UK carbon dioxide shortage could ‘cancel Christmas’, warns turkey supplier

The owner of the UK’s biggest poultry supplier has added his voice to UK food producers’ concerns over a shortage of carbon dioxide gas, saying the supply of turkeys for Christmas will be affected.

Ranjit Singh Boparan, the owner of Bernard Matthews and 2 Sisters Food Group, said the closure of two large fertiliser plants in Teesside and Cheshire – which produce CO2 as a byproduct – due to a sharp rise in gas prices has hit supply to the food industry, already affected by a shortage of workers.

CO2 is essential to the humane slaughter of livestock, extends the shelf life of products and is vital to cooling systems for refrigeration purposes, industry leaders have said.
Good news for livestock! Executions are being postponed.

Good news for the McCartneys too :)

We probably won't have any gas to cook anything by Xmas anyway. Isn't it wonderful being an independent nation ? ;)

Even the Grauniad isn’t trying to blame Brexit for this one. You really are a stuck record.

Sky News provides a list of reasons as to why energy prices are higher and Brexit was not amongst them.

I can only assume that Mr K was recalling Johnson's promise to cut VAT on energy prices if we left the EU.

EU'LL NEVER BELIEVE IT Boris promises cheaper household gas bills if Brits back Brexit

EXCLUSIVE: The Former Mayor of London claims leaving the EU will mean ministers can slash the price of our gas bills

BORIS Johnson and Michael Gove today promise to scrap VAT on household energy bills if Britain backs a Brexit.

In the first cash sweetener of the EU Referendum campaign, they argue that leaving the EU will allow ministers to bin the "unfair and damaging" Ł2 billion a year tax on gas and electricity prices.

I can’t see any promise to cut VAT on fuel in that article - simply an observation from leave campaigners that such a thing would be possible (which it is). The Sun appears then to have extrapolated a promise from that.

At the risk of going over very old ground yet again, a referendum campaign is not an election. There is no manifesto. The debate is concerned with what is possible under the different scenarios voters will chose from, not a list of promises.

Germany won't be any better off than we.

He is. And if Mr K thinks he can circumvent his permanent exclusion from the Brexit topic, by bringing it to here, he can think again. #WasNotBornYesterday.

I believe we would have been in a better situation if Coronavirus hadn't hit.

We're in a slightly worse situation than Germany as our inter-connector with France is damaged with only 50% capacity until Spring next year. I appreciate this is for electricity but it impacts on the energy market.

Agreed - the Sky News article reported that a number of North Sea gas platforms have been closed for planned maintenance which had previously been postponed due to Covid.

I'm not in the best of health at the moment but iirc isn't there some sort of integrated eu energy market meant to insulate against such price hikes, basically are they paying as much as us? Plus as per the first post those animals aren't getting a stay of execution, there is talk of them bring culled as there's no one in the abattoirs or meat processing plants to deal with them, might as well shut them permanently now rather than put of the inevitable

Stunning uses CO2, then they are killed.

Maybe they'll use to other stunning methods - they are all well tried. Seems a bit convoluted to use a variant of the German method.
