough chalk to outline the carcass of his dead career, or maybe my body after I croak from outrage..."

Plot Outline: When a former member of the U.S. Army Special Forces returns to his small hometown in rural Washington State to revive his family's lumber mill business, he discovers that much has changed, as the normally tranquil town is now besieged by drugs, outbreaks of violence and a general feeling of malaise and terror
Cast:
The rock
Neal Mcdonough
Johnny "Jackass" Knoxville
Ashley Scott

Well - WWE's "The Rock" stars in his 3rd leading role in a film and once again im not disapointed - its not a great film its simple and a bit of mindless action - the fighting wasnt that great but i doubt that had anything to do with the rock him self more the director etc. Knoxville did fine as a co star (a lot better than he did in mib2) and was the comedy relief. Films bassed on a true story with a few hollywood tweaks, the love interest isnt explained well but she is fine so i wouldnt ask many questions either. it didnt go on for too long and had a happy ending so harmless really. but deserves a 6-7 outta 10.

If you do need to see a film with the rock in it pick welcome to the jungle (aka the rundown) it may be naff but its one of the most enjoyable films i have seen all year - especially the monkey scene :)

Agreed, did you notice how many times the bent up the Tomato though. After the bunker on the golf course you could see the chassis had been bent, the last jump over the hill in SFO caused the front wing panel to crumple on landing, another manouver caused the whole of the chrome running strip to bend.

a v p

disapointment all round really - i knew the plot for years and it was good it was just done in a way that made me mad.. cant give away to much so i will just moan some more :)

when they meet the predators they dont say cor blimey what the dickens was that - infact they dont say anything for ages - and when their buddies are screaming cos they are being done in by aliens they dont think ohh better go look...also the predators them selves are meant to be young and in training to be a proper predator yet they kinda look slow and overweight and not at all like the ninjas of the first 2 films, yeah they are young but they have had 100 years to prepare for rite of passage and they turn up looking like a couple of fat bums who cant be arsed :)

the plot is explained in a quick 30 second sfx show - and the ending was well pretty cool :) it went from aliens to jurasic park but they left it open in 2 parts at the end one with the water - one on the space ship, and for those thinking heh hows that happen, well cast ur mind back to alien 3 ...it happens.

the actors are unknown so its fine if they all die and no one asks questions - should have had arnie again then it would of rocked a v p v arnie :)

whats right with it? well from the start the director is clever and puts so many images of them into your mind - for example at the start u see something spinning in space and u think ohh queen alien cool - but its a trick as its something else :) also u see a lot of alien spine/tails and they are just common items pretty cunning -

it is a good plot and the sfx were niffty but it wasnt that good it could of been so much better i can only assume its all gonna happen in a sequal maybe then someone will let me know whats going on with wayland as he is the dude that played bishop and his creator in aliens/alien3

overall? 5/10 must try harder and not leave it open for such predictable endings -

also im sure these aliens turned into huge stonking alines way earlier than the other films

Redemption: The Stan Tookie Williams Story
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0388367/

Quote:

Based on the true story, Stan "Tookie" Williams was founder of the notorious Crips street gang. Awaiting execution on death row, Tookie is now determined to stop the violence he helped create. When he begins a crusade to steer children away from gangs by writing a series of powerful anti-gang books, he earns worldwide critical acclaim, as well as four Nobel Peace Prize nominations.
Not what I expected, but then I read the wrong summary on IMDB before watching it! :dunce:

Nevertheless, it made my uncle sit up straight in the chair the whole way through, which is rather rare, and my Aunt kept her eyes open the whole way through too, which is even more rare. A very interesting movie -- based on a true story, I might add, and also a film which prompted me to go and Google for Stan "Tookie" Williams afterwards.

You'd have to be in the right mood to watch this -- if you want action and explosions -- then this isn't the film for you. This is a strong drama, and as such is quite captivating. An evening well spent.

the problem with Alien Vs Predator is the budget was only $70million.

half the budget of a typical summer blockbuster (eg. X2)

SOSAGES 20-08-2004 08:46

Re: Rate the last movie you saw...

x2 wasnt all that either and had an even lamer ending that only fans of the series would have a clue what it means -
a v p was let down not by its budget but by a naff director and no big names - also i think it missed its premier date as it was still being put together in the edit studio... if $70 million gets u a few rubber aliens 3 predator suits and some space ships nocked up in 3dstudio then its a sad state of affairs :)

Dont forget there are different sizes of predators and they have different strengths & abilities based on thier Size. Don't know what the actual names for them are but the game AvP II refers to them as light, Medium, Heavy & Assualt. Judging by how cumbersome they seem in the film I'd say they are a mix between Heavy & Assualt predators.
Overall I quite enjoyed the film, most of it made sense and it was a good excuse for a bit of mindless violence in the Alien & Predator Universe. It may well have revived the franchise aswel and I think that a sequal to this movie aswel as Alien 5 & Predator 3 will also be given the green light based on the success this has had so far.
Now there is one problem I had with the film and also there is another point of yours I want to answer but I dont want to spoil the film so highlight to read....
Why did the Queen Alien attack the Predator at the end? if he was carrying her young she wouldnt have attacked unless he attacked her first, wich he hadnt, and even then she would have been reluctant (We have seen this behaviour in Alien 3.).
As for your thing about the Aliens Growing to quick, I think its suggested that the predators have done something to the queen, I think the sparks of electricity are meant to suggest that they have speeded up her egg laying cycle, its also pretty plausable that they speeded up the alien Growth and developement aswel to speed up the hunt.

