That'll put a sock in NTL's profits

Car Phone Warehouse BB

Is this a possibility or could it be a way of getting customers before they start and charge for it.

Carphone Warehouse to offer free BB if you sign up for their Talk Talk landline service.

Really low cost broadband sounds like a bad thing to me. The only way I can see people competing is by offering services with ridiculously low caps. Which, obviously, is bad.

We'll see how many terms, conditions, caps, how many varieties of traffic shaping, and how much contention there is on this service.

When things are freebies there as just a value add it can be rather tempting to let them run poorly, especially when they cost you.

The only way I can see this being free is if you are taking a landline service from them, and you are on an exchange which they have unbundled. On that arrangement the costs to them of providing a broadband DSL service are minimal. Any other way it has to be a fairly substantial loss leader and with margins in telecomms as they are right now it'll be 'tricky'.

I agree with you guys
Does anyone remember the old free (freephone) ISP called Redhotant?
They went under pretty quick, although it was nice having free interenet and no phone costs for that short period, heh

Re: [Merged] Car Phone Warehouse BB

the thing is, i think no matter how crappy the service may be or what their terms will be, people will signup, and a good few existing customers from various other isp's will probably switch within the blink of an eye!

redhotant lol.. i was with them til the end :)

Well, may be a coincidence but the Talk Talk website is relaunching tomorrow:

http://www.talktalk.co.uk/talktalk_holdingpage.html

So I imagine if there is going to be any big announcement, it'll be then.

why? a lot of people don't want to download much at all, just a connection that doesn't tie up their phone line. let the light users pay less, and the heavy users pay more, where's the problem?

If heavy users are catered for there is no problem.

Because without the lighter users paying more than they need to to subsidise the heavier ones the packages get prohibitively expensive. That's the problem.

ok, here's the deal

for £21 a month you get a phone line plus free calls and 'free' 8meg broadband with a healthy usage allowance:-

http://www.talktalk.co.uk/talktalk/s...STATIC.TESTHUB

Up to 8 Megabits per second download speed
Massive 40GB monthly download limit*
Free modem
Easy installation

Inclusive calls between all TalkTalk customers
Unlimited anytime local and national UK landline calls
Unlimited international calls to 28 countries
We guarantee that your bills will be cheaper than with BT

---------- Post added at 07:19 ---------- Previous post was at 07:17 ----------

so that £21 a month is made up of £11 for line rental (instead of BT line rental) plus £10 a month for the free calls and free broadband.

---------- Post added at 07:21 ---------- Previous post was at 07:19 ----------

remember this is ADSL so it's UPTO 8meg due to line length technical limitations.

---------- Post added at 07:23 ---------- Previous post was at 07:21 ----------

there's also a £29.99 connection fee.

Plus the 8Mb service is via LLU, so if your exchange hasn;t been unbundled you're not going to get 8Mb, it looks like it will be 2Mb for £10.00. :tu:

Looks good to me , will be keeping a close eye on it, the MD has been on the television this morning and he said it was free for life, 8 meg download 40 gig a month, what with NTL up to 10 meg and throttling etc, I have read all the horror stories when people are "upgraded" to 10 meg, so all I am saying is don't knock it till we know how it works in practice :)

where does it say the 8meg is subject to LLU?

How fast is it?
TalkTalk broadband is up to 8 Megabits per second download speed which makes it fast enough for online video. We will give you the fastest broadband connection that's available to you and your maximum speed will depend on your local BT exchange and how close to that exchange you live.
that clearly indicates that the speed is only subject to distance from exchange and whether your exchange can do it - no mention of LLU.

oh here it is - in the not so easy to find page:-

http://www.talktalk.co.uk/talktalk/s...OADBAND.LEGACY

"Our amazing offer depends on a new process called local loop unbundling, where we take control from BT by leasing their lines and even their exchanges. We can't do this everywhere, though we can for 70% of the UK, including 90% of existing TalkTalk customers."

this news article is very helpful:-

that's not a problem - that's supply and demand.

sure, there should be sensibly priced higher tiers too, but i don't see how you can argue that heavy users shouldn't have to pay their share.
