You may consider my wording 'poor', but I could apply the same descriptive to your comprehension - I said nothing of the sort, have another read. The fact that the upgrades were announced is not the issue, its the speculation and whingeing that has occurred pending the official announcement of launch date(s). Doubtless ntl, when they are satisfied everything is in place to roll-out, will make this public and advise the million + subscribers as to when they will actually receive it. |

glad ntl have now confirmed the date's, seems those customer support people 2 weeks ago were right when I reported 1st aug and the date's was known by ntl staff :D
|
Re: CF receive broadband speed upgrade Dates
yeah, im just glad i know when they start. But i wish ntl did come out and say We will start from 1st august, but ahh well, its gettin done and thats all i wanted. :)

Re: CF receive broadband speed upgrade Dates
Sorted - Just as NTL line up a new batch of "You broke the 1gb limit" letters...
Are the upload speeds changing also? |

The new speeds should hopefully be in effect very soon which is great news :D
... but has anyone heard any news about increasing the 1gig a day limits? Maybe one of the NTL staff might be able to give us an idea what people think of it on the inside? |

Dont mean to be pessimistic, but just been on the phone to a very knowledgeable chap at ntl support/faults who has insisted that there are still around 10,000 set top boxes that need replacing and in fact there is no date given at all!
He said that he's been given an initial date of around late October/November, regardless of SACM or STB. "Upgrades for SACM and STB will go ahead when the boxes have been replaced" I said "ntl said late summer! October/November aint summer" - to which he replied.... "Well it is ntl you know!" LOL. |

very confusing, as different areas have been given "apparent" dates for the upgrades which i reckon is just aload of lies

Re: CF receive broadband speed upgrade Dates
It will arrive when it arrives. All the speculation in the world won't change that.
Personally I'm too busy for any more of this rumour mongering(especially from erolz) so I'm unsubcribing from this now very pointless thread. :( Incog. |
Re: CF receive broadband speed upgrade Dates
Well, we'll find out on sunday. If it goes through, then yay!
If not, It'll have to be put down as "Coming soon". More to the point, it certainly stopped people grumbling about the price hike in the broadband... mission successful for NTL, Not quite sure I see the incentive for them to actually deliver anymore :) |

I know i would be on a 3mb faster then it could download a 500kb Jpeg |

Consider somewhere like Frank's new home Canada, 100GB a month is considered massively heavy use there (that 100GB is only 3.5GB/day) and this is a place where the standard speed connections are 3 - 5Mbit and the highest speeds all the way up to 10Mbit. Higher speeds do absolutely not equal a license to download loads more. In a way you're shooting yourself squarely in the arse here, you pay for maybe a 1/20th share, 15GB/month, can't complain when your provider baulks at letting you download 30 times that amount for twice the price. I have 2Mbit ADSL, my standard usage along with my partner on 2 PCs is less than 20GB a month. |
Re: CF receive broadband speed upgrade Dates
The thing is, The first quote you said looks like a legal site (Could be wrong) But anyway, legal Film downloads (and possibly rental downloads) are becoming viable, and when they become widely available, I fear that ntl users would be unable to use them, perhaps there should be a unlimited bandwidth option, you pay a small fee, and for say, 24 hours, you can download all you like, It would be perfect for LEGAL downloading of films, and games.
|
Re: CF receive broadband speed upgrade Dates
How big is an avarage legal film?
|
Re: CF receive broadband speed upgrade Dates
Quote:
http://www.usatoday.com/tech/columni...-17-baig_x.htm Downloading of games is legal too such as the case of Steam etc. No doubt bandwidth needs will burst through the ceiling at which point it'll be up to the ISPs to provide, however still gotta say that at the moment the price of connections is probably skewed up somewhat to cater for heavier users, and with these technologies in their infancy legal demand for large amounts of data each month is still pretty small. Even with these services you're gonna struggle to download much more than 100GB/month, going by the massive users I know of who download far more than they ever actually use. |
Re: CF receive broadband speed upgrade Dates
There are many legal films that fit on a CD. Flash movies are getting bigger and bigger, as are flash games.
Also, pornsites with movie clips, and indeed full movies. (not that i'd use them myself, ahem). Then there are music video's, taken off MTV, etc. Game demo's are quite big too. Some are over 300mb. And will no doubt get bigger. There are also video's provided by musicians/bands. Especially from the Punk scenes, where commercialism is selling out. So they offer all their stuff for free on their websites. It all mounts up, and with caps strictly enforced, we lose out. AOL are the answer. If ntl can't provide it, go to AOL. |
My connection has been upped from 600k to 750k
I'm in the Manchester area and my STB just restarted on its own so I looked at my download speeds and they are above 80 :D
The max I can seem to get is 86kb/695kbit :dozey: Is this normal? |
Re: My connection has been upped from 600k to 750k
cough - nice to know our efforts are appreciated
Well, allowing for overheads, 700k out of 750 isn't bad for starters. Lets see what the others get. I get <500k on my '512k' ADSL, for what it's worth. |

