Also, it may be worth giving your modem a reboot, even though the postcode checker says you won't be upgraded 'till September (it told me November, yet after a reboot, I'm now on 1.5mb).

Just done a re-boot and the RB speed test and:

Quote:

Mon, 9 Aug 2004 00:31:53 UTC
1st 128K took 1760 ms = 74473 Bytes/sec = approx 620 kbits/sec

4th 128K took 1860 ms = 70469 Bytes/sec = approx 586 kbits/sec
No upgrade yet.

If you were on the 150K service then yes (ish). The final column (where it says approx 284 kbits/sec on the first row) should indicate the speed your connection is running it. It should be about 300kbits/sec for the old 150K service.

The reason I was asking Stu is because on a good day I was getting those speeds through my STB any way before any upgrade :erm:

Re: [Merged] BB Speed Upgrades

STB speed change is 256k to 300k as the original cap was set (deliberately) too high. Hence you shouldn't notice all that much difference.

Just phoned NTL Tech Support as my service went from 600 to 750 then back to 600k last week, they checked my modem config files and said that they had put up the speed but taken it back down to local area problems. Interesting! Anyone else in Derby experienced this? I actually thought that Derby was connected as part of the Nottingham network? Can someone set me straight on that?

Cheers

Re: [Merged] BB Speed Upgrades

I'm in Hitchin as well (I think someone else in the thread said they were too) and I haven't received the upgrade.

I first did the postcode checker on the 1st August and they said it would "Your service is due to be upgraded during the month of August". I tried again on 2nd August and it now says "Congratulations your service has been upgraded. SG4 *** was upgraded in August."

Surely this means that I should have had the new config file? I've rebooted the modem every day since the 2nd and nothing has happened, even tried a few times at 1-1:30am and nothing, still on 600k. DocsDiag says "QoS max downstream bandwidth = 600000bps" and "Configuration filename: tntlhm120-silver.cm", all indicating that I'm still on 600kbps and on a temporary config file.

Anyone got any idea what I can do? I called ntl's broadband support line this morning and got told that there was nothing they could do to tell me whether I'd been done or not, because "our computers won't get that information until September." Great ntl, just great.

Just got back from a friends to sort out a prob on his pc and by the looks of it he is still on the 1.5meg so as you can guess he hasnt been down graded yet. Of course im 1 of the unlucky stb users waiting for there service to be upgraded to 1.5meg :(

where is the config file! i dont see it when i got to the modem page thingy! but do get the Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 1024000 bps Maximum Upstream Data Rate : 256000 bps stuff on the page which means no quicker for me at the moment.
I live near Hitchin mate (shefford) and seen no increase as yet!
Using the postcode tracker it says that my area is already upgraded!! Does this mean i have a duff modem or sumin?

You know I can't help feeling the poll that has been added to this thread is not helping in any way.It seems to have added to the sense of impatience that has increased since the 2nd of August. :(

Incog.

I think you will find Derby is Bromley (ex CWC) platform - you connect thru STB, right? Whereas Nottingham is Langley (original NTL ex Diamond) we connect on SACM and a different feed.

Re: [Merged] BB Speed Upgrades

Not being funny but NTL are working hard from what i hear and are having issues so they will be giving you a upgrade very soon, i was lucky and got mine but i have mates in other areas who don't and moaning wont get you it any quicker, sorry to be harsh.

As for NTL they was swift in when they replaced our STB ( i use a cable modem stand alone to connection ) to provide a new tv keyboard as our exisiting one did not work, I am impressed good work.

:beer: have one on me NTL

Aha, finally, someone close enough to compare, you on a SG1-20 postcode? most Have said they upgraded on the NTL site, but none of my friends in biggleswade (SG18 ...) Have had their speed upgrade, even though the postcode checker has said its been done, try NTL t/s maybe the postcode checker is wrong, or someone forgot to press the uprade switch. :p

Not to be picky but they said late summer which is August, given that September is the start of Autumn, but then again this is NTL!

Just wondering has all of Manchester, Rochdale, Bury and Oldham been upgraded? if so would that mean that the new modem files could be sent out for the 1.5meg stb service?

It's hard to tell from those results what speed you are on at all, they vary wildly - are you downloading or uploading stuff while doing the tests ?

Section 3: Download Speed Results
Three downloads are tested; one from one of your ISPs servers,
one through your Transparent Cache and one through an alterntive cache.
This will give you an idea of how capable your connection is.
Note: You should take the highest download speed into account.

ntl:World - 128k service Server Download:
31KB/s (248Kb/s) - Superb - much higher than expected

Download through Transparent Cache:
28KB/s (224Kb/s) - Superb - much higher than expected

Download through alternative Cache (webcache.bt.net):
0KB/s (0Kb/s) - **** SERVER ERROR: Unexpected error from Server****

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Section 4: Packet Loss
50 Ping Requests are sent to your server.
The packet loss is measured by how many of the packets don't
bounce back to the client. High packet loss may slow down your connection.
50 packets were sent, 46 bounced back; 8% loss (estimated)
Normal - to be expected
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Section 5: Transparent Cache Page Fetch Time
This test times how long your Transparent Cache takes to fetch a page
from the Internet. Please note that this test is subject to many different
parameters and sometimes may not be 100% accurate. This test can be
used to show delays when trying to view Internet sites. The timing takes
place from the moment the request for the file is sent to the moment the
proxy server responds.

