I've watched the trailer three times now, just seems really funny to me.

Very much like Galaxy Quest, which I loved.

Yes having gone from looking at the title it looks pretty good to me.

Paul 12-09-2017 02:39

Re: The Orville

Just watched the first episode, and it really good, I loved it.

It is a bit of a spoof of Star Trek, it is a bit of a comedy as well, but it was also quite serious in places, and the first episode was a good story.

Cant wait to see more of this.

Stephen 12-09-2017 13:54

Re: The Orville

The online reviews I've seen so far have not been good. Hyped as a Sci-Fi comedy they are saying that there really isn't much to laugh about in it.

Then again I think a lot of critics just like to hate on Seth McFarlane where possible.

I will watch it tonight maybe.

pip08456 12-09-2017 14:12

Re: The Orville

I watched it myself. Although there are comedic moments I would not describe it as a comedy, there appears to be a deeper undercurrent.

According to Seth McFarlane it will be exploring all sides of the genre, comedy, light side dark side and all inbetween.

IMHO it may well end up being a classic series.

Bottom line, I enjoyed it (especially "Arbour Day") and I'll watch again and give it a chance.

Haven't watched episode 2 yet but FYI episode 3 will be aired on Thursday in the US as will the rest of the series.

Fox UK will be airing it but AFAIK there is no date set as yet (at least of 5 days ago).

It is not even on their site as an up and coming series although the deal has allegedly already been agreed.

Qtx 18-09-2017 22:44

Re: The Orville

Seth MacFarlane obviously wanted to be Captain James T Kirk when he was a kid and with him being goldenballs in the eye of Fox, they gave him free range to create this monstrosity.

It's like an parody of Star Trek, except it's not funny or anything else a parody should be.

You can't even use the excuse of it's humour being subtle, it's just not there. I laughed once. Just.

Stephen 19-09-2017 08:00

Re: The Orville

I really don't think it is meant to be a parody as much as a homage to Trek and other Sci-Fi shows.

I really enjoyed the second episode and it had a real TBG vibe about the main plot, but I do love the moments were it tries to input some humour as some of the things are said or talked about would actually go one, rather than the total seriousness of Trek.

Yes indeed, I was going to post that myself having just seen it elsewhere.

Very please, its been a great show IMO, and I'm looking forward to more.

The Orville arirs its Season 1 finale on Dec 7th.

For those counting, this is actually only the 12th episode, when originally the season was 13.

The last episode has now been held over to be part of Season 2, next September.

Just got round to watching this and finish EP12 yesterday.

I was 50/50 with this when I saw the advertisment but decided to give it a go last week. It has to be one of the best trek rip offs yet. it's everything you want star trek to be. They always seemed a bit stiff in the trek universe, When in real life the orville is probably more like how it would be lol

I've seen two Star Trek rip offs this year. The ironic thing is that although I enjoyed Star Trek Discovery, and feel it has potential, "The Orville" and "USS Calister" (Episode 1 of Black Mirror season 4), I think both of those shows actually feel more like the Star Trek I remember.

It's probably not surprising, as Charlie Brooker (writer of Black Mirror) and Seth MacFarlane (creator of The Orville) are both massive Star Trek fans, and The Orville is co-produced by Brannon Braga. A writer and producer who got his first experience on TNG, then went on to work on Voyager and Enterprise.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed Discovery, but I feel it has lost what I consider a core quality of a good Trek series. Hope. Someone once said he thought the strength of Star Trek (all series) was it said to people "things are bad now, but it will get better" (he actually used a word that would trip the swear filter). Discovery has lost that (at least so far). Both The Orville and USS Calister have retained that quality.

Focused on Alara and also guest stars 2 Trek actors. The Doctor from Enterprise and Alara's father who played the Medical hologram Doctor from Voyager.

Re: The Orville

Who is watching this still? I'm liking the new serious side to the show

Stephen 05-03-2019 09:02

Re: The Orville

Me, they have gone in to an excellent Trek style show now and dropped a lot of the typical Seth McFarlane style of humour.

Stuart 05-03-2019 10:15

Re: The Orville

I always knew that Adrienne Palicki, Scott Grimes and Penny Johnson-Jerald were good actors, but I'm really impressed by Seth McFarlane. Particularly in season 2, I've found myself really believing in his character.

I particularly like the episodes Identity parts 1 and 2. They turned Isaac, a character who has always seemed to be there to provide something for the other characters to take the mickey out of, into a serious threat.