Overall I'd give it about 8/10, it was good but was let down by its short running time a lack of dialogue (Well interesting dialogue anyway) and a few bad mistakes. The way how the aliens are portrayed in this is much better than ever before, they look & act like they are supposed to, like Animals rather than like a guy in a rubber suit.

I think part of the problem with these films is the studio dumbs them down to get a 12a rating - see terminator 3, van helsing etc for examples of how violence is being removed from films so they can have a larger audience.

I note that (for example) Taking Lives was at the flicks as a 12a but now comes out as a Directors Cut with extra Jolie breast shots for the DVD release and the marketing people even released photos to the papers this week to hype this up - claiming that Angie had 'allowed' the director to put these scenes back into the film when really this is about putting a 'lite' version out at the flicks and the real version on DVD.

Same thing happened with 'the girl next door'.

SOSAGES 20-08-2004 13:41

Re: Rate the last movie you saw...

they dumb them down to make more money i assume as u can get a bigger audience for a lower rating but its just silly - i grew up with the alien/predator films and i enjoyed the comics and the back story .... it seems lately i am often let down by action films.

*MAYBE SOME SPOILERS BUT I DID TRY NOT TO GIVE MUCH AWAY* :)

@zrbyte your obviously a sci fi fan (as ur b5 avatar shows) you say the predators are "between Heavy & Assualt predators" do u think they did well against the aliens? u saw the sfx cip showing 1000's of aliens v 3 predators they did ok ;) the first 2 in this film just sucked - about the end with the queen - I to agree with what u said why she did that is a mystery but at the time its not known for 100% if the predator has it by us but im sure the queen knew - wasnt it alien 4 where the alien wouldnt attack riply cos she was part alien ? and in alien 3 it didnt attack cos she had one inside her maybe they just cocked up i dunno :)

about the eggs - in aliens we see the queen laying eggs they seemed to be going pretty quick to me i thought the electric shock was just to revive here from her frozen state.

Quote:

Bloody-Disgusting has a report from a recent screening of Alien vs. Predator which included a Q&A with the film's writer and producer Paul W.S. Anderson. Here's an interesting bit...

About the studio's cutting of the film, which he had no control over, he said, and I quote, "All of the best scenes were cut." Anderson was obviously very annoyed at the way the film was released. However, this was not purely because of the PG-13 limitation, which incidentally, the studio enforced THREE WEEKS before the release date! It was always going to be R until then. Part of the reason for the cutting was that some of the effects were not ready by the time the release date came around. The effects team had very little time to do anything.

As far as the content that was cut, apparently we see all those who die, die on screen, but he also said that there is a sub-plot that we will have to wait for on DVD. Yes there will be an R-rated Director's cut DVD although they don't know the release date yet.

Yes you do, Those are both 18 movies :nono:
lol, not that I can say anything though, I first saw aliens when I was about 6 :)
Just watched both of those myself though I would rate them more like...

Alien 6/10 (Would have scored higher but I kept laughing at some of the special effects and I didnt like the bit they added into the special edition about the alien turning the crew into more eggs)
Aliens 10/10 Quite possibly my favorite film of all time, the effects are great, the story is great, there is lots of violence :) and it doesnt look too dated (Especially considderring its around 20 years old). In some ways I would like to see a remake of Aliens, though based on my previous comments I dont think it needs it and ofcourse we risk them screwing with an allready good idea just to cash in if they do a remake.

You can watch 18's if you have your parents permission and it's inside your home isn't it? Well, that's what I've heard :erm:

I liked (well found it amusing for 5 minutes) the ability to watch starship troopers in the ark ark language of the aliens as a language option on the first disk.

I agree - I saw this last night and thought it was brilliant - 10/10. The whole cast were good, but I was really impressed with Joaquin Pheonix and Bryce Dallas Howard :tu:

The trouble with Shyamalans films now is that everyone's expecting something to happen - as he's said in interviews, it would be great if they could put the film out without his name being attached, 'cos that would remove some of the hype, but that'll never happen

ermmm.... you know how it is when you watch a film, and you think 'Ive seen this before'... this is how it was with I,Robot - it seemed to have bits from about 6 other films, resulting in a very familar feeling film.

Not a great film, not terrible, but nothing new or original in there.

I haven't fully enjoyed any of his films and it was the same again with The Village for me. Agree about the cast - terrific performances, something Shyamalan always seems to get with the actors in his films but there's just something about his stories I find ultimately disappointing. Joaquin Phoenix was as excellent as ever.
