The Orville
New comedy series coming in the autumn;
|
Re: The Orville
l thought when l saw the title of the thread the first thing that came to my mind was the famous duck Orville.:D
|
Re: The Orville
I've watched the trailer three times now, just seems really funny to me.
Very much like Galaxy Quest, which I loved. |
Re: The Orville
Yes having gone from looking at the title it looks pretty good to me.
|
Re: The Orville
Just watched the first episode, and it really good, I loved it.
It is a bit of a spoof of Star Trek, it is a bit of a comedy as well, but it was also quite serious in places, and the first episode was a good story. Cant wait to see more of this. |
Re: The Orville
The online reviews I've seen so far have not been good. Hyped as a Sci-Fi comedy they are saying that there really isn't much to laugh about in it.
Then again I think a lot of critics just like to hate on Seth McFarlane where possible. I will watch it tonight maybe. |
Re: The Orville
I watched it myself. Although there are comedic moments I would not describe it as a comedy, there appears to be a deeper undercurrent.
According to Seth McFarlane it will be exploring all sides of the genre, comedy, light side dark side and all inbetween. IMHO it may well end up being a classic series. Bottom line, I enjoyed it (especially "Arbour Day") and I'll watch again and give it a chance. |
Re: The Orville
Haven't watched episode 2 yet but FYI episode 3 will be aired on Thursday in the US as will the rest of the series.
|
Re: The Orville
Anyone know who will be airing/streaming this in the UK? *Officially*, that is.
|
Re: The Orville
Fox I believe.
|

It is not even on their site as an up and coming series although the deal has allegedly already been agreed. |
Re: The Orville
Seth MacFarlane obviously wanted to be Captain James T Kirk when he was a kid and with him being goldenballs in the eye of Fox, they gave him free range to create this monstrosity.
It's like an parody of Star Trek, except it's not funny or anything else a parody should be. You can't even use the excuse of it's humour being subtle, it's just not there. I laughed once. Just. |
Re: The Orville
I really don't think it is meant to be a parody as much as a homage to Trek and other Sci-Fi shows.
I really enjoyed the second episode and it had a real TBG vibe about the main plot, but I do love the moments were it tries to input some humour as some of the things are said or talked about would actually go one, rather than the total seriousness of Trek. |

Re: The Orville
Yes indeed, I was going to post that myself having just seen it elsewhere.
Very please, its been a great show IMO, and I'm looking forward to more. |
Re: The Orville
The Orville arirs its Season 1 finale on Dec 7th.
For those counting, this is actually only the 12th episode, when originally the season was 13. The last episode has now been held over to be part of Season 2, next September. |
Re: The Orville
doesn't look like you re going to be getting season 2 this year:

Re: The Orville
Just got round to watching this and finish EP12 yesterday.
I was 50/50 with this when I saw the advertisment but decided to give it a go last week. It has to be one of the best trek rip offs yet. it's everything you want star trek to be. They always seemed a bit stiff in the trek universe, When in real life the orville is probably more like how it would be lol |

It's probably not surprising, as Charlie Brooker (writer of Black Mirror) and Seth MacFarlane (creator of The Orville) are both massive Star Trek fans, and The Orville is co-produced by Brannon Braga. A writer and producer who got his first experience on TNG, then went on to work on Voyager and Enterprise. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed Discovery, but I feel it has lost what I consider a core quality of a good Trek series. Hope. Someone once said he thought the strength of Star Trek (all series) was it said to people "things are bad now, but it will get better" (he actually used a word that would trip the swear filter). Discovery has lost that (at least so far). Both The Orville and USS Calister have retained that quality. |
Re: The Orville
I found out while watching an episode it stars the bloke who played Bill Buchanan in 24
|
Re: The Orville
I like him, he was a good guy. "This is Bill Buchanon, we are code red, i repeat code red, lock down the white house" or some to that effect.
|
Re: The Orville
Just caught up with this series. Loving it.
|
Re: The Orville
Yep, I loved it as well.
Season 2 starts at the end of the year (Dec 30th) with a two hour premiere. |
Re: The Orville
Season 2 trailer.
|
Re: The Orville
Looks good :D
|
Re: The Orville
The premiere has been (re)confirmed as Dec 30th (it may be one hour or two, thats become unclear).
After that it starts up on Jan 3rd in its regular timeslot, for the rest of season 2. |
Re: The Orville
Seasons 2 is now off with a bang...holo deck porn with a virus lol
|
Re: The Orville
Episode 3 was very good.
Focused on Alara and also guest stars 2 Trek actors. The Doctor from Enterprise and Alara's father who played the Medical hologram Doctor from Voyager. |
Re: The Orville
Still loving this series
|
Re: The Orville
Who is watching this still? I'm liking the new serious side to the show
|
Re: The Orville
Me, they have gone in to an excellent Trek style show now and dropped a lot of the typical Seth McFarlane style of humour.
|
Re: The Orville
I always knew that Adrienne Palicki, Scott Grimes and Penny Johnson-Jerald were good actors, but I'm really impressed by Seth McFarlane. Particularly in season 2, I've found myself really believing in his character.
I particularly like the episodes Identity parts 1 and 2. They turned Isaac, a character who has always seemed to be there to provide something for the other characters to take the mickey out of, into a serious threat. The next part of this involves discussion of the plot, hence spoiler tags. Spoiler:
|
Re: The Orville
I hope they still keep some of the Humour for me it's what made the show. I like star trek but I like the funny side as well
|
Re: The Orville
I'm likin the blend. Can't get enough
|
Re: The Orville
***** POSSIBLE SPOILERS *******
Anyone else think they blew the whole budget on the Kaylon attack episodes? Now all we seem to get are on-board dramas. Women falling in love with robots, men falling in love with holographic projections....although I did enjoy the cigarette story-line. |

Re: The Orville
Just caught up on a bunch of episodes while on my holiday flights, loving Season 2.
|
Re: The Orville
Now season 2 has ended I found the last one a bit disappointing. Yeah it wrapped up the timeline but I was kind of hoping for something a bit more. As much as I hope for a season 3 and I do love the show even better than startrek to some degree.
But I don't think I would miss the show if they didn't do a season 3 and the last episode of season 2 kind of wrapped the show up "for me anyway" it at least appeared to have closure in the event season 3 never came about? |
Re: The Orville
Season 2 ratings have been very consistent and solid so you can guarantee there will be a third season.

