Email migration

https://community.virginmedia.com/t5...144980#M185701

I guess this is relevant to this section.

TL;DR
Moved out, got ISP now can't keep my email which I set up just because I'm not the owner of the VM account connected to my parent's address.

Re: Email migration

But as long as parents keep your account you can setup things like GMail to pull emails from other accounts so they are visible in one place. Set up return address to go to new email, eventually you will have fewer emails in old place.

If you can afford it, get your own domain. Then set up an email forwarder to your new account. You can then share that email and it remains same even if you change email provider.

I recommend to everyone NOT to use an ISP email, best to use something like Gmail or Outlook so you can avoid problems like this, it's a no brainer.

Re: Email migration

I have no idea, this is probably a dumb question but here goes:-

I'm the primary account holder, with 4 email addresses.
If I quit NTL (Virgin) and move to another ISP, can emails to the NTL (Virgin) addresses be redirected to new email addresses for a period of time or do the original email addresses become 'dead' as soon as the account is deactivated?

My guess is that anything sent to the old address would fly around without landing anywhere, with no redirect period at all.

It stays live for 90 days, then after that the account will be closed and all your messages and contacts will be deleted.

I assume then the sender would get a "not valid email address" returned to them after that, but not sure.

Well that's better than I thought Hugh, thanks. :tu:

Time to start looking for alternatives now, wife complaining at NTL prices (again), not sure she'll be happy with what I come up with though ;)

I have gmail for family and friends, hotmail/outlook for everything else

I vaguely recollect setting up a gmail account many years ago  no idea of the details, probably best to do another ;)

Think wife & daughter can sort their own . . daughter probably already has a dozen anyway :D

At least the change - when/if it happens - won't be as disruptive as I first thought. Wife may not like the TV options/prices though :erm:
