Network Congestion

4th day on the row, come mid afternoon my connection grinds to a halt and packets dropping.

Anyone else having issues, seeing reports of the same else where on other sites but no sign of a fix.

It's down to Virgin advertising an old peer for that route, should be sorted soon although not sure what sort of change processes virgin have in place, would assume a change like this would need a few authorisations

I honestly think since Virgin has made the 1Gig available in more and more areas they have not upgraded the capacity of their network enough to cope with demand.

It'll be something else, imo. I have the same TBB results and absolutely no 1Gig performance degradation.

I don't think so, you are I are literally as far away as we can be from one another and the lack of those types of upgrades wouldn't be affecting both of us plus all the peeps up north. I haven't tested my connection during these blip periods but I can honestly say it has been mint and I have always been able to get full speed since I have had it.

Re: Network Congestion

There are so many variables that only VM will be able to finger what’s going on at any one time. To the best of my knowledge, the principal variables are:

1. The available meshing nodes in the VM network;
2. The reroute algorithms deployed to ensure everything runs, one way or another;
3. The peering arrangements, including alternatives during congestion;
4. For TBB, their peering arrangements;
5. What people, or attacks are doing at any given time.

In the past events shown in this thread, and seen from my perspective, there has been one occasion when the evening mountain appeared in my TBB graph; in none of the other cases did it show up. Whether or not that rules out TBB’s Internet access arrangements, I can’t tell because I don’t know them.

The balance of probability lies, imo, with what’s going on in the VM network and their recovery mechanisms. Spinning plates.

What does TBB actually measure, is it pings ? If so, what is it pinging, your modem ?

Sephiroth 24-04-2022 20:25

Re: Network Congestion

The reason that I'm asking whether or not the mountain is causing poor performance is that the dropped packets, if affecting your node, would have a definite adverse effect. However if the problem is on a path that you don't use, then there'll be no effect.

It's pinging your router.

Well it's pinging whatever you have set to respond on the IP or Hostname you give it :)

But yes, is this actually affecting anyone's interweb browsing or vidya gaming? Someone would need to run Smokeping or something similar to get a long term view of latency to multiple sites.

ya, very few peeps are going to have publicly routable ips on their home networks so you aren't going to get a pc or anything else responding to it.

That would be them alright... they used to wait until the capacity has been upgraded to support the higher tiers in the area I remember years ago being stuck on 50 Mb long after 100 Mb started as the local network wasn't ready. Not now they just sell Gigabit broadband in areas with already congested headends.

Definitely something amiss the last couple of weeks - It's not just something local to me. PO7 and myself (PO9) for reference.

I do notice that general browsing is a bit 'off' in peak times - So don't think it's a TBB problem. Throughputs aren't affected.

I've missed todays peak, I'll do a few traceroutes and checks tomorrow - be interesting to see what's going on.

Is it affecting connection performance, yes it is 100% Last night webpages were lagging and taking ages to load, and no there is no other stuff happening on my network. This is only a peak time thing.

BBC pings are great too, and show plenty of jitter going on.

It looks like I have finally caught it mid-mountain and have been able to run a speed test

https://www.cableforum.uk/images/local/2022/04/21.png

https://www.cableforum.uk/images/local/2022/04/22.png

The speed test result isn't perfect but I am not worried at all. It kicked off at 600mb/sec and increased proportionally over time. If the test had continued to run another 3 seconds it would have reached my max of 940mbits. The only negative I would say about it is that my ping is higher than usual. They usually come back at 9-11ms so it is running at double atm. I made sure I didn't have anything else running on my network when I ran the test so as to not skew the result.

Well well well. The other day I managed to run a speed test during mid-peak and I said my connection remained unaffected as I was still able to get full speed. The only difference I noticed was increased latency and my ping doubled to 20.

It is a coincidence but I have been gaming for the last two hours (first person shooter). I was unaware of the bump but I definitely felt the lag and thought something was wrong. My entire game was very sluggish but luckily still borderline playable. Now I know why.

Yeah, i posted some before and after graphs somewhere on the forum when i first got it. I noticed it straight away. I think there is zero chance of them fixing it now, all their efforts will be on the hub 5 and presumably an in development hub 6.

Mid-hump again. I am glad I checked because I am about to embark on three hours of gameage and I know what to expect now.

Snap. Thought I would join in on the show and tell. This is me doing virtually nothing all day.

I dont understand why they havent fixed it. We are in the third or fourth week and it is a very consistent fault so they must know what is causing it.

Lovely... The 3am cut was seemingly a new firmware version (9.1.2109.200). Wonder what they're 'fixing' with that!
Been a mighty long time since I last saw any updates...

Routing and speed doesn't seem any different in the peak. Very curious!

Not just the odd graph, but total disconnection for a few minutes at odd times, for several days now.

No disconnections here but very similar to u around 8 - 10pm.

No disconnect for me either

I think the disconnect was the firmware upgrade, I had mine a few weeks back.

Ah, me too. It was on one of those nights with a bad bump so i just assumed the connection was so bad that it lost it and did a reboot.

The log shows an update was completed just after midnight yesterday.

Since then, we have no wifi in the home, and I can't see why. I have been unable to get though to a tech on 120.

Pressing the WPS button causes a green flashing icon, but now it flickers for a few seconds then goes out.

I did 3 reboots, and 3 resets.

I finally got to talk to a guy with the most unintelligible accent on 150 (120 was a typo). He did deep resets from his end a few times, then it all burst back into life.

This sort of thing happens every time the superhub is updated... :(

Back on topic, I asked him if they were getting reports about internet problems most evenings from 8 to 10. He has no record of any.

I am not being a dick dude but the best way to avoid these problems is to buy a proper router which doesn't have them. Software updates shouldn't involve mandatory phone calls to tech support for whatever tf a deep reset is.

I wouldn't expect him to, it is way above his pay grade and they struggle with the simplest of problems. When I had a problem with with my new shub4 before Christmas I rang tech support for a new one and luckily the person who I spoke to put me straight through to second line because she didn't understand a thing I was saying.

I hope you guys are raising it with VM and asking for some level of compo. To have your connection become a jittery mess would make gaming and anything else jitter intolerant (voip, zoom/teams calls, livestreaming) pretty awful during that period. The fact it's so consistent at peak times points to a broken bit of core kit somewhere, or just a complete lack of capacity and a failover link coming into use.

We’ve now determined the root cause of the issue and can confirm that it’s an issue exclusively impacting traffic passing through an interconnect from our network to the ThinkBroadband server site.

General traffic on our network is not impacted and as a result, the TB BQM is not reporting accurate latency data for Virgin Media customers right now.
Bullshit, my lag while gaming is terrible and it isn't psychosomatic. I can be playing quite happily for ages, start experiencing noticeable lag and then when I check my graph later I see the mountain.

Feels like it is the first Saturday in a month that we haven't had a bump. Maybe they have finally fixed it
