Useful Info: Adding an ntlworld e-mail account to Outlook Express

Many ntl internet customers access their emails via the webmail service available on the ntlworld.com website here. Whilst webmail is convenient especially when you haven't access to your main PC, another way of accessing your emails is through Outlook Express. Here we show you how to set up Outlook Express on your main PC.
  • First of all you need to open Outlook Express on your PC. There are two ways in which you can do this. The simplest way is to find the Outlook Express icon on your desktop, and click it. Alternatively, you may click on the Start button located on your taskbar, then Programs and finally you will need to locate Outlook Express and click on that. If a dialog box appears asking for your name, click cancel.
  • When Outlook Express has opened, locate and click on the Tools menu.
  • A dropdown menu will appear. Click on Accounts.
  • Now click on Add and then Mail.
  • You will see a Display Name box. The name that you type in here will be visible to recipients of your emails. You may like to type your real name in this box, or you may wish to type another name.
  • You now just need to click the Next button.
  • You will now see an E-Mail Address box. Type the email address in here of the account that you wish to retrieve mail from. This must, obviously, be an email address that belongs to you.
  • Click Next again.
  • ow you need to enter the server names for your incoming and outgoing mail. For ntlworld email accounts, these are pop.ntlworld.com and smtp.ntlworld.com. Enter these in the two boxes marked pop and smtp.
  • Again, just click Next.
  • You now need to place some information in the Account Name and Password boxes. Your account name is the name in front of the @ntlworld.com part of your email address. Enter your password.
  • Please ensure that the Remember Password box is ticked and then click Next.
  • You have now entered all of the information needed to set up an email account through Outlook Express.
  • Click Finish, and then close the Internet Accounts window.
You are now able to send and receive emails through Outlook Express. If you have any questions or queries, please feel free to ask them on our discussion forum area, where members of this site will be only to pleased to offer you help, advice and support.

If both of those are not there, because they may have been deleted or moved, then go to Start, choose run and in the box that appears type

<drive letter>:\program files\outlook express\msimn.exe

For example, mine would be : -

e:\program files\outlook express\msimn.exe

Yours, depending on your system configuration would be : -

c:\program files\outlook express\msimn.exe

Then hit enter and OE should open. You may want to go into <drive letter>:\program files\outlook express to create a shortcut to msimn.exe so it will be easier to launch next time.

If you have Microsoft Office 2000/XP and wish to use Outlook as your mail client, then the instructions are pretty much the same as for Outlook Express.

Outlook Express Error Codes

I thought I would post here the most common error codes in Outlook Express and how to resolve them.

POP3 errors:
0x800CCC91- invalid username - check the username you have typed. ntl usernames are form username@ntlworld.com, and always in lower case. So if your email address is monkeybreath@ntlworld.com, your username would be monkeybreath

0x800CCC92 invalid password - check the password that you are using is correct. Passwords must be at least 6 characters, and contain at least one number. All letters will be in lower case. Passwords setup by default are in the form letter then 9 numbers, eg w055478544 .

0x800CCC03 Already Connected - you are either logged onto the account from another computer, or the previous disconnect was improper and the account has been "poplocked". You can either wait for the "poplock" to time out, or have someone shell into the mailserver and kill the mail task running on your account. This normally only happens with accounts that have UNIX shells

0x800CCC0A message download incomplete - This is one of two things:
1. corruption of the pop3uidl file. Disconnect from the internet and close all programs. Search for the file pop3uidl and delete it. Reboot, reconnect to the internet and try again.
2. You may have a corrupt or a very large file attachment on the mailserver. Large file attachments, mail that are missing headers, or mail that do not conform to the mail RFC's can cause this. To check this either check webmail (http://webmail.ntlworld.com) or telnet the mail server (telnet pop.ntlworld.com 110)

For more information see here and here if you are using a Norton anti-virus/ firewall software.

0x800CCC10- Invalid recipient - check the recipients email address is correct.

IMAP errors:
0x800CCCD1- Login failed- check your username and password

0x800CCCD5- not IMAP server - check that the server you have specified is imap.ntlworld.com

0x800CCCDD- unexpected disconnection - try reconnecting again

SMTP errors:
0x800CCC78 SMTP server rejected sender - you are trying to send with an address that is rejected by the SMTP server; check that you have entered the details correctly and you are trying to send using the correct SMTP server. This is often caused by having the incorrect address in the reply-to address.

0x800CCC61- Unknown error code - in other words, something is wrong but the SMTP server cannot work out why. Usually a server problem.

0x800CCC6C and 0x800CCC6D - No space to store messages / Storage limit exceeded - These are caused by server errors, self explanatory really.

General error codes:0x800CCC15 Windows socket error - on windows 95/98 follow the instructions here to fix this or for windows 2k/XP follow instructions here

0x800CCC0D / 0x800CCC0E / - cannot find server / cannot connect to server - check the server names are correct:
incoming: pop.ntlworld.com or 62.253.162.50 or if you have setup an IMAP account: imap.ntlworld.com or 62.253.162.70
outgoing: smtp.ntlworld.com or 62.23.162.40
The server may not be responding because it is offline - try pinging the server address and check you get replies. If so, check that a firewall is not blocking your internet connection. The executable for Outlook Express is Msimn.exe.

0x800CCC19- Timeout- Self explanatory! Either the server is having problems. Or a firewall is blocking the connection.

Hope this is useful to some... maybe it can be stickied or moved the the knowledgebase as appropriate?