Incidentally, for the ones that have been upgraded - your IP addy hasnt changed has it?
|
Re: [Merged] BB Speed Upgrade Dates
No reason for it to, badnbusy.
|
Re: [Merged] BB Speed Upgrade Dates
Thought so. Just wondered if it needed a release/renew of IP's to pick it up.
Is it correct that the SACM should reboot itself when the speed has been changed, or should we manually keep rebooting it... |
Re: [Merged] BB Speed Upgrade Dates
will upgrades ever happen during the day or do ntl tend to do them in the early hours?
|
Re: [Merged] BB Speed Upgrade Dates
Early hours. We should reboot you, but if for some reason we miss you and you think your area's been done, or Christmas comes round (:P) feel free to. We'll be checking afterwards anyway.
No release/renew should be necessary. |

Re: [Merged] BB Speed Upgrade Dates
I am sitting at work, and have not been able to ping my machine at home all morning. It is set to mail me if the IP address changes, so the most likely explanation seemed to be that the server had crashed.
However, having read this thread, I am starting to suspect that I have been upgraded, and either the modem did not reboot correctly, or my router got upset. This is in Fleet on the Hampshire/Surrey border. Can anyone confirm if this area has been upgraded? |

Yep, got the letter this morning confirming the update in August. Looks like my area is getting it soon then, no one else I know with NTL broadband has had a letter about this yet.
:D :p: |
Re: [Merged] BB Speed Upgrade Dates
The good news: My machine at home is back on line. Looging at the modem logs, the cable network went down at 23:57 last night.
The bad news: Dosdiag still reports that I am on a 1 meg connection, so presumably the upgrade is not the reason for the outage. |

|
Re: Received letter confirming broad band upgrade
Not had any letter about that yet but did get a letter saying that call itemisation on the telephone bill will only be for calls over 50p unless I want to pay £1 a month for full itemisation. BT is looking even more tempting.

Re: [Merged] BB Speed Upgrades
Well what would you rather have? 1GB bandwidth per day or 1gb per month? (which BT offer, Wanadoo offer 2gb bandwidth, which is NO WHERE NEAR as good as NTL's 1gb per day)
I'm sticking with NTL until I can afford to move to BullDog. |

Re: [Merged] BB Speed Upgrades
Just tested mine, only 10k faster than it usually is (must have been from NTL upgrading the lines) but still the same speed at the moment. I'm gonna keep checking it each day, because I usually get disconnected of certains things, some times everything. When that happens, I'l test it ;)
|
Re: [Merged] BB Speed Upgrades
It's taking me about 10 attempts to get into (authorize, not download) one of my email accounts, i can hardly ever get newsgroups working, and i'm subject to the same cap (on my 1mb line) as someone on 150k (soon to be 300k). Not a lot to scream about there. Just means I'll exceed my limit in around 2 hours when i get the upgrade, compared to the 12 hours maximum use someone on the lower teir will get.
