Oscar nominations 2021
This year's nominees have just been announced. I am looking forward to watching these movies because they are some very strong contenders. Even before I have seen the films I can tell you now that I would like to see pretty much every actor in the leading actors category win :)
Apologies for the lengthy list, normally I would try and tidy it up and put it all in a table but I had problems posting it last year so this year it is going to be the long text version. When you have watch the films come back and let us know your thoughts and who you would like to see win. Re: Oscar nominations 2021
Brilliant to see Husavik get a nod. It would be sweet indeed if, in the year there was no Eurovision, a make-believe Eurovision entry gets an Oscar.
But it's still no Ja Ja Ding Dong. :D |
Re: Oscar nominations 2021
These are the 15 films I am going to watch to cover the major award categories. In previous years half of them have been a pain to get hold of if they were still at the cinema or had only just finished but the good news is that thanks to coronavirus pretty much everything has been released and is already available on a streaming service. The Only one I cant find atm is The Father.

Re: Oscar nominations 2021
The Story of Fire Saga is lots of fun, but it's a very affectionate send-up of Eurovision rather than a smack-down. If you hate Eurovision you'll probably hate the film. If you're anywhere from indifferent to fanboy I'd say give it a go.

Re: Oscar nominations 2021
I agree - it was fun, rather than nasty.

Re: Oscar nominations 2021
So the good news is that there won't be a virtual Oscars. They are switching venue to one which has presumably more flexible seating arrangements for social distancing and there will be less people there than normal but hopefully the look and feel will be the same.

Re: Oscar nominations 2021
I know I am leaving it to the last minute but I am going to have a stab at who I think should win what. I don't think this year's films have been as strong as previous years. I would like to say it is because of covid and delays in production and releases but I have a funny feeling we would have ended up with the same selection as pretty much all the films are BLM or #MeToo and are capitalising on the current climate.
Here we go: ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE - CHADWICK BOSEMAN ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE - DANIEL KALUUYA ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE - VIOLA DAVIS ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE - GLENN CLOSE CINEMATOGRAPHY - NOMADLAND COSTUME DESIGN - MULAN DIRECTING - NOMADLAND FILM EDITING - THE FATHER MAKEUP AND HAIRSTYLING - MA RAINEY'S BLACK BOTTOM MUSIC (ORIGINAL SCORE) - SOUL BEST PICTURE - JUDAS AND THE BLACK MESSIAH RODUCTION DESIGN - TENET SOUND - GREYHOUND VISUAL EFFECTS - TENET WRITING (ADAPTED SCREENPLAY) - THE FATHER WRITING (ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY) - JUDAS AND THE BLACK MESSIAH |
Re: Oscar nominations 2021
Oh well, suffice to say that things did not go as I had hoped :)

Re: Oscar nominations 2021
It looks like they rearranged the ceremony to end the show on Boseman winning the Oscar but he then lost it to Hopkins! Awkward....
|
Re: Oscar nominations 2021
And he wasnt even there. I turned the tv off feeling very deflated and disappointed.
|
Re: Oscar nominations 2021
It seemed very awkward and bizarre. Quite the mess up n terms of production. We can't be sure - and they'll probably deny it - but they seemed ramped up to have an emotional ending and tribute to Boseman at the very end and then gracefully cut away but in the end they just had to say it's gone to Hopkins, he's not here, bye!

Re: Oscar nominations 2021
Yeah. I liked the little music game they played towards the end but the rest I wasn't too keen on. I know there are/were limitations due to covid and the venue and appreciate why they couldn't do live performances of the songs nominated for best original song in a motion picture but I did miss the traditional video segments and clips they do for the acting nominees and films nominated for best motion picture. It will be interesting to see what the wider audience thought but whilst the personal touch was nice for the more high profile celebs, I thought they spent far too much time going into the personal lives and details of people who we have never heard of and may never see again. I am looking forward to a more traditional ceremony next year with a host who can crack jokes and take the mickey out of everyone :)