Average time taken to retrieve a page: 0ms - At least one of the pages
requested failed to download. This may indicate problems with your
Webcache. Run the test again to confirm this.

[Incog - I've removed your IP from the results, & also done a bit of tidying to the text formatting (as it messed the page up) & removed a couple of unneccessary bits...actually, the ping & tracert bits aren't really needed either...]

Looks better than with the other test (well, for consistency...no wildly varying numbers...although it is only a couple of results) :)

But it's still not quite 300k.

The 3rd one only has an error because the test tried to use the BT webcache. The cache can be changed in the speed test settings to whatever you want (e.g. an ntl cache).

It still is august remember. Still got a couple of weeks to get the upgrade. My post code says will be done during month of august. I had my upgrade on the first day they started. Do not trust the checker.

Re: [Merged] BB Speed Upgrades

Fair point Darthyoda, but surely if the checker has changed to say you've been upgraded they've got reasoning to do so? They wouldnt just change it for the sake of it surely?

webvictim 12-08-2004 12:59

Re: [Merged] BB Speed Upgrades

This is what I've been trying to say since the beginning - OK, if the checker says you're due to be done then you'd have no cause to call. Surely if it says you've actually BEEN done and you haven't then you ought to tell them, purely because it'll alert them to the fact that people have "slipped through the net" as it were.

I'm going to call NTL tech support again and tell them, hopefully this time I won't get some disinterested Geordie bird who doesn't have a clue what she's on about...

Re: [Merged] BB Speed Upgrades

I spoke to an online advisor called Jason the other day who said much the same thing - although he knew the speed upgrades were being done, he didn't know what department was responsible for them and so didn't know who to talk to about problems with them.

Typical ntl, a communications company that can't communicate...

You should have explained (as I did) that some of the speed test results did show a speed increase--or do yours not show any increases?

I told them that I was upgraded last week and it has since dropped back down, they said there were tech difficulties in the area. Surely though the postcode checker should say it's not been done, its gotta be linked to database?

Worth rebooting your CM to see if you've been upgraded but not rebooted. Particularly if you're in a Bromley area and still aren't on the new speed, except for 1Mb STB customers. Everyone else on Bromley should be done, apparently.

The bigger benefit is te faster upload, good for gaming / uploading photos etc. 750k is pretty adequate for day to day surfing (unless there are lots of you using the connection.

Also, my friend just down the road from me who uses 150 has already been upgraded to 300, but me with my 1Mb is not yet running at 1.5Mb.

Whats going on there?

Richard Green ;)

If you are running Broadband through a Set top box, the old Pace boxes can't handle 1.5Mb, so NTL are replacing the Pace STBs with Samsung ones that can. Sadly, that means that us 1Mb STB users have to wait until every box has been replaced.

The postcode checker now informs me that 'congratulations my speed has been increased' but it hasn't - I'm still on 1mb, I've tried rebooting but no change.

Samsung STB.

According to BBKing (who is in a position to know) they are not upgrading the speed on the STBs until all the affected STBs have been replaced. I don't know wether this is nationally (ie all affected STBs in the UK) or on an area by area basis, so once all the 1Mb Pace STBs in an area have been replaced, all the 1 Mb STBs in that area get upgraded.

I would assume it's the latter. Although, this being NTL, I could be wrong... :D

OK thanks, the postcode checker is a bit misleading then, its probably going to generate a lot of uneccesary calls to support.

Thanks for the info.

Apologies if this has been raised before (don't want to check by wading through 70 odd pages of posts!) but does anyone wknow why us 600k customers are only getting a 25% increase in speed when everyone else is getting either a 50% increase (1MB customers) or even 100% (300k users) ?

I'm just being greedy but I would have thought I deserve upping to 900k at least !!!

Re: [Merged] BB Speed Upgrades

Two possible answers
1 - because thats what Telewest did
2 - thinking of Telewests intentions, the 750k lifts it a clear 50ish% above your DSL BB speed, so while you are only getting a 25% uplift you will be downloading 50% faster than the competition.

At 900k they may well need to look at upgrading the upstream speed to cope with the ACK packets and it would probably result in a lot more downgrades from the 1.5 M package.

:p:

Just wondering but 90% of the time i get 1534 for the test, if theres an offset it usually is 1556, but ive done multiple over the day and its all like that....might my area be undersubscribed to ntl...if there could be such a phrase? Sorry if this seems a bit pointless...just wondering.

I dont work for ntl but in my opnion its because before the upgrade the 600k package was easily the best value for money, after the price rise the 1mbit had to go up by a significant amount and the bottom package is probably going to have to compete with 256kbit adsl and low end 512kbit adsl packages so that also needed a fair upgrade but the 600kbit package is already competitive and at 900kbit a lot of 1mbit users would be too tempted to downgrade although I think ntl should have upped the upload on the 600kbit to 256kbit and on 1mbit to 384kbit.
