I'd love to try AOL's great-sounding unmetered product, but not at the expense of having their software on my PC.

Why will they not make it optional? There are many 'experienced' users who would happily try their product if it could be sold with an option to be 'product only' and not have the software.

Well that was one of my concerns, but a friend of mine who is with AOL, says you can just get rid of the software and put in your own settings, like with any other ISP. I've not seen it or tried it myself. Having to use the AOL software would really put me off, i've never been a fan of bundled software.

That's the budget version. They offer a normal broadband service with 30GB a month. Which is cheaper than NTL.

Yes but ADSL isn't as good as Cable I don't think :p:

I remember when they said broadband was "always on" internet connection, I think with all these bandwidth limits they don't say that any more. Well some ISP's do, such as BullDog and Satelite ISP's, that why I'm going with satelite when I get the money.

ntl do. It is 'always on' because it's never off!

Always on has no bearing on the amount you download. It's not like the old dialup restrictions some firms had, about how many hours a month you could be connected. I still laugh nostalgically when I think about that!

DieDieMyDarling 28-07-2004 19:28

Re: [Merged] BB Speed Upgrades

It's the same principle though. On 1.5mb you will be allowed under 2 hours of full useage per day. It's a bit like getting your shopping for cheaper if you get the same amount of items, but do it slower. And if you rush, you get charged extra. :td:

Yes but if the bandwidth gets capped, when you use it I think you get cut off until the next day or month. So that basically isn't "always on" internet ;)

Electrolyte01 28-07-2004 19:40

Re: [Merged] BB Speed Upgrades

No, it includes people with the SCAM as well. Basically any one who has broadband with NTL get the limit.

Re: [Merged] BB Speed Upgrades

I think it is all about what area you live in. And whether your area is heavily contended. If not many people have BB in your area you can do what you like. If it's a heavily used area they'll crack down on you pretty fast.

If that was the case, people would leave NTL. EVERY ONE has this "guide", if it was like that it wouldn't be fair :erm:

It is now optional for ADSL users. You can use your AOL Master screen name + password on your router = ADSL connection. And the connection itself seems like a typical ADSL line.

As far as i know they are the facts though. Ntl are only sending out letters to offenders in highly contended areas. Can someone back me up on this? I read it on here, but can't remember where.

Sorry, i thought it was 30GB. Still leaves AOL ahead of the rest. Along with the likes of Bulldog. It's just frustrating to see other people getting a much better deal with other providers.

one point although off topic.

Just because bt openworld has a low cap that isnt a representative of ADSL, there are still numerous isps uncapped and some who are capped but have a uncapped product still available.

on topic no upgrade here yet but then again leics isnt supposed to be until 1 august so I will expect it then even tho thats a sunday.

Oooh - My speed is measured as 181.00kbps in 150/300k STB in leeds...

anyone want to take a guess as to what that means?

Wayne3212 29-07-2004 10:22

Re: [Merged] BB Speed Upgrades

It's weird, my speeds are up to 180kbs on a 150k connection. I dunno if it's just that people (like me) on a STB get a higher speed than 150k anyway because NTL's interactive service needs a higher speed than 150k (I think it's 256k?)

Hmmmm

badnbusy 29-07-2004 10:32

Re: [Merged] BB Speed Upgrades

Yes. STB customers who are on 150k are actually on 256k. So you will get varied speed results. Incidentally, when the speed goes up to 300k, you will only be gaining 44k, so wont really notice it.

However, SACM customers who are on 150k will notice it...

Still no upgrade in Oldham :(

badnbusy 29-07-2004 10:35

Re: [Merged] BB Speed Upgrades

Btw, since i posted my speedtest site yesterday, hundreds of people have taken it, and NO-ONE has got higher than a 1mb connection.

Hmm..... maybe this means no one has been upgraded ;)

So.... People who've been upgraded...

