I don't think that they're specifically for anything; more of a fashion thing. Personally, I've got one of the 'Make Poverty History' bands, but that's the rubber type :shrug:

If they are red, aren't they to do with Kabbalah (like Madonna has).

They're often coloured. Some look like leather.
