SNP Protest & Walkout of House of Commons during PMQs

Quote:

SNP MPs have stormed out of the House of Commons chamber during PMQs, after their Westminster leader Ian Blackford was kicked out by the Speaker.

John Bercow had ordered Mr Blackford to leave after he stood and repeatedly said: "Scotland will not be disrespected by this parliament."

The speaker shouted "very well" and waved his hand as three benches of SNP MPs rose in protest, with choruses of "bye" - although it was unclear from whom.

Joanna Cherry, the party's justice and home affairs spokesperson, appeared to wave on her way out.

"What a pity, because there are SNP MPs who had questions on the order paper," Mr Bercow said afterwards.

SNP leader and Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon tweeted minutes later that she was "right behind" her party's MPs.

She claimed Scotland and Holyrood were "being treated with contempt by Westminster - and it needs to be highlighted".

Mr Blackford spoke to the media from outside parliament afterwards, claiming it was "no stunt".

He was only given the option to have it at the end of PMQs, which he wouldn’t accept.

Ian Blackford refused to sit down when ordered to by John Bercow having asked for the Commons to sit in private.

This was in protest at a lack of debate on what he said was a "power grab" in the EU Withdrawal Bill.

It brought PMQs to a temporary halt as the Speaker consulted his officials on what to do next.

Mr Bercow said MPs could vote on the request for a private sitting at the end of PMQs - but when Mr Blackford refused to sit back down he was suspended for the rest of the day's sitting.

... leaving their script behind them, complete with brackets showing where to be disappointed or outraged.

Scripted, choreographed nonsense of the sort the Scottish Socialists used to be famous for before the electorate got sick of them and voted them all out of the Scottish Parliament.

The SNP will discover the hard way that this sort of behaviour disgusts ordinary voters as much as it delights their fan base ... and that there are far more ordinary voters than fans.

I'm pretty sure he was given the option to have it now or at the end at first.

What a spectacle. Attention seeking, all the way from the nationalists, as per usual.

May could play a blinder here: Offer yon wee Krankie another independence referendum, which they'll lose, but only if the Nats support her EU deal. Horns of a dilemma?

Nah make it even more interesting - tell her that the whole of the UK get a vote and Scotland can't be dragged out of the UK, against England and Wales wishes...

I hate the way that the two bit nationalists of Scotland run their mouths all day every day and all Westminster can do is look smug and say "well, we win all the votes".

Why can't the Tories fight fire with fire for once?

They are so weak over everything north of the border that they give in on stupid stuff like Devo max, let Sturgeon dictate on things like English votes (like on Fox hunting). It is absurd.

Make her beg.

None of the reports I have read support that - there was confusion about the appropriate process, which was resolved when the Speaker asked his officials.

The procedure used to be invoked by someone shouting “I spy strangers!”. It was reformed in 1998 but what it amounts to is a vote on whether to evict the press and public from the gallery. The vote would have been lost, at which point proceedings would’ve continued as normal. However, a whole lot of time would have been wasted and this is probably what Blackford was after. Childish, pointless, grandstanding nonsense. And, more to the point, exactly the kind of nonsense that the Nationalists are always complaining about in Westminster. Hypocrisy, plain and simple.

I can't stand the SNP and the petty little nationalists.

I voted no to separating from the UK and wish they would just drop all the nonsense about trying to get another vote and causing our nation to be so split.

I was watching it and from what I recall the speaker asked if he wanted the vote now or at the end.

Thanks for that - you’re right, it shows Bercow asking which one he wanted, then saying it had to be at the end of PMQs.