I knew I had seen it somewhere before xmas. I was trying to tell a friend a couple of weeks ago that it had been renewed for a third season and when he asked me for proof I couldn't flipping find it.

Re: The Orville
because its old news and season 3 isn't confirmed yet.
i hoped it was new news when i saw the link. |
Re: The Orville
Yeah it looks dodgy. I think i found that link originally just before xmas and when i was talking to a friend about it a couple of weeks ago i still couldnt find any updated info. If it had been renewed in December five months later word would have spread and everyone would know about it.
|
Re: The Orville
I reckon it's safe. What's not to like about it.
|
Re: The Orville
yeah the ratings are very consistent and a lot higher than other scifi series

Re: The Orville
wouldn't surprise me if it is true but you have got to take it with a pinch of salt because I do not believe the report ratings of 5.6m viewers per week is accurate. Everything I have seen has it around the 3m mark for season 1 and 2.

Re: The Orville
I hate it when companies spin information like that to their own advantage, hopefully the advertisers are more intelligent and do their own fact finding. The season premiere figures are a one-off and are not indicative of the entire season by any means.
|
Re: The Orville
It's now Official. The Orville Renewed for season 3.

Re: The Orville
If they ever kill this show I can see an effort to save it like The Expanse. I think it's great.
|
Re: The Orville
It seems to have a steady and loyal audience so I think the ratings are going to be consistent going forward. The problem is that Fox is the worst network for cancelling good series and/or scifi series so nothing is guaranteed. Hopefully Seth McFarlane has had a sit down with them and told them he has got a 5 or 7 year plan like with the other Star Trek series. The fact that it has been renewed for a third season gets him half way their.

Re: The Orville
Hey Pip ... I’m just binging my way through Arrow and got to the point of season 5 where Ms Doig shows up. I’ve never seen her in anything before, so far as I can remember. She’s doing such a cut-glass upper class English accent as Talia Al Ghul I had to look her up just to be sure she wasn’t actually English :D
---------- Post added at 14:14 ---------- Previous post was at 14:13 ---------- (sorry, that was way off topic, I just saw the avatar and got unreasonably excited) |

She didn't do too bad with the accent. :) |
Re: The Orville
Seth MacFarlane’s homage to Star Trek, The Orville, will make the jump from traditional television to Hulu next year. MacFarlane made the announcement last night at San Diego Comic-Con, and said that the show’s third season wouldn’t arrive until 2020

Enjoyed Andromeda apart from series 5, total pants.
|
Re: The Orville
She's awesome, she's appeared in a lot of Canadian scifi. Andromeda s5 was terrible. Was an awesome show before then.
I still need to watch s2 of this... |
Re: The Orville
Not really breaking news but some peace of mind that it hasn't been forgotten about and they are still working on it.

Re: The Orville
For those who haven’t seen any of this (like me), the complete seasons 1 and 2 dropped on Disney+ this week.
|
Re: The Orville
Its really good, still waiting on a date for Season 3. :D
|
Re: The Orville
I hope being on Disney+ gives it a new lease on life, gives it a massive boost in ratings and guarantees it future seasons.

Well that sucks.
|
Re: The Orville
Yeah, they have shot themselves in the foot there. You would have thought any new network would commit to two or three seasons. Otherwise what is the point of picking it up? The problem they have got now is that if season 3 is a great success they cant renew the series for a fourth season, or if they do, it will cost them a fortune and involve lengthy contract negotiations.
|
Re: The Orville
Shame, but it must be very expensive for them to make.

So time waste watching another US program that Di$ney have put on their premium platform. I guess they either don't care about viewing figures, I won't nor can I justify paying for a premium channel. I guess they want people to find nefarious means to watch it without the cost, that people cannot pay during the current climate |
Re: The Orville
Many people have D+ at the moment so it will certainly get a lot of views. Also with Obi Wan releasing soon there of plenty good things to watch. I prefer it to Netflix.

With the cost PM, it's actually cheaper for me to buy the Blu-ray when I comes out . |
Re: The Orville
You can buy it annually at a slightly cheaper price.
Disney in future will stop producing physical media. This was reported a while back. There is so much to watch. I've recently rewatched Buffy, X Files and Angel as all episode are there now. Lots of Nat Geo content too. It's not just star wars and Marvel. |

Re: The Orville
The new issue of SFX has got a good 8 page feature on the new season if anyone is interested:
It is a cracking magazine and covers all things scifi past, present and future. If you are interest they do some cracking offers. The current subscription offer is less than £4 per issue and I think I am paying the equivalent of £5 atm so it is a good offer. |

Re: The Orville
TBH, I'm not sure how much I would really miss it.
Season 3 has been somewhat disappointing recently. The first 3 episodes were good, but since then its gone off the boil, and into boring woke mode for several episodes. I've ended up skip watching multiple episodes since Episode 3. Episode 6 [the time travel episode] was the main exception, that was pretty good. |