Actually, 150k stb customers can get speed up to 256k, but browsing remains at around 150k. using a download accelerator will give you the 256k speeds (around 30kb/s), but not using i get 18kb/s.

so the 150k to 300k increase will make a lot of difference to stb users as, but the max download speed will only change slightly - as badnbusy said.
:)

Incorrect, if it was that they would call it 256k for STB, and 150k for SCAM. I think that would be too much hassle though.

You would have to pay extra if you used a STB for that speed, and the SCAM would be cheaper :p:

BBKing 29-07-2004 11:21

Re: [Merged] BB Speed Upgrades

The 150k limit on STB is enforced off the STB, in the routing system. Taking that out and upping the speed on the box will give true 300k instead of sort-of 256k.

No more upgrades have been done yet, if you're wondering.

Compensated for what exactly?

The service you are paying for is 150k/600k/1.5meg

ntl have announced that later this year these speeds will increase.

Now you want compensation because ntl have done some areas sooner than others, but not yours????

Soory, that's totally unrealistic.

Typical of the 'compensate me' culture now prevelant in this country.

Evidently you haven't been reading Digital Spy, where someone in Bedford reported being upgraded. There's more than just Manchester (just a part of Manchester actually) being tested.

And the point of testing is to make sure everything works - we need time to digest how things went on the night before doing any more. This strikes me as a professional way to do things, which surely should be applauded?

NTL (for the uk at least) haven't officially announced any upgrade dates if im right... so in that case you have no case for 'compensation'.

As somebody said, thats the american argument..

Hell's Child 29-07-2004 14:31

Re: [Merged] BB Speed Upgrades

Not sure if this has been posted as I haven't been here for a while, but.....

75% of ntl areas should see the upgrade BY 2nd August. :Sun:

The other 25% of areas will be done by 2nd Nov gradually as these areas require Cabinate upgrades. This is official info I have received this morning ( I work here) Some may get the increase before the 2nd but by the 2nd 75% of customers should have seen the results.

So in short... in 4 days time the majority of customers will have the increase. When the Increase happends, the SACM or STB will reboot and hey presto....

Thought i'd pass the info on for those who doubt it!

quadplay 29-07-2004 14:39

Re: [Merged] BB Speed Upgrades

The numbers given by Hell's Child are pretty much the same as I've got. To break that down a bit, 80% of SACM should be done within 4 weeks (August 31st), and 88% within 5 weeks (September 6th). Some STB customers may have to wait until October, but it depends on your area and STB type, AFAIK. There should be a Postcode Checker available from Monday to see which areas have been upgraded.

They could say that you already have the upgrade as they only say that you will get upto 300k / 750k / 1.5 Mb , not guarantee that you will get those speeds. Whatever speed you are getting at the moment fits the criteria that it is upto 300k / 750k / 1.5 Mb. :D :D :D

I've already put my claim in.

I want compensation cos I'm not getting the speed I'm paying for.

FACT!

I'm paying for a 600k connection. It is nowhere near this speed.

(it's 700-750k)

COMPO TIME!

Re: [Merged] BB Speed Upgrades

Im talking if area's get delayed several weeks, please dont confuse this with me mentioning 1 area been done now and others not.

several weeks of paying the same price as someone else in a different area for a different product especially if ntl choose to advertise the new product, will have to wait and see if area's will really get delayed several weeks, if all area's are done within the same month I think thats reasonable.

sorry missed this

"The other 25% of areas will be done by 2nd Nov gradually"

well for me 3 months of paying the same price would be wrong especially for something that was marked for late summer which would be instead early winter. There is 2 ways of looking at this yes its a free upgrade why moan or different areas subsiding others while they wait for upgrade.

Is it just me or does the option to find out when we'll be upgraded, in the link above, not work?

"I have got 1Mb Broadband †“ what is 1.5Mb going to be like?
All our 1Mb Broadband customers will be upgraded to 1.5Mb later this summer.

This means that you will be able to

· Download large files at lightening speed
· Email large attachments ..."

I can't quite get this statement.
How will increasing the speed from 1Mb to 1.5Mb have any effect in emailing large attachments?

That *was* correct as there was a deal going on for new customers in June - half price broadband. I think its run out now though.