The next part of this involves discussion of the plot, hence spoiler tags.
Spoiler:

I like the way that episode 1 appears to be a throwaway episode for a little light relief, then, at the end, the Kalon are revealed as cold-blooded killers who killed every biological being on their planet, and are looking to do the same to other planets, and I like the way the episode flips from being a light, fluffy episode into something very serious. I also like the way that the 2nd part doesn't go too far down the big reset route (which Doctor Who has tended to do, with the universe being put into danger and the Doctor doing one thing that saves it). The Orville does, to some extent, but even once the crew is saved, they still have to defeat the Kalons

Gavin78 05-03-2019 16:48

Re: The Orville

I hope they still keep some of the Humour for me it's what made the show. I like star trek but I like the funny side as well

Anyone else think they blew the whole budget on the Kaylon attack episodes? Now all we seem to get are on-board dramas. Women falling in love with robots, men falling in love with holographic projections....although I did enjoy the cigarette story-line.

It's possible to combine humour, action and even horror. Whether you like them or not, all of Joss Whedon's shows have done that.

Re: The Orville

Now season 2 has ended I found the last one a bit disappointing. Yeah it wrapped up the timeline but I was kind of hoping for something a bit more. As much as I hope for a season 3 and I do love the show even better than startrek to some degree.

But I don't think I would miss the show if they didn't do a season 3 and the last episode of season 2 kind of wrapped the show up "for me anyway" it at least appeared to have closure in the event season 3 never came about?

General Maximus 28-04-2019 11:27

Season 2 ratings have been very consistent and solid so you can guarantee there will be a third season.

5.6m was the season 2 premier figures.

“Orville” opened to a 1.5 rating/5 share in adults 18-49 and 5.6 million viewers in the Sunday 8 p.m. time slot, according to Nielsen’s live-same-day ratings. Those numbers will grow once delayed viewing is factored in. In September 2017 “Orville” also launched on a Sunday with a football lead-in to 8.6 million viewers and 2.8 rating in adults 18-49

It seems to have a steady and loyal audience so I think the ratings are going to be consistent going forward. The problem is that Fox is the worst network for cancelling good series and/or scifi series so nothing is guaranteed. Hopefully Seth McFarlane has had a sit down with them and told them he has got a 5 or 7 year plan like with the other Star Trek series. The fact that it has been renewed for a third season gets him half way their.

The Orville is returning for its third season after a long absence but, season three is likely the end of the Hulu series. Series creator/star Seth MacFarlane and the other members of the cast were released from their contracts in August and have moved on to other projects. If a fourth season were to be made, it would likely be difficult to reassemble the entire cast.

Yeah, they have shot themselves in the foot there. You would have thought any new network would commit to two or three seasons. Otherwise what is the point of picking it up? The problem they have got now is that if season 3 is a great success they cant renew the series for a fourth season, or if they do, it will cost them a fortune and involve lengthy contract negotiations.

So time waste watching another US program that Di$ney have put on their premium platform.

I guess they either don't care about viewing figures, I won't nor can I justify paying for a premium channel.

I guess they want people to find nefarious means to watch it without the cost, that people cannot pay during the current climate

You can buy it annually at a slightly cheaper price.

Disney in future will stop producing physical media. This was reported a while back.

I actually look at this as a positive. Having it on Disney+ will open it up to a wider audience and if there is a spike in ratings you might find Disney want to renew it and keep it going as their own version of Star Trek so they have got an offering comparable to Amazon and Netflix.

It is a cracking magazine and covers all things scifi past, present and future. If you are interest they do some cracking offers. The current subscription offer is less than £4 per issue and I think I am paying the equivalent of £5 atm so it is a good offer.

Here's 2 interviews with Seth MacFarlaine, one written, one video. The video one is not all about The Orville but includes a clip from the season as well as the trailer. I found it entertaining YMMV.

Written

Video.

THR: I know the process of getting to a fourth season is complicated, as the actors’ contracts are up after this season. But given that there continue to be various topics to tackle with a show like this, including the recent Roe v. Wade decision, do you find yourself hoping for another season?

MacFarlane: I would love it. I know the entire cast is hoping for it. It’s a big question mark for a lot of reasons. It’s not an inexpensive show to produce. It requires an ambitious budget. But the flip side of that is, it’s no more ambitious than half the other streaming shows on television. It really is going to depend on audience response, on whether the show gets discovered. I still think there are a lot of people who just don’t know that we’re out there and don’t really quite know what we are. And when people sit down and watch the show, they’re almost always surprised, and it almost always upends their expectations. Probably because it’s me (laughs), probably because most of what I’ve done in the past has been very different, but it’s dependent on audience response. At the end of the day, it’s a business. It’s dependent on whether we’re worth something to Disney and to the platform that we’re on.
Here's a sneak peek at episode 7.

TBH, I'm not sure how much I would really miss it.

Season 3 has been somewhat disappointing recently.

The first 3 episodes were good, but since then its gone off the boil, and into boring woke mode for several episodes.

I've ended up skip watching multiple episodes since Episode 3.
Episode 6 [the time travel episode] was the main exception, that was pretty good.
