BT Phoneline-Virgin Fibre Cable ??

I have a NowTV box, when the engineer came out to fix it last week-I live in a complex of flats-he said the BT phoneline from my flat-plus all the other flats-ran to a junction box/cabinet about 20ft from the building and that shortish cable length THEN connected to Virgin broadband cable for those in the building using it.He said BT would not replace that old phoneline with a new one due to expense.I`m a bit of a Luddite so please excuse the ignorance but does that mean even if I had Virgin broadband fitted that the part of the cable that runs into the complex-the BT cable-would be joined onto it ?
Thanks....Mr Stuck-in the 1970`s.

The Openreach network is not connected to the Virgin Network.

The engineer was telling porkies.

Also worth noting. Openreach lines afor broadband are twisted pair. VM is coax for TV and Broadband.

... and to answer a question you didn't ask: You can migrate your existing BT phone number to the Virgin phone line if you chose to go with VM. This wil be entirely on VM network cables, as Pip says, nothing whatsoever to do with Virgin Media.

Perhaps your engineer is behind the times and was harking back to the long-gone days when VM used to sell an ADSL service on BT lines.

yeah, as Pip said they are chalk and cheese. If you have broadband from Virgin you'll have a coax cable running from the cabinet all the way into your flat. There might be some trunking going on along the way where connections from other flats join the line but it will be a coax cable all the way to the cabinet and then fibre takes over later on. If you are using a phone line for your internet connection you are not touching VM's network and are going over openreach.
