I wonder when the 500mb will be released to all tho!

Re: 1Gb Review

The "cheap" way to do it would have been an SFP+ port, which I'd have been completely happy with.

Given that 1Gbps is surely the opening speed of 3.1 - we'll see higher tiers eventually - this does seem like a significant oversight.

Yeah, does seem a bit stupid to launch your new service tier with a device that can't actually handle the headline speed and definitely wont be able to do anything with the future speeds.

For 1GB, with it being new and premium, they could have just gone the old standalone modem route for a year and come out with a hub when it's a more widespread service to allow time for 10gb Ethernet to get a bit cheaper.

You'd be surprised at quite how many customers actually hate having to use two devices. There's a reason everyone uses hubs.

99% of customers i visit use the hub as a hub

Isnt 950mb enough? Is it really a HUGE disappointment

Vodaphone are offering a symmetrical 900Mb to residential users in Coventry, presumably because of the same issue of having routers with ethernet ports capable of >1Gb. I guess that cost would be the main factor.

Cost I don't think is the issue, its more to do with the end user equipment. Most users only have devices that are capable of 1Gb network speed, so why provide more?

Multiple 1Gb-capable devices in a household are capable of using all that bandwidth, and more.

Probably not the correct thread but looks like 1Gb is coming to Manchester next.

Why do people currently need 1Gbps for home lines? Genuinely curious ..

It's less about "need" and more about "if I can have it take 1/3rd as long to download red dead redemption 2, why wouldn't I?"

As to cost of multigig ports, sfp+ ports are very cheap to add, and while most probably wouldn't ever use them, they give the option of whatever optics (or indeed rj45) option you need. The average customer would probably ignore such ports but for those that want them the option would then be there. Cheap DAC cables are a thing, and mmf optics are less than £10 each.

I can see why they wouldn't want to put a 2.5g/5g/10g rj45 port on, not only are they expensive for something most wouldn't use, but it then brings "why doesn't my ancient cat5e link work at 10g" support calls.

Well I suppose it depends on how often you download red dead redemption 2? If you are spending an extra £30 per month to save this time, you can buy a lot of new games for £360 every year.

Re: 1Gb Review

That was but one example the same applies to everything I do online, I'd rather it was faster.

Also, while the upload is terrible it's significantly better than what I have now.

"You don't need it" is an argument that applies equally well to just about anything in life barring the bare essentials.

Some games on Steam can be 60,70, 80+ GB and are only set to get bigger.
Updates can also be huge.

More home devices connected at once.

That was just a trial / technical test of a FTTP system. The gig1 system still uses copper.
